  • The singer tries to steal the show...but its contrived...go back to your hippy

  • Great song. Played too fast. Fuck I hate it when bands do that.

  • Helme(t) clearly loses his voice half way through the song and can't hit the higher notes. Simple as that. Misses out a chunk then tries to almost speak the lyrics before hoping the crowd will save him by singing for him. It's a bit of a shame cause you can here his throat tighten up then give up. No monitoring issue

  • @dean87bwfc LG thinks he's John Lennon, but he's not.

After watching this clip many times now the fault lies with the drummers crap vocals, very poor! Helme is a legend!

  • Great track (recorded) bit iffy Live, bad monitor issues, flat drummer vocals, it's a shame it didn't go better but the album track is fookin ace

  • that guy thinks hes LG and hes NOT

  • @dean87bwfc He knows his copy, and proud of it.

  • @dean87bwfc no he doesnt. hes under instruction from a squire power.

  • Too true sheer class

  • I'm a huge Squire (and Seahorses) fan, but not only did Helme's vocals let this down, but Squire was playing in the wrong key for the most explosive rundown of the solo (6.27 - 6.36)...bit of a shame really

  • Andy Watts was bang on the money!

  • Sounds like there are monitoring issues for the vocals. Other live performances by the Seahorses have the vocals in tune and there can be no other reason for their poor quality here.

  • @FullMontyUK You're deffo onto something here. The way Helme leaves large chunks of the song out (some of the most important parts too, second chorus especially!), the way he shakes his head and looks so frustrated at 2.23 then looks over at Squire as if to indicate he's in trouble...I know from singing myself live for years that sometimes it doesn't matter how good or powerful a singer you are, if your monitor mix is terrible and you're playing with a loud band, the only way is down

  • @WingersHampsteadHome It's also an outdoor gig! Inside there is usually a bit of sound rebounding off the walls to give you a chance. I've played small outdoor gigs with little or no monitoring and as a vocalist you know you're out, as Helme clearly does, but you can't get a clue as to whether you're singing sharp or flat. Incidentally, I saw the band at Essex University in June 1997 and they were spot on, if a little short of material to fill out their set.

  • @FullMontyUK You're right, the outdoor factor with the wind blowing the sound all over the shop is another bugbear. It's a horrible feeling for a singer, knowing you're not able to hear the notes you're hitting and sensing that you're missing them but not knowing whether to raise or drop a semi-tone or whatever...and then you're thinking that the crowd is thinking you can't sing! I saw The Seahorses at their last gig (supporting The Verve at Slane Castle) in '98, they had more tunes by then

  • Squire left the roses for this shyte.

No wonder Ian still bears a grudge.

  • This song is not to unhappy 'to play, this is a great song

    !

  • GODLIKE performance from John Squire tho.

  • The worst vocal performance I have ever heard in my life,no wonder Squire sacked him.

  • vox abit outta tune in the chorus!

  • Lest we not forget the drummer,he was fuckin good! Shame about the dodgy vocals though but yep, squire was on it! No surprise there then lol!

  • Shame the quality Is shit on this, and the vocals are awful, squire on the other hand is fuckin awesome!great guitarist sadly missed, wish he would come back and do something.

  • strutting shite...

  • It's crazy how you can go from a busker in York to playing Glastonbury

  • 50,000 idiots.

  • crap

  • I make no wonder Chris is dropping out on the chorus. The drummers backing vocals are horrendously flat.

  • I make no wonder Chris is dropping out on the chorus. The drummers backing vocals are horrendously flat

  • Good of Chris Helme to fuck off off-stage mid-song to let the real talent play...

  • I was there, and at the time knew Chris vaguely(friend of a friend) and he was plastered the set just got worse and worse .....lol he was quite good sober but terrible on this occasion.

  • @TheDocfonz Your not wrong, what was the name of that other singer that was a bit hit and miss?........Ian something

  • @Robcatist Curtis?

  • @Jcahalane i was thinking Brown to be honest lol

  • @Robcatist I agree with you, Ian Brown's vocals are and were complete hit and miss

  • Everything except the vocals are really good here

  • chris helme is terrible here!!! OUCH!!!

  • Love under Will - lucky old Will eh!....

  • Do It Yourself - Probably the greatest album of the 90's, i love it...top 5 anyway

  • Its good to se John so freely in this video :)

  • Wtf?! Love this song. Love the album. JESUS ! VOCALS!

  • All their voices are as flat as a chinese mans face, but fuck, would I care? No, because just being there - the atmosphere - the sight of of geniuses at work - Squire's god like talent- would be worth more than the good music.

