Sheryl Sandberg (Facebook COO) views the lack of women in her industry as a 'problem', and sadly, she limits her thinking to the women's share of the pie. Marissa Mayer (Google VP) says the lack of women is not a 'problem', it's a 'symptom'. It's not how much of the pie's share is women; the real problem is the pie isn't big enough. That's all.
Feminism pisses me off. Women and men will never be equal completely, because we are different and feel different things than each other. Men have always been the breadwinners for all of human history. Men's brains work differently than women. Women are more emotional, true statement and can make rash decisions. Men can more clearly think things out overall. This don't bias, it's science.
I’ve noticed the attitude from managers from both men and women that everybody would want to do their job if they only had the opportunity but this is false, most people don’t. Senior management is a stressful job with long hours that takes a lot of personal sacrifices. It is probable that women’s more sensible attitude to work/life balance is what is keeping them from these jobs.
Why don’t women want jobs in management: because it’s an awful job.
People underestimate what it takes to make an effective presentation and Sheryl puts forth significant points in a clear, engaging manner with the right amount of humor.
Addressing women's issues is an act of SUPPORTING and empowering other women. Just because a woman makes it look easy does not mean it was easy for her to achieve what has managed to achieve.
If this was opposite, and men weren't in enough poisitions of power... no one would care. Call the fuckin' Wanbulance, and step ya' shit up. Then maybe you'd have a female president.
I'm not sexist although my comment sounds ignorant. Women deff run shit behind the scenes more often than you think. Hilary behind Pres. Clinton was basically having a woman president. Why do you think he got acquited...? Cuz she was the one who was really calling most of the shots.
If women want to achieve in the professional world - then what is stopping them? Seriously, I am a male business owner and I will hire whoever is the smartest and hardest working that will make me more money. I do not care if that individual is a man or woman. We need to move beyond this myth that somehow society is repressing women. The only ones stopping them from achieving is themselves.
Make accomplishments your virtue - not playing a victim
I like where Sheryl is going with her message but she doesn't nearly spend enough time explaining why she thinks a world where 50% or more of corporations were run by women would benefit the human race? Is it because those corporations would give more flex time? More time off of work if you've just given birth? More vacation time? A greater chance to be promoted whether you're a man or a woman? Give me some examples! Otherwise, you're just a lot of hot air, lady.
@cutis1000 I'm quite sure that the reason why the human race would benefit from equal numbers of men and women in power is because there are equal numbers of men and women in the world. So this would mean the population were more accurately represented in power which means those positions can cater more adequately for the entire population. I feel that this point was probably not explained because she sees that as obvious.
@LaAlexSpalex Don't be a smart ass! Having equal numbers of men and women in power in no way would determine what exactly the agenda would be for the human race. Nothing is obvious. We need specifics when it comes to desiring change. Women can be seduced by power like any man. She can work against the better interests of her fellow women and man. Power corrupts and it would indeed be interesting to see what this world would be like if it indeed were run by women.
@cutis1000 Whether you think it is a given or not, this is clearly the idea behind gender equality in top jobs. When 50% of the population is prevented for whatever reason from obtaining these jobs... its pretty obvious why that is a problem to me. Noone is saying that women are better than men. Noone implied that the world should be run by women. The point is that women are equal to men so women should have equal access to high powered jobs. I don't get why this is so complicated.
@LaAlexSpalex "Noone is saying that women are better than men. Noone implied that the world should be run by women." Um you need to see the vid again and hear it this time, at the end sheryl is implying that companies all over the world would be better if run by women, oh please it will just make the diamond industry the No. 1 dealer ,there be governments/retailers with PMS issues and menopause.. I have more to say but it dont fit here.
Society's problems can be traced to the fact that people's egos are bigger than their abilities. The Peter Principle describes how people (both men and women) tend to rise to their "level of incompetence"--most people rise to a level where they perform incompetently because that job is beyond their abilities. If people set aside their egos and chose to remain at their "level of competence" instead of mindlessly seeking promotions to positions of incompetence, society would be wonderful.
Having pig headed leaders running everything from governments, corporations, banks, education , research is wahats wrong with the world and bringing down the economy. THeir main talent is dishonesty. If some women are feeling left out they can go to hell too. Women like men should work on a brave new business world.
The discrepancy comes down to biology. Women are naturally more about the home, stability, and children - all extremely important to maintaining a civil society. Men are usually about fighting, getting ahead, and exploring - also important if we want to survive. That's why there's more men at the top, because more men are fighters than women. And of course there is always the exception, the woman fighter, like Sheryl. This is just reality, and it's not bad. It's just our roles as humans.
@TheArfdog Yes, I agree that women have an irreplaceable role in the home. This important consideration sometimes escape many women and so they want to be in offices more hours and less and less at home. Okay, for some women this is needed for economic reasons but I suppose this is not the case for the majority.
It’s spooky to listen to her saying (3.42): “My daughter, who is three,… did that whole hugging and, like, crying ‘mommy don’t get on the plane’ thing”. She sounds like some alien creature reporting on weird human activities. “Thing”?
“Did that whole ‘hugging’ thing”? “Did that ‘mommy don’t get on the plane’ thing”?
I wonder if she ever got to do that “Biblical thing”. How about an “I love you” thing?
No doubt just "things" to be ticked off as "completed" in a neat little task list.
@peterf1: Of course being a mother is hard for her. Her inadvertent slip with "thing" makes that clear. I cannot imagine her ever saying something like, "My boss did that whole 'hello, how are you' thing and the 'shake hands' thing". No doubt she's good at her work, but that's besides the point. I just think of the many kids who tell us later in life that they wish their parents had been there for them physically instead of just being dutiful while leaving them alone or with nannies.
I agree that we need more women leaders. HOWEVER, putting yourself up as the everyday role model is VERY MISLEADING and INSULTING to most people. Your parents and family supported you through adulthood and gave you heavy hitter contacts to start your career. You were able to take riskier jobs because YOU HAVE NEVER HAD TO WORRY ABOUT MONEY. Your comments are only relevant to the top 1% and the rest of women in practicality have a very different path
