I read a recent article that went into the captured IJN/IJA planes that were brought back to the home islands after the phillipine and maylasian campaigns, they included 3 b-17s a p-40c a buffalo and some p-39s
I believe the IJN had captured some of the Allied Forces' planes, including B17. In "Samurai!", which was written by one of the ace pilots among the IJN, Sir. Saburo Sakai noted the difficulty of shooting down B17s. When they studied the captured B17, they were astounded as to how much armor plating was used, as well as self-sealing fuel tanks. The U.S valued their pilots' lives, whereas IJN didn't.
If you haven't read "Samurai!", I highly recommend it.
I kno there is a DVD of this film, or has been re-issued recently, I have seen some other clips from it, and the air to air cinematography is amazing, and crisp too, Who ever was their director of photography was a genius in composing Hope they load other clipthe shots.
Was this some kind of studio compilation movie? I ask because I cant' think of a place where Ki. 43s would have encountered U.S. Army P-40s and British Brewsters. Are those Chinese P-40s? If so, that could be film from Burma, conceivably. How likely I don't know. Painted frames? I'd love to hear from a Japanese military historian.
This is a movie produced, I believe, in 1942 There was a famous army fighter pilot called Tateo Katoh who did not come back from a mission flight to the Bay of Bengal, and this film is about him.
I saw this film when I was a boy of ten or 11 years old in Tokyo (after this, I evacuated to Nagano Prec.) The name of the actor who played the role of Katoh was Susume Fujita.
The music you can hear towards the end of clip is Katoh Hayabusa Sentoutai, the name of the film.
Trust this was made during the Pacific War, kind of typical propaganda film. Yet, do not know how at that time, they could use or film allied aircraft. Presumably they had used captured ones.
hey, does anyone know where i can source a full version of this film? I need to base some research on it for my university dissertation. Any help you can give me would be gratefully rec'd. :)
Everyone said, "We wants 20mm". B-24 was hard. However,Hayabusa`s bulletproof was reliance". In the book on Mr.Iwamoto that fights in the Pacific Ocean "B-24 was burned, firing by Zero`s 20mm that had been approached.
Hayabusa is sucks! It had only two 0.3 guns, then one 0.5 and one 0.3, and finally two 0.5. It's quite few, Also it hadn't any armor and not protected fuel tank. An Americans aircrafts had four 0.5 аt least. That made Japans pilots life short - it's enough just a few hits and plane is flying flame. It's common for all Japan WW2 aircrafts, except Ki61
