Why was he driving at 100+MPH?

If he fell asleep that's one thing, I can see how he'd drift off the road. But to say he was traveling at that speed while asleep?!? IF he was asleep, he would've awakened as SOON as his tires hit the shoulder due to the noise. He could've turned the wheel at least a little bit! In the video, he was driving straight with no deviation of his course.

I heard from Brennan today .. he's back home and has no memory of the incident, he believes he most likely fell asleep because he hadn't been to bed yet. I'm accepting that.

Thanks for posting your account of the accident, and for the link to your blog. So many people were on the road at that time of the morning, and no one else was injured. That's the most amazing part of the whole ordeal.

@radicalrant The most amazing thing is that he survived and that none of us were harmed, I'm glad he's going to be ok and I'm glad the rest of us made it out without injury. There were far more people on the road than the video shows. there were several cars right along side and behind the officer who captured the wreck.. I don't believe in miracles, but if I did.. this would be one.

Whether this speeding was intentional or not, a free left lane might have lessened the damage. And from what I see it definitely could have been freed.

Update ... the rumor I heard below about his accelerator is just that, and pure bunk.. he had his second round of surgery today and is only now just responding .. but not vocally .. nods

the thing with pontiac firebirds only the right rear wheel turns when the gas is pressed not both rear wheels so my guess is he was in the middle lane, slammed his brakes when he saw the cop which casues that type of car to pull left hence why he turned when he went air born.

@Rcase37 What? that makes no sense. you have brakes on all four wheels. slamming on the brakes won't make the car "pull left". And not all Firebirds are one wheel wonders, some where limited-slip, and some even had a posi.

Locked brakes = You wiggle from side to side if you control the wheel properly.

Insane! Was he drunk? He was definitely lucky to have survived at all. The irony is that if he had been wearing a seat belt he would be mince meat. Very glad no one else was hurt.

@wordreet It's not been released if he was drunk or not, I suspect he had SOMETHING in his system.. he was arrested an hour early for drug posession, having an unopened container and something else.. I don't have it open to look right now.. he also had a minor in his car when he was arrested that was released back to her father's custody .. he got into the wreck 15 or so minutes after he was released

@johngraves42 conscious to a degree, he was breathing.. he attempted to vocalize but it was just noise.. he did seem to attempt to try to push himself up from the very un-natural position he was in, but unsuccessfully .. I would say he was aware to some point.. I honestly thought that by the time careflight arrived that he was gone.. but I was wrong

@cvnate619 I didn't even realize he was ejected and hurtling toward the parth of my car until I'd come to a complete stop, and at first glance I couldn't tell it was a person, he looked pretty messed up.. it looked more like a seat from the car at first, wasn't until a few seconds later that I realized it was him
