  • If you wanna hear sick blastbeats, check out Fleshgod Apocalypse for some nasty shit

  • I love this guys accent. Its funny to hear him talk.

  • i think my leg needs nutrition if i wanna do it that fast O_O

  • This just isn't what drumming should be in my opinion, but hey....

  • @DanLetts97 "Should" is a word that doesn't belong in the arts. It is what it was meant to be by its creator - it couldn't be anything else, or it would be a different piece of art.

  • @antonio610 Is crap a word I can use??

  • @antonio610 I'm gonna put that up as a quote. Dont worry, Ill give you credit for it :)

  • I like how this guy explains the history of blast beats and really gives more backround of it, rather than it just being noise like how alot of people say it is.

  • looks and sounds sooo gay the first 15 seconds lol.. but hes awesome.

  • @MarcioLeaoGna by being sponsored?

  • typical yank thinking everything improves when it gets to america lol.. cock

  • Evolved? Haha, its impossible, God created blastbeats!

  • lol 1:01

kinda wierd for roddy to go that slow right

    :)

  • what doesnt this guy have triggers on?

  • @iCecilJacksonI Currently he doesn't trigger his kit. He's been moving away from it. Look at his "flat foot" video.

  • @zgates look at the kick pedals, hes getting not even half a stroke, but it sounds like a full stroke

  • @iCecilJacksonI Yeah, in THIS video. I'm just saying CURRENTLY he's moving away from triggers. This is old.

  • @zgates well thats good

  • I just love how Derek talks and his accent lol

  • Now I can put them in my songs with the program's drums. lol :D

  • i fuckin love this guy

  • here is an example! FUCK YOU! LOL it's imposibble

  • @nigelic yes Neil Peart is one of the best. I wouldn't say the best. He just played allot of that jungle music. Lol. Not hating just saying. And it all depends on what you like. You are totally wrong saying Neil is the best. Too me'. But thats my opinion. n technical metal is way harder to learn. Play. And. understand. more the less. allot of technical drummers have the name for a reason cause its technical. Lol

  • let me get this right there are actually people that buy dvds on blast beats? you guys must really be retarded if you cant figure out a shitty blast beat

  • @PhilGoesToTheMayor ur such a tool the hard thing about blasting is the speed obviously and bomb blast are very hard to keep in synch especially at high tempos and speed drumming is fuking amazing if u dont like it go back and listen to ur really shitty ass neil peart drumming lol

  • @nigelic

shitty ass neil peart drumming? I feel bad for you...

  • @flippytheleper yes shitty ass neil peart drumming hes a pile of shit compared to george

  • @nigelic

nigelic: hurr durr durr speed is the most important part of being a drummer

    grow up idiot

  • @flippytheleper ur a fuking retard speed is fuking awesome and thats why i love extreme metal music

and i never speed was everything but id sure as hell love to listen to a 26o bpm blast beat over neil peart terrible music that i cud play myself and YES i can play his stuff ur a douche bag

  • @nigelic

question is, does your "playing" of his music feel good? I'm guessing no. By the way, before you go starting shit on youtube, or anywhere for that matter, work on your mastery of the english language

  • @flippytheleper wut the fuck? anything u play on drums feels good or at least for me thats pretty obvious

and about the english thing are u absolutely retarted?wut was gramatically incorrect about wut i said? NOTHING lol so stfu

  • @nigelic

man, I just feel bad for you, and any band or musician that ever plays with you

  • @flippytheleper whys that? im a decent drummer and i make good music and im optimistic so im sure lots of ppl wud love to play with me and besides ur not even backing up ur statements with anything theres no logic in anything ur saying so unless u have good proof or reasoning for ur dumbass statements get the fuk outa here and stop being a fukin plug!

  • @nigelic

I'm saying neil peart is one of the greatest drummers the world has ever seen, and that speed isn't everything. A drummer with solid time that can make a beat feel good is more likely to get hired for a gig than someone who can blast at 300 BPM

  • @flippytheleper and i agree with that

  • @flippytheleper Wow, dude you threw a bitchfit. Just cause some like to play fast doesnt mean you should get all pissy about it. We are all drummers(i dont know about you) and we all need to respect each other. Plus if you can play 300bpm then you can play in a death metal, grindcore, black metal band. Also learn a nice skank beat, and now your in thrash, and punk. From there you can get into rock and alternative. Yes death metal does give you many options. Suck it bitch.

