I'm a strong opponent of mind-twisting, emotionally manipulative methods to get people to ignore his/her need & right to FREELY search for whatever they need to make a free/full life for themselves & their families!I freed myself from my family's cult of choice because I valued my right to choose, search, explore in WHATEVER decent direction I wished!I had to be willing to endure back-biting of adult family members who discredited me to the children who I could have rescued:A HEAVY PRICE INDEED!
From what I've seen , the decision to leave a cult is a tough one, but the right one. I think your sense of self and personal morals must be very strong to do it and to undo all the conditioning that cults use.
One of the clearest descriptions of a person caught up in a cult. Bravo to you, I couldn't have said it better myself, and I have been working hard at getting my head clear the past 45 years! One thing I might add which you might disagree on if you like, but I think all religions are "cults" in their own way, it's just that some of them deliberately use dangerously manipulative mind control games.
Thankyou, credit needs to go to humanityandhistory for his info. I think the difference between a religion and a cult is that cults have a dictatorship as far as leadership goes and the level of control is far more extreme. Of course their are cults that claim to be religeous-they often take a well established religion to provide credibility for their cult. If you have experience of being within a cult- please share what it was that helped you leave and never underestimate your strength.
I totally agree with what 'menderfire9' said. To take the idea further, what if being a part of something big, be it "cult" or "religion", makes someone happier? Aren't we all in some cult or group, based on everything from music tastes to nationality?
Of course the word cult can have a more positive meaning- such as a cult film- where it's got a following for it's style. The meaning I am using in my video is the negative, dictatorship and manipulation that is deliberate deception using spirituality or religion as a cloaking device. I very much doubt that the broader meaning fulfills the points in my video.
But that's just my point dude, manipulation is subjective. It is called convincing someone when a "good guy" does it and manipulating someone when a "bad guy" does it. Don't take all this the wrong way I loved the video, it really got me thinking.
To a certain extent I agree with you. The characteristics I highlight in the video are ones found common in cults or high control groups- these are simply things that can flag up a cult or cult-like organisation.
The dividing line between a religion and a cult is the level of control or excesses of devotion. Cults also tend to use front groups and deception to sucker people in, then bleed them dry of money and dignity.

I guess so. I would add that someone who is willing to die for such a cult is overly devoted as per your definition.