@thetruthfuloneful: Very true. Malcolm Gladwell refers to such people as "outliers" in his book of the same name; he delves into the lives of various outliers in our society and shows how various other people, events and circumstances all added up to contribute to the achievements of these outliers. They certainly did not make it all by themselves without any help from anyone or anything.
If the US is ever going to have a woman President, this is how she should look like and be like. I do not like her topic here. But she is a very intelligent and beautiful woman. Sarah is far down from Sheryl's level.
LOL feminism is just being realistic. Thats like saying racism doesn't exist. Get OVER it and stop hating. Feminists just believe in gender equality. I don't see her hating on anyone. THANKS.
Isn't it ironic that the same people who have been instilling victimology into little girls, are now complaining why those girls aren't trying to succeed.
These same people have been telling little girls that there's some evil force trying to keep them down, but they're now surprise when girls aren't driven and ambitious. Feminism needs to apologize to women for making them fearful and pessimistic.
Yeah, but it's women (as well as men) who are judging dominant, talkative, assertive women negatively - cos they don't want to give up all the old passive privileges women get, so punish women who rock the boat.
And yeah, it is women gate-keeping the childcare and housescrubbing privileges - so let's close the hoary old loopholes to economic inactivity for women - otherwise (reality check) they'll take it.
Universities instill defeatism in women by filling them with male-blaming dogma.
I am suing LSE's Gender Institute for sex discrimination. If my lawsuit wins, it will effect the 900 women's and gender studies departments worldwide, which have filled women with such doom and gloom, instead of realization of opportunities narratives.
Read the press, listen to the interviews, watch the video here, and donate to the legal fighting fund at sexismbusters.
@zhabakrek I think you might be right about that. My comment still has 7 thumbs up, despite the horrendous misuse of English. Have you watched my YT vid yet? Tom Martin sues LSE's Gender Institute for teaching sexism.
Well, its good that she is voicing these concerns but her analysis needs more substance than just anecdotes and statistics.
I also wonder if Harry Potter books had been able to get the following they did, if J.K. Rowling had chosen to go with her real name "Joane Rowling" instead of the more tactful "J.K. Rowling"
@somethought I'm currently reading 15 or so of these "books" you "speak" of. You should check out the Humor section... I know they hide it from us at Barnes & Nobles but it's still there I PROMISE!!!
Can they out compete there co-workers and get there?
There is some good questions to answer. Otherwise this can be summed up into women be more assertive, confident and solve the problems as they happen.
@Allymeans "Boys and girls, men and women are treated differently.
It's a fact."
True,
Boys hear: If you fail, try again you evil ahole!
Girls hear: If you fail, find the nearest man to blame.
So yeah, feminist have a lot to answer for. They have destroyed many, many girls lives. Many girls have been told that there's a secret cabal that's trying to keep them down. Feminists keep teaching girls to blame and whine instead of try harder.
If she left out the part that women, "have to succeed" I might go for it. If that was her reason for speaking, she can't win. Never tell a woman she has to do something, and it doesn't matter if it's a man or a woman doing the telling. Her approach is wrong and her delivery isn't too bad either.
Women traditionally have ruled the world by being the power behind the throne. This happens by men 'secretly' (but more and more openly) being servants of women for their fleshly favors. See the video called "What Women Want is Worship".
It is the same reason why ethnic minorities and religious minorities do not get anywhere; discrimination and having a system set up for a certain segment of the population.
I think the difference is guys have much more testoserone, and they can't get laid if they're working at Denny's. Better job=better/more sex. Where for women better job= more shoes? Not nearly as motivating
This is the most realistic point of view on women in the workforce i ever saw. It highlights the female aspects of employment, points out the real problem, and all that without giving into sexism (or feminism, as it's called nowadays). In the contrary, she postulates *true* equality in the end. Quite an accomplishment.
From my experience working with women, I'd say it's because women call in sick too much and men always cover for them. Plus it seems every time you need their help with something they're in the bathroom. But I could be wrong. Maybe I just had the misfortune of working with the laziest women on Earth lol.
Dude... stay at home dad would be so badass. Watch the kids all day, take them out to the park and play with them, when things are done and chill you can watch porn or play video games! XD
She is perhaps the best speaker I have ever come across. Her talk didn't have one mistake. Her pace was just right. Each and every word was well though. Kudos!
Its wierd that she doesnt at all point out that men and women are different, on a biological level. We see the world in a different way.
Over a million years of hunter/gatherer roles is what our brains are made for... And that is why women tend to stay in the "cave" and look after the family instead of "getting food on the table"..
We are different? Why is this a problem?? I believe in equal rights.. But thats not the same as going for 50/50 men/women CEOs etc. at any cost...
why did they could out the standing ovations (i'm sure she received them)?
I fully agree with all her points not because i'm a feminist man but because i've eyes. she's just right. if you want to have true democracy than you'll have to integrate all people with equal shares.
@Creeno1 bullshit. you have no ideo how double standards and sexism work. it doesnt' change all by itself, but you're simply too fucking stupid to understand that.
you can't take anything when males have constructed a system where women are kept out. you know nothing. that's not "easy peasy," dumbass. tell women in afghanistan it's easy peasy.
No it doesnt change all by itself. Women need to get off their arses and do something themselves instead of asking for special treatment and asking for everyone else (especialy men) to solve their "problem".
We weren't talking about Afghanistan, now were we? Women in the western world have the same opportunities as men. They just choose not to take them (but some do).
Despite your name, you're reacting like a woman. Emotionaly instead of rationaly.
@Creeno1 i'm talking about the whole world, you stupid cum stain. there's a world out there beyond your xbox and fantasy baseball scores, i know that's hard to believe. men would be like afghans if they could get away with it here.
what special treatment do we get? less representation in govt? less money? you're so fucking stupid i won't even waste my time trying to teach you. your mother should have aborted you.
Quit sitting on your cunt, asking for a handout. Things wont change if you ask someone else to do your work for you. Women, and especialy feminists, tend to do that. The problem is too few women who are willing to dedicate the effort needed to achieve what men have. Less representation in govt, as an example, is because less women run for office than men. Its a fact. I never said you get special treatment. And why should you? Why should you be given special priviledges?
Special treatment? When did I say that? But YOU are asking for special treatment. Why should you get special priviledges? Work like the rest of us, and you get what the rest of us have. Simple. Low representation in government is caused by the FACT that less women run for office. Change that fact, and you will change the representation. Oh wait, that will require something of an effort from the women. And that, as we know, is unreasonable and oppressive. Right?