God Squire, where the fuck are you now? We. Want. you. Back.

Screw your gay little art exhibts, play the FUCKING DAMN GUITAR LIKE A GOD AGAIN!!!!!

  • @StudioNovusatRoblox

I love the tact and sensitivity to both sexual preferences and races you displayed in your post!

In the meantime... if you come to America, and somehow we meet... wear body armor.

    Anyhoo...

Squire is amazing, best guitarist of the 90's (and beyond)...

  • Squires intro is fucking class

  • I was there......

  • @kjt1981 I totally agree! Brutal!

  • How much did that little busker twat wannabe liam gallacher and that wannabe arteest try to be jimmy page theres a reason why ian brown is still around and these twats aint.

  • Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law (AL I:40) and

Love is the law, love under will (AL I:57).

The central goal of a Thelemite (as adherents refer to themselves) is to discover and perform his or her True Will, which is generally defined as the innermost Nature or proper life course of the individual. The techniques used to achieve this goal fall under the heading of Magick.

  • man that drummer's vocals on the chorus are awful

  • waha i bought this song from woolworths

  • saw them at the mayfair in newcastle first gig i ever went to

  • Any doubts on chris helmes vocals? Just type in chris helme and listen to him on his own! The guy's tremendous!

  • @j66hng Agreed.

  • @j66hng dunno about Chris Helme's, but the drummer here sounds horrible on the second chorus when Helme gives it over to the crowd.

  • i was there too, was good to see j.s. play live but i think chris couldnt keep up with it vocally, but all in all it was a good set, i wont forget it

  • Considering this was about the time Love Is The Law was released as their first single Chris Helme dosen't half milk the moment good on him but that drummer was a bit of a wanker so they say.

  • The Seahorses very own 'Stone Roses at Reading 96' moment

  • I hate that I will never see Squire live! It depress me a lot, such a OMFG guitarrist

  • I saw Seahorse's live at the Barrowlands in 97, they were amazing.

Before they came on stage the crowd chanted "Squire! Squire! Squire! Squire!......" for ages.

  • i was at that gig too! still got the t shirt for a fiver outside! best gig ever, just before Christmas!

  • @lilackitsune i know....

  • @lilackitsune The opportunity came up again!

  • @lilackitsune Its comin mate

  • I was there, the weather was appalling and it was a miracle that any band played, the stage was sinking and everything. Monitors were fucked as well as the sound, what a tune though!

  • Spoke with Chris Helme about this last year and in his words he couldn't hear a f*** thing for Andy watts the drummer. Still class though..

  • Definitely something up with the sound there. The Seahorses were the first band I ever saw live, and I can assure when they played that it was spot on. Squire's playing was amazing.

  • monitor problems. without them, all bands die (and it is NOT their fault, it is only their agony to bear. All they can do is wish death upon the unprofessional soundman.)

  • The singing's fucking attrocious

  • I didn't know what you were talking about until the chorus. its that drummer, he can't sing for shit the fucking reni wanna be!

  • nah it sounds ace yeah john is fcking brilliant why did he quit

  • squire is an amazing guitarist but this sounds waful..something fucked up with the sound i think!

  • Squire is a god, end of

  • it is what it is, isn't it.

  • co writen with Liam Gallacher

  • No It wasn't, Liam got credit for love me and leave me, but he admitted they did that for the crack. Squire wrote Love is the law when he was with the Roses, and brown rejected it.

  • squire is a fucking knob. this sounds terrible

  • GOD, look at the state of this! jesus its clear that the seahorses were pretty much a vehicle for squire's Zeppelin complex! not so much a band as one mans ego trip!

  • Yeah, great isn't it?

  • lol i almost feel sorry for chris after watching this

  • John Squire is GOD!!!!!!!!

  • God Helme's voice is awful here lol

  • Whatever John and Ian will do they will always be slaves to their past. And it´s their own fault or brilliance. Stone Roses will always be known as one of the best english bands ever.

  • 2 true mudhoney, parts of this live performance are just horrible.btw

  • get ian on vocals and it would have sounded much better .

  • thats true and if you think about it, that really says something about the vocals in this performance

  • I was there! The weather was awful and the Seahorses were crap. I remember we stayed for about 10 minutes before wandering off

  • Lol. the weather looks complete shit. I think had the seahorses just dumped their lead singer and had John Squire solo for an hour or so, that would have been more entertaining.

  • The song is excelent and i love the guitar solo but this performance is pretty shit. The band do look a bit bored like someone else said, and they're voices aren't enthusiastic or caring

  • Fucking great song but I always cringe when singers tell the audience to sing and no one does!! Ha ha

  • Rubbish. Okay for a pub gig but this is a headline slot at a huge festival. Squires solo is just a guitar wank. The band look bored and it's all just a showcase for the guitar playing.

