  • "pop"? Contrast you mean

  • your comparing visual quality of eink by streaming a video that is being viewed on lcd, therefore viewers dont get a damn hint of a sense of comparison. Just saying....

  • Your reviews are great, they're really original. You can even make them better by talking less and showing more about the products. Shorter reviews would be welcome too. Good luck!

  • The portrait form of the Adam is way too tall.

  • can you see the reflection in real life? or is that just through the camera?

  • Worst review ever. Your voice is so fucking annoying. Try writing a script next time, even doing a rehearsal. This was painful... Review full of rather ignorant statements as well.

  • adam costs arround 15000 rupees....its cheap....

  • How much does the notion ink Adam cost??

    say me pls fast

  • hello i have a question, how is reading on adam in e ink mod , the eyes doesn't tired, becouse on i pad ather 30 min my eyes tired, plese respond me, my email is cantorca@rambler.ru

  • I need to comment as I had on the other comparison. eINK will win for straight text reading although the 2 technologies are not comparative set aside that the Adam is being used here to be an e-readed. Kindle is not a touch based interface nor does it do any "Frame Rate" its like comparing my eye glasses to an HD Camera lens both used to "SEE" something but two totally different techs. I can live with the less than eINK to get my movies!

  • Meanwhile, I went with a used net book for one third the price of an ipad. I'll probably get a used adam in a couple of years.

  • I dont think its particularly fair to class the "pure white background" of the iPad as a bonus. That "pure white" gets tiring pretty quickly, especially on the eye. The whole point of the Pixel Qi Adam (at least IMO) is that it doesnt rely on a blinding backlight (as the iPad does), but on transmissive, transflective lighting. Obviously that does mean it cant compete with the iPad on bright whites!

  • Its called REPLIGO reader....

This video of a Pixel Qi Adam - shows how the Adam's screen is "poppier" - whiter background for e-reading. I guess you camera isn't very good folks.

Glare is everywhere on a tablet!

  • guys...stop rambling about popping! ITS A tablet vs an E-reader! The ipad...is very "poppy"...yes. Personally I don't like white backgrounds - I prefer them to be slightly grayish like the Adam. I think its softer on the eyes...

    Thanks for the review though.

BTW - repligo go is the best PDF browswer and you can just TAP to TURN pages.

  • NotionInk has yet to release their ereader software so right now as far as software functionality goes, we are subject to the whims of whatever android phone ereader software is out on the Android Market. Once Honeycomb is released the software side will greatly improve for not just Adam but all android based tablets (that support honeycomb that is).

  • I get the idea that the iPad and Adam aren't the best eReaders, and if you're doing a lot of reading, you'd be better off just getting an eReader, it seems like buying a netbook to use as an MP3 player with the tablets. That Kindle sure pops by comparison. Thanks for showing this.

  • Is the brightness setting on the Adam at max in this video? It does indeed seem pretty dim compared to the others. How do photos/pictures look when you turn off the backlighting?

  • @SSJChar Yes the brightness was maxed out.

  • @SSJChar the Pixel-Qi screen is designed to be easy on the eyes like e-Ink and readable in direct sunlight. If you want a device with an eye-searingly bright backlight (indoors only ofc) then buy an iPad

  • Right .so the adam does not do well compared to e-ink or a piece of paper. I allready knew this, and I assume just about everyone else did aswell. What I REALLY would like to know is how the actual reading-experience is in PQ-mode. on a bed with bad light at an angle or something, and not in massive direct studiolight. In this vid, the PQ looks suprisingly good compared to what a lot of the hysteric teenagers have been writing in their reviews. So, can you read in PQ mode on it, and is it comfy?

  • @tokrika Yes its fine, the Adam Pixel QI is different from other computers that use it, because of the way Notion Ink uses their glass technology. They basically have 2 layers of glass which makes the Pixel QI not as evident as single screens employing the technology. Personally I don't like that mode, its only useful in direct light.

  • Have you guys tried the matte protector on a wet application?

  • So spill it. Which tablet / reader do you feel is the most product for the money? Is the Adam worth it to have the HDMI out?

  • @Techknowatlas They both have their virtues, adam is one of the best android tablets for pure specs and hdmi out 2 usb outs, while the ipad as none of those things. Although Apple has better apps via app store.

  • @goodereader The Adam not having the Google Market will be a moot point once Honeycomb is out. Only reason the Adam does not have it now is because it is running Froyo and is not a "phone"( Galaxy tab was declared as a phone) which would violate Google's terms.

  • Can you take off the Screen protector from the Adam to have a proper comparison ? Im just saying this because i had the default one that came from factory and i felt the same issue. So i took it off with some tape.