@Creeno1 OH MY GOD, AN IRONING COMMENT! THAT'S SO FUCKING ORIGINAL!
i though you would have said something about a sandwich or a kitchen, those are usually the best ones the male mind can come up with. i love how you bitches think it's the first time anyone has heard it. i understand males have problems with langugage and verbal communication, but this is getting ridiculous.
and you prove my point for me, it's too easy. you're just too stupid to see it. GO BUILD ME A HOUSE, BITCH.
oh you mean the substance of the argument such as: stupid old bitch, ballbag, cum stain, etc? Yeah, they are all good substantial arguments. You are propably the best debater in the primary schools schoolyard.
:).
If you mean men, as in people, then you are right. But their gender is inconsequential. Quit being a victim and blaming the world for your own problems.
"the data shows", she may be accurately reflecting current studies but she needs to cite them or I stop listening. Anecdotal "data" may be the core of her talk.
I find most women demand respect just for BEING in the work place. like it's some fucking magic trick. You don't demand respect, you earn it! I couldn't give less of a shit about anyone's emotions concerning their work. I don't give a shit about their families, home life or even themselves. I don't care at all. Just do your fucking job professionally and do it well-consistently and you will have earned my respect. Leave everything else out, having a cock or a cunt doesn't fucking matter.
I can't come to this page again. When i read the comments it just shows how huge of a role sexism has in America's society. I mean, I thought people would be discussing why women are seen as less effective in the workplace and apparently less smart too when every study shows there is no difference in IQ. And all I see here is people giving reasons why they KNOW women aren't fit for the workplace. Wow, the US has so much potential and greatness to it but on issues it scares me...
Everything would be a lot easier if people realized we are human beings in first place, each own with it's own personality.
It's not your gender, race, nationality or wherever that is going to determine your capacity or personality.
We should just respect each other and respect other people's individualities it doesn't matter if those people are men, women, black, purple, rich, poor or wherever.
I'm a woman and I don't feel that my grandmother or mother is unluckier than I am. I think they had the best profession in the world, motherhood. For if not of that, I would have not existed. :)
@scapati The difference is you have a choice... If you want to be a stay home mom, you can. If you want to work and do both, you can. They couldn't. Also, yes you would have existed, babys are still being conceived...
Good video, but since our species is not gender-neutral, so is it reasonable to expect our societies to be gender-neutral? Men and women are physically and, in particular, psychologically different, on average. This is not to suggest that we should enforce particular gender roles, but rather that we should not be surprised or dismayed if, on average, men and women make different life choices. Our nature should be used to help us understand this, but not to justify denying choice.
women are not equal to men. neither is superior or inferior. we play different roles in life its that simple. whats with both genders trying to fill both roles?
@pumitaproductions It's not both genders trying to fill both roles. It's just saying that if an individual is inspired to step out of this preconceived ang given role because of their personal beliefs and personnality, they should be able to do so.
@axelle32 yeah well if anyone wanting to leave your role pretty much requires some preconceived notions. like i'm a girl and i want to become a CEO. or i'm a guy and i want to take care of babies. both require you to be pretty fucked up to stray off from nature so much. in any case, im for freedom, so do whatever u want
@pumitaproductions What's wrong with genders wanting to participate in both "roles"? She never said men and women are exactly the same, she was trying to identify the reasons that there appears to be unequal opportunity for each - usually women in the workplace and men in childcare. It's 2012, we are all free to live any lifestyle we choose but there are various barriers to each gender achieving full potential in certain areas of life, a very worthy point of discussion I think.
@Cacaw1 Men are better at certain things, women are better at other things. Nothing wrong with trying to fill in anyone else's role, whats wrong is expecting equality when we're built differently. You don't see women competing against men in stronglifting championships because men are genetically stronger. Strengths and weaknesses apply to psychological characteristics too. Men make better leaders than women. That's nature. Women have better emotional intelligence. So they should stick to that.
Why do women only want the good jobs? That isn't TRUE equality that is supremacy. I never hear women complain about not registering for the draft. Why don't women want the death jobs with the highest death rates? Men carry the WORST jobs as well. With the highest death rates. Men carry the extremes, the top and the bottom. If women want to be CEO's then start your OWN business and build that company up. If you don't want to hit a glass ceiling start your OWN!!!
@paulavmv Women want more opportunities for jobs. WHy don't they go for the undesiirable ones?Feminists always talk about CEOS, predients, etc. But they forget that men are dominated as well. Why don't feminists ever talk about they want more women in the army? I never heard that in my life. WOmen like Sandra want all the power but not responsibilty.
@GozzyWozzy good jobs like what? maids? cleaning lady at the mall? prostitutes?
And you are misinformed, there are many women on the army now. In Brazil, I've seen many women working at the BOPE, which is one of the toughest professions I've heard of.
Women don't want only to be ceo, you are just being a prick.
I'm studying to be a developer and i don't want anyone telling me i ain't good for the job just because i wasn't born with a penis,
@paulavmv Women in America don't have to sign up for the selective services. Why don't any feminists talk about that? Women can vote without signing up for the draft. That is female privilege.
The biggest thing is women is that they have babies and they want to be a mother and wife as well. That is fine but if she is working as well then somebody will lose. The kids, her husband, or the job. Women should stop blaming sexism for all their problems and start blaming their selves.
@GozzyWozzy so you have to sign for the draft to vote? this makes no sense at all (btw, America is a whole continent, your country is USA)
My mother works and i'm glad she does, cause when I was 10, my father left us for a 20 yo bitch, and stopped helping us, if my mother didn't work, how would us have survived? I probably wouldn't be in college today ans would have no chances for pursuing my dreams and would be poor for the rest of my life
Responder a este vídeo... even though i have a better performance then 95% of the guys who I study with, and that's what happens. I'm tired of hearing that women can't program well, which is bullshit, I bet I'm a better programmer then 99% of the guys who say it. Most of the times I find male programmers on the web they keep bothering me trying to say that i know nothing, even though most of them are VB PROGRAMMERS (could they be lamer?)
@paulavmv If you are a decent embedded C / C++ coder and software architect, you won't have any difficulties finding a really good job. I didn't. And yes, 95% of the coders around are ... let's say mediocre. But you have to admit that female top-coders are rare. Just be proud on your achievements, haters gonna hate. But don't whine about it. Even had professors stating that i'm just a poser, and it was so easy to prove them wrong. Good people do recognize good people. Who cares about the rest?