  • one foot blasts like a pro! I do two foot blasts but i'm learning one foot blasts and so far i can go up to 230 bpm but not for a long time

  • youtube.com/watch?v=z_Y6UZ1pKEc

  • I think it went Morbid Angel then terrorizer, both came out around the same time(Altars of Madness and World Downfall). so there is no way to tell but Napalm death did influence, you know.

  • fast is not class

  • @mapexdrums

he doesnt say its class. and you dont know what other he plays. blasts are techniques and is a style.

  • WHY CANT I GO THAT FAST!!

  • @lolvids2 cause you're just human =p

  • @lolvids2 Because your human ;)

  • @maggotvenger94 practice dude !

  • @lolvids2 takes 10 years practice, that's why.

  • @lolvids2

it's not that hard if you practice hard

  • @JosiahSCooper i know. i posted the comment a while ago and i can do it good now, check out my drum channel ( Mrloldrummer )

  • @lolvids2 thaats what she said.

  • @xXNiTeBriGAdEXx that doesn't make sense.... a girl saying "Why cant i go that fast"

  • @lolvids2 call it 20 years of solid practise

  • @lolvids2 because your human... its pretty common condition, most drummers have :/

  • @lolvids2 watch?v=DW5nIvWOSLE&list=LLrR5t3oInPs31lAQYVm9uBw&feature=mh_lolz

  • @lolvids2 practice my friend

  • @lolvids2 because u don't blasturbate daily

  • does anyone know where to get this for free or could put the dvd on youtube that would be awesome

  • "blast beats started in europe in the late 80s" "pete sandoval of terrorizer, later morbid angel" what the fuck is he talking about?

  • @WelcomeToDetroitWimp HE SAID PETE MADE THE BLAST BEAT INTO A STRUCTURED BEAT,,NOT HE CRAETED BLASTING,MADE IT BETTER

  • hes wrong about the origins of blast beat. Plenty of american bands blasted before napalm death, before even morbid angel and suffocation. Check an american baptist church blast beat. they can be pretty fast

  • @AChozenSunn everything originated in europe, even you.

  • @Enysvar LOL everything originated in Africa, even you. Knowledge

  • @AChozenSunn No actually its modern Iran

  • @AChozenSunn and tony williams was doing it throughout the 50's.

  • @AChozenSunn CHECK OUT SEIGE(1983)repultion(1985)

  • wow, he can jack off fast O_O

  • danny careys drum set ftw!

  • Blasting isn't it just like 2/4?

A friend of mine told me it was x3

    So is it? ^^

  • i want more!

  • @ILiveForTheRofl he actually uses Vater:)

  • Why does he have his middle tom bigger then the one right to it? *_*

  • Silly blast beats!

  • first rule: hair up while drumming

  • Traditional, Bomb, Gravity, Hyper, Suffer, Down Blast... I've even seen a gravity blast where the guy does a gravity blast over the ride bell and snare. crazy shit!

  • @DagonMetalMusic would that happen to be gydo wyss

  • @pnutskater96 Yes indeed but some other guy, unknown name...

  • no wonder he doesnt have much bass power ... the beater is hardly 5cm of the head

  • @88MapeX88 Beater distance does not necessarily equate to power! If you pull a beater as far back as it can go and let it go you can get fuck all power if the motion is light, power = how hard you're hitting, the force. Some guys can have a small beater distance but still have power. This is a very common misconception.

  • @88MapeX88

Derek hits like a fucking beast man... FORCE, not beater distance.

  • ah derek..... you legend! :)

  • Wierd al plays drums?? What cant he do?!

  • this guy is a BEAST

  • If you analizw what he just did people like buddy rich, vinnie colaiuta did this kind of stuff but they used as a fill not as a grove

  • ...Oh, so that's what blast beats are? Just hitting them really fast?

Well fuck I put that in my heavy songs all the time. And occasionally at the end of the regular songs. Because I like when they go fast.