  • Can you compare Adam LCD version vs iPad and how good the black and white stands out in comparison?

Also is the LCD version vivid in colors in comparison to iPad/LCD monitor and how good is it while reading under dark and in house use

  • Compare it along the lines as engadget did here; engadget.com/2011/01/05/notion-ink-adam-hands-on-preview-video/

  • Try these tests outdoors pls.

  • Did you put the matte screen protector??

  • Could you please show adam with the screen light set to LOW LEVELS not completely off as it is too dark. I heard that for indoor reading it's OK with brightness set to low??

  • E-readers are getting so cheap, it's probably going to be more cost-effective to get a separate tablet (for color and movies) and e-reader (for novels), rather than trying to get a jack-of-all-trades screen. Pixel Qi's contrast is decidedly meh here. But I need to see one for myself to judge how much of an issue it is.

  • how long is the runtime of the battery?

  • @DDenker 14h of heavy usage .. notion ink said 16 h

  • you basically get two bad screens with the Adam Pi-Qi Version, the idea of having a hybrid was/is great but in this case the sacrifice in quality is way too big.

Someone posted the specs of the LCD-version screen and it seems way better than the Pi-Qi ( 500:1 contrast vs 100:1, 275cd/m² vs 165cd/m² brightness, better viewing angles), not as good as the Ipad but excellent value for the money. So better save the 100 Dollars that the Pi-Qi costs extra and buy a Kindle or Nook.

  • @Eurobubble70 ... the thing with the nook is it bc of build in battery , it's 100% sure u will have to throw it away after using it for 2yr or so ( unless u wanna send it to manufacture to replace the battery).

  • This Video was intended to show off how the Adam performs as an e-reader ONLY in this video!! It was meant to show people who were intending to read allot on this device how it compares against two of the largest industry staples. Of course we do not compare tons of software, usb interfaces, DLNA, apps and everything else. Its not fair to compare the Adam to these refined machines as of yet because of the youth of the Adam. Hardware is Hardware and that won't change.

  • This is just another bash Adam video. How can you compare a tablet pc to a ereader. It's like comparing a calculator with a desktop pc!

Also about the comparison with iPad, they compare application version, not the tablet itself. Let's try to hook up a keyboard and mouse to the iPad!!

  • @johanjdevos Why would you want to hook up a mouse? And there are many ways to hook up keyboards... Learn your manners

  • these guys always somehow miss something in their reviews, and from what i've seen the matt screen in other review IS just as responsive.

There are already hacks out that improve the adam's UI (awd) while still having the eden capability, yet these guys don't do their homework and forget to mention it.

While they are hacks, I have no doubt that these will come as updates.

  • Guys, Point taken with regards to the screen difference, but Aldiko, which is an extremely popular ereader for Android which Kicks the Kindle Readers Butt, allows you to tap the screen once for page turning.Making The Adam much faster. PS apply Matt screen if you want to reduce glare. I am surprised u haven't heard of it

  • @sajidris turn out the matt screen make the Adam less responsive so they took it off .... and the pixal Q isn't as good as expected .

  • You haven't put the screen protector on.

  • You have to put the screen protector on.

  • update the adam

  • Get used to adam and review it. Don't do half reviews....

  • I remember one of you guys eating/chomping in the background during the unboxing. That was really professional!

    Two questions-

    1. Have you guys applied the update?

    2. Did you turn off the ambient light sensor and manually set the display brightness to maximum on Adam when comparing with the iPad (the iPad was really bright!)?

Maybe I should reframe the first question -

    1. Have you guys, like, applied like, the update and stuff?

  • @MrPratikArora Agree. I believe that they have the ambient light-sensor on.

  • ..like the reflection of like the whole room..you know there's like ceilin'.. you know walls & everything..

    Wow, you're good!

  • The way I understand it, the Pixel Qi mode was made for use outdoors and the backlight for use indoors. It would be interesting to see how the two compare on that basis, one test indoors with the adam backlight on and another outdoors with the adam backlight off vs the kindle screen.

  • @gregotheamazin It was advertised as an alternative to E Ink (and called e-ink mode) so one could asume it woudn't had dark grey "white". :( Even Sipix looks better than this.

  • Good Video. I think I can compromise on the contrast given that its running android and not Apple's crippled IOS.

  • And flipping isn't a drawback...

  • With every page**

  • Kindle flashes black with every p

  • Good hardware comparison.. just that you need a bit of more training on adam compared to kindle or ipad.

  • As far as I know (seen it in other videos and Notion Ink told it, too), Adam comes with a matte screen film which you just have to stick on the screen.

The result is you have an Adam with a matte screen! Maybe you should compare both screens (matte Adam and Kindle) again.