The underpinning philosophy being promoted here is contrary to nature. Women have breasts that produce milk for a reason. They have wombs that carry babies for a reason. And that reason is not to ditch their kids to pursue a career; it's to raise their kids with integrity. We now have a motherless generation and it's only going to get worse. This is horrible.
@jstone1022 That reason is so that children can be born. Having milk for 3months after pregnancy means you shouldn't get a prestigious job? Playing the nature card to justify gender unequality in the business wolrd is pretty weak to me. So women (50% of the world population) should not get jobs at the top bc they have breasts? Well how happy are you to be a man right now? All women should sacrifice their life ambitions and desires because of their bodies? Then who would ever want to be a woman?!
@axelle32 "The feminist error was to embrace the value of the workplace as greater than the value of the home. Feminism has endorsed the public sphere as inherently more constitutive of women’s worth than the private sphere. Feminists have established as their criterion of success and self-worth an equal representation with men at the top of the career ladder. The consequence of this feminist scale of values is a terrible and unjust devaluation of women who work at home." - Dinesh D'Souza
@jstone1022 Wow that's really well written and... So manipulative! The conclusion: "The consequence of this feminist scale of values is a terrible and unjust devaluation of women who work at home". Right so this is saying that the feminists are devaluating the value of women. How frikin manipulative. Right because before feminism, women were not being devalued?
@GozzyWoy That's not the feminists' work. It has always been seen that way. Women who are housewives have always been seen as less than the men who work. Because the workplace is higher than the home to so many people. But not to the feminists. The feminists argue two things:
1. A woman taking care of children the entire day works just as hard if not harder than they would in the workplace. Therefore they should not be devalued.
2. Every woman should have choice of life and not be judged for it!
@axelle32 Also women are not entitled to ANYTHING. You have to earn it like men do. When you go work you have to EARN respect. Men get respect by EARNING it. I can walk into a workplace and not be respected until I prove something. Many valuable women don't have children because they hold women back. But society depends on that.
@GozzyWozzy Women aren't devalued because their work is home with the children, NOR because they work in an office. Women who are housewives are seen not as highly as working men. And women who ARE working are not seen as highly as working men!! Working or not working has nothing to do with being devalued as a woman. Just BEING a woman is why women have been devalued since human kind existed! THAT is the issue!!
@axelle32 There have been many societies in Africa and the Americas (before the Europeans took over) where it was a matriarchy. The women was the head. There were also societies where men and women were equal. The Europeans who used the bible and that said that men are ahead. So societies where men dominated went around the world and dominated everyone. That is why we are in the world we see today. Societies led by women lost. That is just the way it is.
@axelle32 Also, you have to earn your respect everywhere you go. Even men have to earn respect so if you don't get respect don't blame your gender, blame yourself. Not all men in this world are respected. If you are making your company a lot of money then they should promote you, if they don't then start your own business.
@jstone1022 (2) Devaluation of women has existed since human kind existed and devaluation of women in the workplace has existed basically since "the work place" existed. But it is the feminists that are devaluating women? Very well said but extremely manipulative, demoguogue, and false. So basically feminists should just shut up, that's how women will stop being devalued... Feminists NEVER say that taking care of children has a lesser value than a professional career.
@jstone1022 (3) And it's not what Sheryl Sandberg says here either. What is said is that women should have the POSSIBLITY, if they want to, to work and be considered as equal and not be judged. But she's never says that the ones who raise children are less important than the ones who don't! That was never said but somehow people love to summarize this 15mn presentation into whatever they disagree with. Listen to it again!
Also, using nature as a reason for unequality is just as dangerous and idiotic as playing the god card for what you believe in. Saying women having breasts and milk is a reason not to "ditch their kids and go to work" is your own interpretation of "nature". Just like racist dogmas used to state that god would only put a dark soul into a black body or homophobia justified by the following interpretation of the bible that "god hates fags". Don't underestimate the role of personal interpretation.
@axelle32 Let me get this right: Basing my arguments on nature is the same as basing my arguments on a diety? How so? And are you really pulling the "interpretation" card to disregard my appeal to nature? And what are you appealing to, axelle32? Are you appealing to your notion of "equality"? "Morality"? What are you appealing to? Because your "interpretation" argument turns around and shoots you, too, since whatever you're appealing to is your own "interpretation". Try something else.
aaahhhhaa.... all said and done, a bloke called Charles Darwin discovered something called "evolution"... which explains why in any species, the 2 genders are really not meant to do everything equally well!!
When she says, "How are WE going to fix this?"...exactly what percent of the population does SHE think share her idea that there's something that needs to get fixed?!!
-right off the bat, roughly 50% of the population are men
-next, of the people in a position of power who COULD actually see to it that this "fix" happens, this woman acknowledges that the vast majority of them are MEN to begin with!
Now why in the heck would men vote/take themselves out of power?.....
Hey Sandy....there are women, selling pictures of their bodies for money, right now!...and worse.
Should we promote THEM to top leadership positions?...you know, for their minds.
How about you go ahead and get the majority (51%) of WOMEN to agree with your half-baked (pun intended) concepts. Once you have the majority of WOMEN on board with your personal life goal, then and ONLY then should you even consider attempting to get the male population to go along.
The shortsightedness of your plight is astounding in it's thoughtlessness. You don't even have your "own team" on the same page with you.
YOU, want top corporate positions for women. Some women would like to have the right to get an education or show their face in public, others would like to stop having their genitals mutilated.
WAKE UP Sandy...you don't even know your own team, nor what they truly want. You're blinded by your own ambition and your group of corporate ladder climbing women friends (who will abandon their "post" the very moment their own biological clock says so...regardless of the situation). Is that the kind of leadership YOU want to follow?!?
Sheryl Sandberg (Facebook COO) views the lack of women in her industry as a 'problem', and sadly, she limits her thinking to the women's share of the pie. Marissa Mayer (Google VP) says the lack of women is not a 'problem', it's a 'symptom'. It's not how much of the pie's share is women; the real problem is the pie isn't big enough. That's all.