  • Chris Helme, is a cock. No point in going down the front giving it large when you cant even sing the fucking song. Shite band, shite tunes, I'm gutted John Squire formed this shite. I'd pay more to watch him paint!!!

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

    I agree....

  • Squire looks like Jimmy Page in the beginning...brilliant!

  • Whatever happened to guitar solos?

  • john squires riffs always sound the same....just an oppinion!

  • Possibly my favourite song of all time, what an intro!

  • And the man chris helme, dont forget!!!

  • and in the shadows was a man called ian ,just waiting .just waiting for his time.

  • Love this tune. Thanks for the post.

  • Ouch! stick to drumming drumming man.

A great brit pop track back in the day.

  • the legend that is john squire

  • this is a killer track. awesome. i want a les paul now, as well as a 12 string rickenbacker 360 so i can play the smiths. stone roses are better than this band though.

  • its not the guitars that make u sound like them its how YOU play

  • as well as the guitar you knob. i dont own a 12 string, therefore i'd like one. johnny marr wouldnt get the same sound on a 6 string.

  • then why would people pay £10000s for guitars if you could make a £30 one sound the same? theinck is right, you are a knob

  • that message was meant to be for merlinmancer btw

  • woohoo chill out beansprout i was just saying that you dont need to have the best guitar in the world to sound good i was giving him some advice not knocking him its just that iv seen so many stupid people go out and buy expensive "axes" just because some one else has one and they userly cant play the guitar at all sorry theinck if i have upset you in any way

  • John Squire is smokin...one of the best guitarists alive.

  • i was there.

  • aww man.. i wish i was. :o(

  • FUCKA!

  • 10/10 Indie Classic. One Of The Best. I Was In The Crowd. Brilliant. Check Out Chin&Tindog.

  • Squire's on fire.. as he always was, and its not the worse thing to wanna be Jimmy Page. Page = Guitar God!

Guy on the drums ruined it really.

  • with his singing i meant.. soon as they all shut up musicly it was awsome!

  • to all who diss out the sea horses

    FUCK YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah they were a great band...a talentless busker, a talentless Jimmy Page wannabee and a couple of session musicians, blinding! Dickhead

  • yeh the singers pretty bad but fuckyou you dirty cunt! SQUIRE IS GOD!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah wise up. He's amazin & has a unique style. If u listen u can hear he has many influences. Those Japanese scales he played on I Wanna Be Adored are awesome. It's gotta be 1 of the best fukkin guitar intros to a song ever made. Yeah the singers not hot but u try singin through a mike with 2/3 guitars & drums full blast behind u. Maybe he had a sore throat, maybe his monitor wasnt workin right & he couldnt hear shit..who gives a fuck? Nobody's perfect. Least he's up there doing it.

  • This is fucking embarrassing. A decent guitarist reduced to some dumb fuck kareokee Jimmy Page. Why why why? Whats wrong with sounding like John Squire?

  • who gave this cunt a mic? shit! what was john thinkin?

  • What is it with Squire's obsession of being in bands with singers who can't sing?

  • john squire ..perfect

  • wow..great vocals dude, spot on,note perfect.this is not a monitor problem its the fact he cant fucking sing live, there album was auto tuned to fuck..he sucks im sorry but mr stone roses is the man

  • This is a great song but they sometimes make that silly mistake bands make of playing it too fast. It wrecks the groove of the song when they whip through it. Yeah it seems the monitors killed their chances at getting the vox in key. It really goes off the rails when the backup kicks in, yikes.

  • SEAHORSES - HE HATES ROSES

  • THE SEAHORSES - HE HATES ROSES

  • SESOR SETAH- SESROHAES EHT

  • vocals are way off

  • he knows he's lost the pitch and gives up. it can happen. backing vox are in tune. possibly monitor probs.

  • Andy watts on drums?

  • what is chris helme doin nowadays?

    does anyone know?

  • solo

  • is he not still working with a band called the rakes aswel?

  • He gigs solo in smaller venues, think he still does some seahorses stuff

  • I was in the audience for that one.

  • f**king good, ian brown would be excellent!

  • the 3rd coming. Great!

  • amazing

  • the singer looks like jason pierce

  • f*** me - that was awesome...

  • excellent...

  • jhon squire the best

  • If it wasn't for john, i wouldn't have persevered with the guitar..sad he doesn't play live anymore..more into painting.