  • One of my best friends, who is a bad ass drummer, said something I really agree with. Blast beats are a way to hide the fact you never really learned to play drums.

  • @srsbassman Ye ofc.. Sry to say, but you gotta be stupid.

  • @srsbassman Yeah, i somewhat agree. They hide the fact that you cant keep up with the time signature so you just leave out 1/3 of the beat.

  • No time signature????? Are you deeeeef laddie!? YOU honestly have no proving grounds in this comment. Derek Roddy, George Kolias, Travis Orbin, Shannon Lucas, Jordan Mancino, Samus Paulicelli; all awesome drummers FACT; all use various forms of blast beats FACT; all use a metronome FACT. Are you going to sit here and say metronomes don’t have a time signature?

  • This video is obviously basic and not all that impressive, only because it’s instructional. You sit down at a kit and do a blast beat correctly it will be in time.

• @mijikle whhoa man. chill. im just sayin a blast beat leaves out a lot of stuff that should be there. Its not like Dave Lombardo alternated his snare and cymbal. He played the whole thing. Blast beats just lack skill.

  • @Merp5150 im pretty sure it takes skill, agility, and very acute timing to play quarter notes at over 200 bpm on a double pedal and land the snare/highhat accent perfectly. i absolutly cant stand drummers or musicians who get out here without knowing anything about this genure of music and are content to say "oh this sucks" because obviously the music is not widely accepted. every track dosnt consist of blast beats and if it did i would be very bored of this style.

  • @Merp5150 if youre a musician open your mind a bit to all styles. take an idea as simple as a blast beat and make it your own/vary it up a bit. dont just write it off.

  • @mijikle yeah, i understand where your coming from. I just think they dont sound as full.

  • @Merp5150 It depends on the blast and the drummer. if you suck with blasts and don't have a vocabulary of them... they are all going to sound the same, and feel lifeless. You should look for videos of Derek Roddy blasting but only riding quarter-note crashes on the crash... instead of riding on the ride like everyone else. Blasts can be very musical if you're smart enough/good enough to make them.

  • @ThaDeeStylee /watch?v=CQmvFxzcvM8

  • @ThaDeeStylee Yeah, man. Thats exactly what im talkin about. Everyone just uses blast beats in an amatuer way to get around a lack of talent, instead of evolving them into a new sound. I just think the way they are commonly used is stupid. But if you are a real talented drummer, than you can make a blast beat sound better than its name.

  • @Merp5150 no they don't, its actually quiet difficult to keep your hand and foot in proper time.

  • @Merp5150 I am not one to attack people, but the comment you just made has no merit. I can garauntee you would eat your words if i said blast at 220bpm, and make a seperate pattern with you'r free hand. I can see if you dont like extreme metal it is not for everyone, but shows you are an ignorant person in a way to attack a genre because you dont like it. I am not attacking u in anyway just throwing my two cents let the trolling begin..............

  • @Left3332rot I absolutely do not hate metal. I play guitar in a metalcore band right now. And i understand everyone's arguments, i just dont like blast beats. Its gettin taken a little too far.lol. Im not trying to denounce someone's way of life or anything, i just dont like them. So everyone should stop tryin to make a fight about it or say im an ignorant musician, bc believe me, if anyone knows anything about being and artist its me, ive been in it for many years. okay, im just sayin my side.

  • Mike Smith of Suffocation...

  • That was hot.

  • this is not music its bull shit!

  • @JazzNaySean Then go away and listen to some "music".

  • @JazzNaySean Okay. Thats nice. Fuck off.

  • @LostTheGaaaaaaame you know its bull shit music!

  • @JazzNaySean Umm, It isnt. What are you?

Just because you dont like it, it dosent make it bullshit.

    Youre an idiot.

  • @LostTheGaaaaaaame what im saying is how the fuck is this music?

all this is noise andd u cant tell me that if you played this at your house ur nehibors will fucken stab u in the throat

u dont even need skill this is demeaning for a real fucken musician!

    therfore bullshit

  • @JazzNaySean Ha, all music is noise, metal is just the best noise there is. It also the one that requires the most skill.