The question is: do we NEED to fix this? Is there anything actually there that we need to fix?

I have a few questions:
1. Why do we have too few female bricklayers?
2. Why do we have too few female coal miners?
3. Why do we have too few female construction workers?
4. Why do we have too few women working on oil platforms?
5. Why do we have too few women working as waste collectors?
6. Why do we have too few women building roads streets highways?
7. Why do we have too few women loading and unloading luggage in airplanes?
8. Why do we have too few women bitching about these "male fields" ?

Otherwise, you're just a lot of hot air, lady.
cutis1000 3 weeks ago
@cutis1000 I'm quite sure that the reason why the human race would benefit from equal numbers of men and women in power is because there are equal numbers of men and women in the world. So this would mean the population were more accurately represented in power which means those positions can cater more adequately for the entire population. I feel that this point was probably not explained because she sees that as obvious.
LaAlexSpalex 2 weeks ago
@LaAlexSpalex Don't be a smart ass! Having equal numbers of men and women in power in no way would determine what exactly the agenda would be for the human race. Nothing is obvious. We need specifics when it comes to desiring change. Women can be seduced by power like any man. She can work against the better interests of her fellow women and man. Power corrupts and it would indeed be interesting to see what this world would be like if it indeed were run by women.
cutis1000 2 weeks ago
@cutis1000 Whether you think it is a given or not, this is clearly the idea behind gender equality in top jobs. When 50% of the population is prevented for whatever reason from obtaining these jobs... its pretty obvious why that is a problem to me. Noone is saying that women are better than men. Noone implied that the world should be run by women. The point is that women are equal to men so women should have equal access to high powered jobs. I don't get why this is so complicated.
LaAlexSpalex 2 weeks ago