BEST GUITARIST OF MY GENERATION...FULL STOP

  • Yeah, Helme used to work in our local music venue in york-fibbers. Great lad, met him a couple of times doing acoustic gig`s there. great album and very underrated album. Remember headlining Tom HIngley at fibbers Chris??? I had ticket no.1 you signed it and both were great. Love IS the law. x x x x x x x x

  • Must have been pure nerves in the first chorus, it was awful! I remember telling my friends how good the album was at the time, this was sadly their introduction to them, don't think they bought the album! If I remember rightly Chris Helme was spotted busking outside a shop by John Squire and thrown straight in at the deep end, correct me if i'm wrong. Still my favourite band of '97.

  • Ahem, that should have been 1997 (not 2007!)

  • Ah yes, i was there! The highlight of Glasto 2007 for me!!

  • ....mate, slow down on the illuminating chemicals...your loosing decades..!

  • chrish helme is a penis. he can't sing. But then again nor can ian Brown on certain roses live stuff.......

  • Bollox!! Helm sings only 3 bum notes in this song...Brown did manage 3 in tune in his entire fkin career...charismatic, part of a good band, maybe, a singer....our survey said!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lol only 3 bum notes? You sure about that mate? :o) Musically this is a great performance but the singing is so so bad, half the time the lead singer doesn't even bother finishing his lines cos he's messed them up that bad.

  • Remembered watching this on TV and couldn't believe how bad Chris Helme's singing was. Studio version most memorable moment of their brief life as a band, LP is ok. Drummer was also pretty good. Also did another ok single 'You Can Talk To Me' before splitting. Always burdened by Roses legend I thought.

  • This song bring back some wicked memories..

    Great times...

  • OMG i was there!!!!! n can i just add how sexy is chris helme?? mmmmmmmm

  • tracks ian brown has wrote by himself-sunshine,deep pile dreams, ufmb, lions, free my way, love like a fountain, upsidedown,d or c,homeis where the heart is= all shite and not a patch on what squire has wrote

  • this is absolutely awful , listen to the chorus.

  • I was there.

    Not.

    :D

  • Thats known as a john squire moment Woo Hoo ..

  • better than any of todays indie

  • as time proves was good at time but still shite sorry .squire still tryinig second comming

  • Chris Helme's a fuck-wit...nothin but a wank stain on his mummy's bed

  • no-one gives a fuck bout ya porn sites, go post elsewhere ya cock

  • i wud jump at the chanche to play along side squire who wuden you can only be brill with squire hes a legend n brings the best out of people a mean ian brown was shite at singing but squire brought the best out of him think after jhon left the roses it fell apart but saying that they brought the best out of each other respect 4 the upload

  • 10 year fluck sake but a legeng=d of a track classic live too YLT

  • john squire is amazing

  • damn 10 years ago now this

  • Terrible performance man what the fuk!

i mean dont get me wrong johns a fuking legend and the solos sweet but as for the singer he he he!

  • tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

  • crackin guitar player

  • Great performance - great band. Chris' new band The Yards are just about to release their 2nd album.

  • vocals are shite

  • Guitar aside, they are a shocking band. Squire put them together haphazardly. Chris Helme was a busker in Yorkshire and Squire wasn't sold on him for months before finally bringing him in as the frontman. He was always going to be scrutinised as the lead singer along side John ,but he really did not have much of a chance with Ian Brown being held in such legendary status. Cant really blame him for that, all of us would have jumped at the chance to play alonside Squire.

  • squire always wanted to take center stage with his long winded guitar solo,s.but he never took the stage off brown

  • ian's still learning to sing live!!!! mr squire to you is pure class!! if you could do what he can with a guitar you wouldny be postin comments on here!!!! me either for that matter!!! haha!!! I got to see this live twice at t in the p, quality!!!

  • Ian who is still learning to sing?

If you mean Ian Brown mate then get a life and don't post comments on subjects you know little about. I believe Chris Helme is on the vocals here.

  • Mind blowing guitar!

  • The guitar solo is pure class

  • Look at Chris going down to the crowd, like he is the BIG star!! Ha ha, people only listened to the Seahorses for one thing, and it aint the singing!!

  • yeah m8..was all about squire..the legend

  • Davey - you should check out The Shining - Quicksilver, it's on here if you search for it. It's my best mate on drums for the Seahorses album you have and The Shining - He has a new band on the way and they freakin rock !!!

  • gotta say ive got a copy of the 2nd seahorses album that wasnt released......dunno its name either but its pretty good if ur a john squire fan!

  • Titheed - Read mu comment properly you dumbass, I said I was in the studio when they were laying down tracks for an album that was never finished, I did not say it was DIY. Read this correctly before you respond.... !!!