  • @tbdmwhitechapel i have to respectfully disagree there are a lot harder "genres" of music which take more independence, coordination , and musicianship imo.

  • @JazzNaySean Ughh... Ive heard this clodes minded bullshit so much, I cant be bothered to argue with another person as dumb as you. "its all noise". That is pathetic. Its all too much for you to take in. If you took the time to listen to some good heavy music, youd realise that its mostly very hard to write and play.

  • @JazzNaySean cann you doo that? perfectly no sloppyness no missed notes a smooth clean blast?? this supposit noise?

i fuckin dout it nub -peacee

  • @superGary2 you know what im gonna put up a vid of me druming

im not gonna play this bull shit and never will but i will play much harder linear beats that actually take thinking to do not just moving avery limb of your body like a fag!

  • @JazzNaySean Look at me you piece of shit.To able to blast beat you have to practice next you don't move every limb of you body doing a blast beat next if I see a video of you I'm going to hack your account eraise them and insult your ass out of youube ok you stupid ass green fuck.

  • @brake851 i guarantee you cant play a songo beat

    any latin music beat

beause u dont have the actual cordinenation you need to be a good drummer

you wont hack sick ur a faggoot

go listen to ur devil rock and go to hell!

  • @JazzNaySean Actually my Dad is a Requintista in a Trio so thats Latin and I do the Drum samples for his tracks and I'm a drummer in 2 bands so yes I can do a fuckin latin beat.Just because you don't like it it's not a piece of shit. For everything you need a talent.Because I don't like Britney Spears that doesn't means she sucks or she doen't have talent so just respect Death Metal.

  • @brake851 i would respect this but i simply cant find were the music is

itss too generic and now little kids who are begining to play drums they alwasys wanna play thiss bullshitt

thats just how i see it

and i can tell people who like this

they dont have good taste in music like YOU!

  • @LostTheGaaaaaaame If you pick up on that typo i did, then you can die.

  • Derek Roddy; the man who never blink!!!

    BLINK DAMMIT !!!

  • So, they show his feet, only one of them moving just so people can say "yeah, he;s so good"

  • the second blast witch is the traditional played backwards. i like to call that the "bathory blast" :D

  • derek roddy is none other than satan himself

  • @Madvillian01 He's pretty nice for Satan..

  • blasting shouldent take to long to get the hang of, most drummers use both feet to keep the kick drum up to speed up with the snare, i practice the dexterity of both my feat in different motions, so instead of double bass i have two bass drums

and hardcore drums are really impressive its just very fulfilling to me as an insrumentalist

  • frostch blast beats are so satisfying to play regardless of skill. lol 1 day ago

ahhh dude... if you cant play them properly then its no blast beats... im confused?

  • blast beats are so satisfying to play regardless of skill. lol

  • what about bass drum, cymbal, and snare all at the same time? does know one do that ever, or is it just not shown in this video?

  • @mawkheaf that's a bomb blast. cannibal corpse does it a lot. i'm sure he covers it, he covers it in his book so he might as well.

  • @kurtnagel So does Suffocation. They practically invented it.

  • @mawkheaf its actually a hammer blast

  • I prefer using a trigger on my kick live so i can actually hear my kick through my monitor. I don't believe it's cheating though considering that most triggers are dynamic sensitive, so if i were barely tapping my kick it would barely make a sound or not make on at all.

  • this comes with a book yes?

  • Quoted directly from Derek:

".... the kick drums are real.

    Meaning...no sound replacing, triggering, etc....

I made a choice for this DVD... to have real drums on it."

  • @the5thcolum That is really cool, because that means that he truly has some bass drum chops

  • it seems like he is barely hitting the bass drum, is he using triggers?

  • I don't think so, it sounds so real =)

  • Comment removed

  • @Livingcorpse8 yea i think he might be because the bass sounds seems to be the same and if u watch the beater it is really close to head at all times and such a loud steady bass sound would require more beater distance

  • Uhm sorry, but do you know what triggers are?

Triggers are used to get a better sound out of your drums, but you *have* to actually hit the drum, else nothing will happen.