Wrong. We have too many leaders. How many are women or not is irrelevant.
MrCivilLibertarian 3 weeks ago 2
Having pig headed leaders running everything from governments, corporations, banks, education , research is wahats wrong with the world and bringing down the economy. THeir main talent is dishonesty. If some women are feeling left out they can go to hell too. Women like men should work on a brave new business world.
gewraldruzkalukaniuk 3 weeks ago
The discrepancy comes down to biology. Women are naturally more about the home, stability, and children - all extremely important to maintaining a civil society. Men are usually about fighting, getting ahead, and exploring - also important if we want to survive. That's why there's more men at the top, because more men are fighters than women. And of course there is always the exception, the woman fighter, like Sheryl. This is just reality, and it's not bad. It's just our roles as humans.
TheArfdog 3 weeks ago

RatRaceAce 3 weeks ago
@RatRaceAce Why leave out the part where she clearly states "This is hard. . ."???
Another thinly veiled attack on successful women as 'strange'. Sorry you missed the entire point of the talk.
peterf1 3 weeks ago
@peterf1: Of course being a mother is hard for her. Her inadvertent slip with "thing" makes that clear. I cannot imagine her ever saying something like, "My boss did that whole 'hello, how are you' thing and the 'shake hands' thing". No doubt she's good at her work, but that's besides the point. I just think of the many kids who tell us later in life that they wish their parents had been there for them physically instead of just being dutiful while leaving them alone or with nannies.
RatRaceAce 3 weeks ago
@RatRaceAce Yes but the key word there is "parents" - 1 man and 1 woman generally.
LaAlexSpalex 2 weeks ago
I agree that we need more women leaders. HOWEVER, putting yourself up as the everyday role model is VERY MISLEADING and INSULTING to most people. Your parents and family supported you through adulthood and gave you heavy hitter contacts to start your career. You were able to take riskier jobs because YOU HAVE NEVER HAD TO WORRY ABOUT MONEY. Your comments are only relevant to the top 1% and the rest of women in practicality have a very different path
thetruthfuloneful 3 weeks ago 24
@thetruthfuloneful: Very true. Malcolm Gladwell refers to such people as "outliers" in his book of the same name; he delves into the lives of various outliers in our society and shows how various other people, events and circumstances all added up to contribute to the achievements of these outliers. They certainly did not make it all by themselves without any help from anyone or anything.

