we used to find lodestones by Clearlake - anywhere around Mt St Helena, really. Prolly anywhere near Death Valley too... i was told they're volcanic magnetite, igneous metamorphic ore, so they resemble meteorite stock in those respects; also since they're ejecta they can be on a surface/strata far away from their home. and yep, i've seen 'em used as totem stones too. I would. Hell, i'll use a speaker magnet. It's the Apache way!
Right... I am a meteorite expert and a very successful meteorite hunter. I've written articles for science magazines such as Meteorite, Sky and Telescope, Meteorite-Times and have been in meteorite related documentarites including "Cash and Treasures" on the travel channel. The Meteorite I found on that video was sent to UCLA where Dr Alan Rubin classified it for me as a Meteorite called Red Lake #64. But you try to say you know more?? Give me a break!
What I'm saying is it is a meteorite that has the appearance of being carved. Folks used to carry around Medicine Bags with carved stones, and meteorites were prized possesions, finding a carved one one the shore of a lake would not be uncommon.

Thanks for your input. It appears that the meteorite you found in your Hunting on a lakebed pt.1 is a Shaman Stone. If you examine it under a loop, you should see Tool-marks. The general subject is a Skull with a pointy Hat, that spits rock. On good quality stones, the hat has an emblem of a Buffalo head and a carved meteor.