  • @H3xxl0RxXx Obviously u have to hit the drum, its not going to hit iself, but triggers also allow you to cheat because you could be barely tapping the bass drum and the make the same sound every time. THey are not used to get a better sound but for consistency. A trigger allows drummers to play at a constant pace, regardless of the physical force used. Dont post a comment unless you know what you are talking bout... However, im pretty sure Dereck doesnt do that cuz he's a freaking beast.

  • I'm not a specialist, but as far as I know triggers just equalize certain frequences. I know people mainly use them when their drums get miced by PA in clubs where they don't have that headroom, so it does matter what you do and doesn't play the same sound all the time, but that could also be possible, why not?

    But I don't think that's what they're made for.

  • Its not cheating even if its tapping. Dont you think its hard to hit that hard in those high speeds? No one can hear you elsewise.

  • @ArterialX It is hard hitting hard at high speeds because its all ankle, but i know that a drummer like dereck could easely do it, if you look up george kollias, he has a video on triggers and he states that some drummers use them for "cheating" and that he is all about beater motion... (btw: Im not nearly as close to such speeds, im not a big double bass drummer, however, i do admire this type of drumming)

  • Hey Derek, If you happen to read this, is there a reason why your toms are arranged like that? I've never seen it before and I was wondering what the effect is that your aiming for. Awesome drumming keep it metal

    Cheers.

    B.

  • If I may answer, he hangs 'em like that because that is his personal preference, he likes to have his deepest rack tom if you wil in the middle because he often starts his rolls with that tom so he hangs it in the middle for comfort.

  • @HeavyMetalen666 : I saw an interview where he explained the arrangement. He does this not only because he starts off the rolls that way but so that he gets used to the ambdexirity of the setup while practicing.

  • i tried the demon drive and the axis pedal and like the demon drive more probably as im used to the pearl pedals they feel more natural to me

  • is that pedal a demon drive?

  • axis, they sponser him

  • @SystematicChaos08 axis, demon drive suck

  • FYI the Demon drive is a damn good pedal, i own both the demon drive and the axis longboard and both are very good.

  • im sure they are better when they are set up in longboards, but i prefer axis because they have less stuff that gets in the way, i think pearl tried to make the pedal look too fancy, more looks than function IMO

  • we want more!!!!!!!!!!!lol

  • looks very nice.. I'll buy it soon. :)

  • who cares DR's DVD is almost like GK's DVD. both are my drum god and inspiration. i WILL buy their DVD's even i already have DR's The Evolution of Blasbeats Book.

    hail the drumkit! (George's quot)

  • this is porn for my drums-needed mind

  • blasting is so fun damn

  • derek roddy man great job....watching your videos is just a pleasure.....thanks for the cool videos man......cheers

    jake

  • Derek roddy is on f my influences for blasting, Got his book, Time to get this dvd now. Derek roddy is Brual shit

  • no he's a beast a FUCKIN MONSTER @ DRUMS DOESNT EVEN SWEAT

  • is derek roddy canadian??

  • I thought he was from Tennessee, but I could be wrong.

  • maybe.... i was just asking cause he bobbles his head a lot when he talks..

  • @neilpeart311 its Charlston, South Carolina

  • i actually think this dvd will help me even though I hate metal.

  • It should....

It's a documentation of the history of Blast Beats...much like my book..."The Evolution of Blast Beats"....only you can watch it now! Haha.

Lots of performances, and demonstrations of each blast beat type.

It also has the exercises and blast examples from my original instructional video I released back in 2000.

Should help understand the purpose of "blasting" a little better.

    Cheers,

    D.

  • Gah! Derek Roddy! Didn't know you'd be reading these comments. I'm a huge fan man, didn't mean to offend. I was not referring to the content so much as the camera angles and stuff (like how you talk into the camera located behind your toms, and then demonstrate afterwards). The similarity just struck me as I watched it. I didn't mean it as "GK is better than DR" or anything like that. I'm absolutely buying this dvd also btw.

    Cheers man!

  • Haha...well, that's ANY DVD brother....

whether it's mine, Georges, Dave Weckls, Carlock, etc... Only so many angles options around a drum kit. Haha.

All good man. Hope you'll enjoy it.

    Cheers

    D.

  • This is almost exactly like George Kollias's dvd... only GK did it 2 years earlier.