These same people have been telling little girls that there's some evil force trying to keep them down, but they're now surprise when girls aren't driven and ambitious. Feminism needs to apologize to women for making them fearful and pessimistic.
AlekNovy 1 month ago 4
Yeah, but it's women (as well as men) who are judging dominant, talkative, assertive women negatively - cos they don't want to give up all the old passive privileges women get, so punish women who rock the boat.
And yeah, it is women gate-keeping the childcare and housescrubbing privileges - so let's close the hoary old loopholes to economic inactivity for women - otherwise (reality check) they'll take it.

True,
Boys hear: If you fail, try again you evil ahole!
So yah, that is sad.

But thats not the same as going for 50/50 men/women CEOs etc. at any cost...

at 02:38 "how do we change this" ?
Easy peasy: when women apply the same motivation and dedication to their careers as men do, it'll change all by itself.
All too often, women victimize themselves by asking someone else to grant them power and infuence, instead of taking it themselves.
Creeno1 5 months ago 3
@Creeno1 bullshit. you have no ideo how double standards and sexism work. it doesnt' change all by itself, but you're simply too fucking stupid to understand that.

karlsmith00 4 months ago
@karlsmith00
No it doesnt change all by itself. Women need to get off their arses and do something themselves instead of asking for special treatment and asking for everyone else (especialy men) to solve their "problem".
We weren't talking about Afghanistan, now were we? Women in the western world have the same opportunities as men. They just choose not to take them (but some do).

karlsmith00 4 months ago
@karlsmith00
Creeno1 4 months ago
@karlsmith00
Right?

Good video, but since our species is not gender-neutral, so is it reasonable to expect our societies to be gender-neutral? Men and women are physically and, in particular, psychologically different, on average. This is not to suggest that we should enforce particular gender roles, but rather that we should not be surprised or dismayed if, on average, men and women make different life choices. Our nature should be used to help us understand this, but not to justify denying choice.
UnicycleBloke 6 months ago
women are not equal to men. neither is superior or inferior. we play different roles in life its that simple. whats with both genders trying to fill both roles?
pumitaproductions 7 months ago
@pumitaproductions It's not both genders trying to fill both roles. It's just saying that if an individual is inspired to step out of this preconceived ang given role because of their personal beliefs and personnality, they should be able to do so.
axelle32 7 months ago
@axelle32 yeah well if anyone wanting to leave your role pretty much requires some preconceived notions. like i'm a girl and i want to become a CEO. or i'm a guy and i want to take care of babies. both require you to be pretty fucked up to stray off from nature so much. in any case, im for freedom, so do whatever u want
pumitaproductions 7 months ago
@pumitaproductions What's wrong with genders wanting to participate in both "roles"? She never said men and women are exactly the same, she was trying to identify the reasons that there appears to be unequal opportunity for each - usually women in the workplace and men in childcare. It's 2012, we are all free to live any lifestyle we choose but there are various barriers to each gender achieving full potential in certain areas of life, a very worthy point of discussion I think.
Cacaw1 6 months ago 4
@Cacaw1 Men are better at certain things, women are better at other things. Nothing wrong with trying to fill in anyone else's role, whats wrong is expecting equality when we're built differently. You don't see women competing against men in stronglifting championships because men are genetically stronger. Strengths and weaknesses apply to psychological characteristics too. Men make better leaders than women. That's nature. Women have better emotional intelligence. So they should stick to that.
pumitaproductions 6 months ago
Why do women only want the good jobs? That isn't TRUE equality that is supremacy. I never hear women complain about not registering for the draft. Why don't women want the death jobs with the highest death rates? Men carry the WORST jobs as well. With the highest death rates. Men carry the extremes, the top and the bottom. If women want to be CEO's then start your OWN business and build that company up. If you don't want to hit a glass ceiling start your OWN!!!

