Its 59 because your skipping the first split. It takes 1 hr(60 min) for 1 to split an fill it up.... so if you start at 2 you skip the first split thus only taking 59 mins. hope that makes sense.

You have no idea... I got my graphing calculator and pulled out my geometric formula. Turns out that it wasn't needed.

@RoseFrench if 1 germ turns into 2 in the first minute. its basically 60 - 1 = 59. Since in the 2nd minute u have 2 germs.

You have to find the minutes in this one. Each germ splits into two. One (1) germ will fill up the whole jar in one hour, which is sixty (60) minutes. Starting out with two (2) saves you one (1) minutes, so the answer is fifty nine (59).
