Sweep picking is something they neither invented or are exclusive in. It is a common technique in both metal and jazz. Not quite sure who invented it, but I've never seen anybody do it earlier than Django. He wouldn't have played these particular 5 to 6 strings arpeggio's though, because they are not convenient when you only have 2 fingers for melody playing ;)

@MemeNatorius True, a lot of guitarist can do this kind of lick... On ibanez/schecter electric guitars where the strings are right up against the fretboard and the action is perfect, etc. Much less can do it on acoustic guitar, which makes it so much cooler when it's done. :) God bless.

John Mayer plays a lot of styles aswell but it's not a reason to say he's the best . It's like saying , oh this girl is the most beautiful girl in the world . You can't because first , it depends on the persons and second because there are a lot of different kind of beautys . Once again I really love tommy emmanuel , but he's not the best player in the world . The " best player " doesn't exist and never will .

But anyway , the speed is not the most important thing , the melody and the feeling is much more important and tommy is one of biggest king for that !

I don't necessarily think I quite buy into the "only two guitarists in the world..." thing. Eric Johnson is heavily into acoustic and I seriously doubt there's anything he cannot do. Fairly certain that Ewan Dobson could execute some wicked sweep picking, if he were so inclined (there are videos of him doing stuff like this). Fun discussion, great vid.