GozzyWozzy 6 months ago

Most of the times I find male programmers on the web they keep bothering me trying to say that i know nothing, even though most of them are VB PROGRAMMERS (could they be lamer?)
paulavmv 6 months ago

This is horrible.
jstone1022 7 months ago

Right because before feminism, women were not being devalued?
axelle32 6 months ago
@axelle32 Yes many women who are now housewives are not seen as highly as other women who work.
GozzyWozzy 6 months ago
@GozzyWoy That's not the feminists' work. It has always been seen that way. Women who are housewives have always been seen as less than the men who work. Because the workplace is higher than the home to so many people. But not to the feminists. The feminists argue two things:
1. A woman taking care of children the entire day works just as hard if not harder than they would in the workplace. Therefore they should not be devalued.
2. Every woman should have choice of life and not be judged for it!
axelle32 6 months ago
@axelle32 Also women are not entitled to ANYTHING. You have to earn it like men do. When you go work you have to EARN respect. Men get respect by EARNING it. I can walk into a workplace and not be respected until I prove something. Many valuable women don't have children because they hold women back. But society depends on that.
GozzyWozzy 6 months ago
@GozzyWozzy Women aren't devalued because their work is home with the children, NOR because they work in an office. Women who are housewives are seen not as highly as working men. And women who ARE working are not seen as highly as working men!! Working or not working has nothing to do with being devalued as a woman. Just BEING a woman is why women have been devalued since human kind existed! THAT is the issue!!
axelle32 6 months ago
@axelle32 There have been many societies in Africa and the Americas (before the Europeans took over) where it was a matriarchy. The women was the head. There were also societies where men and women were equal. The Europeans who used the bible and that said that men are ahead. So societies where men dominated went around the world and dominated everyone. That is why we are in the world we see today. Societies led by women lost. That is just the way it is.
GozzyWozzy 6 months ago
@axelle32 Also, you have to earn your respect everywhere you go. Even men have to earn respect so if you don't get respect don't blame your gender, blame yourself. Not all men in this world are respected. If you are making your company a lot of money then they should promote you, if they don't then start your own business.
GozzyWozzy 5 months ago
@jstone1022 (2) Devaluation of women has existed since human kind existed and devaluation of women in the workplace has existed basically since "the work place" existed. But it is the feminists that are devaluating women? Very well said but extremely manipulative, demoguogue, and false. So basically feminists should just shut up, that's how women will stop being devalued... Feminists NEVER say that taking care of children has a lesser value than a professional career.
axelle32 6 months ago
@jstone1022 (3) And it's not what Sheryl Sandberg says here either. What is said is that women should have the POSSIBLITY, if they want to, to work and be considered as equal and not be judged. But she's never says that the ones who raise children are less important than the ones who don't! That was never said but somehow people love to summarize this 15mn presentation into whatever they disagree with. Listen to it again!
axelle32 6 months ago
Also, using nature as a reason for unequality is just as dangerous and idiotic as playing the god card for what you believe in. Saying women having breasts and milk is a reason not to "ditch their kids and go to work" is your own interpretation of "nature". Just like racist dogmas used to state that god would only put a dark soul into a black body or homophobia justified by the following interpretation of the bible that "god hates fags". Don't underestimate the role of personal interpretation.
axelle32 7 months ago
@axelle32 Let me get this right: Basing my arguments on nature is the same as basing my arguments on a diety? How so? And are you really pulling the "interpretation" card to disregard my appeal to nature? And what are you appealing to, axelle32? Are you appealing to your notion of "equality"? "Morality"? What are you appealing to? Because your "interpretation" argument turns around and shoots you, too, since whatever you're appealing to is your own "interpretation". Try something else.

Now why in the heck would men vote/take themselves out of power?.....
.....would she?!!

@csreeves (cont.)
The shortsightedness of your plight is astounding in it's thoughtlessness. You don't even have your "own team" on the same page with you.
YOU, want top corporate positions for women. Some women would like to have the right to get an education or show their face in public, others would like to stop having their genitals mutilated.
csreeves 7 months ago
@csreeves (cont.)

@JudoNewZealandWorld that's probably why it's proven so popular, huh?
Ejwoods08 7 months ago
@Ejwoods08
Define "popular"....you mean like how cars all stop to gawk at a horrific traffic accident that has occurred?
Because that's the kind of "popular" this is.

This is all great. It's all fantastic. As long as all you people know exactly what the consequences of all of these changes are.
