Ok being new top pipes of course I wetn out and bought tobaccos that smelled really good and sweet and they all well just taste like hot tobacco...lol is it true some of the best tasting baccis smell like shit? Is this a phenomenon? What are your suggestions for the best most flavorful tobaccos? I dont care what it costs I want it to taste good, really good...
@cutlerylover with pipe tobacco you seem to either get a great smell or a great taste, but not both. Try Billy Budd from Cornell and Diehl for a great taste
@cutlerylover Depends on what your palate is like. I myself only enjoy aromatics. I love the sweet sugary flavour of Virginias paired with the nutty taste of Burley and finished off with a good sweet top dressing. I have no affection for Lady Latakia. For me that leaf is way too bitter, but some absolutely love it. No matter what style it's better to go with a well established blender like C&D, Mac Baren, Peterson, McClelland, Dunhill etc. Better quality leaf in the blends.
I'm with you on your opinion of aromatics. It bugs me when I read others suggesting to new pipe smokers that aromatics are a good place to start. I have yet to smoke the same aromatic twice. If I don't wind up hating the blend, it simply does nothing for me.
@jesusFC84, I stared with aromatics about 8 months ago. The first two tobaccos I bought were the Macbaren vanilla cream, and the chocolate and honey. The chocolate actually smells like chocolate when you open the tin. It burns cooler than the vanilla. The vanilla cream smells sweeter than the chocolate but burns a bit hotter and you could get tong bite if you are not careful. I recommend both. Consider Tinderbox house blends like the Wilshire which smokes cooler than the others I mention, and
Next time you get a tobacco that you absolutely cannot stand feel free to send it out my way lol. I'm just a poor college student trying to maintain the hobby while working 40 hours a week and going to school full time. (Is my sad story persuading you?) lol
That said, as a beginner, what would you recommend in the ways of Tobacco? I was actually thinking of the aromatics, but I don't want my first pipe experience to suck. What would you suggest for a newbie in terms of tobacco?
Hey man, maybe you've already got a video explaining this (and if so, maybe direct me to it), but what are the best methods of preserving tobacco if you don't have a fancy humidor?
@DJEDI296 I like using canning jars. I smoke a lot of peterson's and the tins just dont keep it fresh enough for me. The canning jars make a great seal, last for ever, and you can peal labels off and put them on the top or write it in marker to keep track of you have many blends.
I have to say, I'm about to quit the aromatics, too. They smell great, but each time I smoke one, it's just not a pleasurable or satisfying smoke. English blends are just cleaner and more pleasant to smoke, since they don't burn your mouth, haha.
No Mark I ordered 4 ounces of Squadron Leader. I am glad you mentioned bulk. so I asked and it was much cheaper. I am hooked on this stuff.I need a 12 step program. Cheers mate
Once I moved away from aromatics, I can't go back. Though, I do like Samuel Gawith flavorings in 1792 Flake, Kendal Flake, Bracken Flake etc. Most tobaccos have flavoring (toppings) added. I just need to taste the tobacco coming through the topping at least. I smoke a lot of Erinmore Flake from Murrey Sons & Co., but when my supply of this runs out, I'm out of luck. Orlik took over the production of Erinmore and pales in comparison.
wt a waste,,abt 60% of romatic to my experince hv the same out come,,but once u find a good one like macbaren vanilla creame u hold on to it to be ur social blend for ppl impression
yeah ive about had it with aeromitics myself none of them can do what a billy bud northwoods or wesminster do for me so i dont even try i stick to what i know i like best and will always enjoy
Perhaps you should explore the world of Mac Baren. Some of their stuff comes in bulk, and even their regular tins are 100 grams instead of the more common 50g.
I have to agree. Bulk aromatics are a real waste of time. More often than not these are local tobacco retailers who buy the same bulk Altadis or Lane blending stock and then flavor it, put it in a bag, and come up with a name. You are essentially smoking the same cheap underlying tobacco every time. By excluding tins from your repertoire you are really limiting yourself. Some great names like Robert McConnell, Freybourg & Treyer, Petersons, Davidoff, Dunhill (rumored return?) only come in tins.
I hope if you visit San Diego that you might sample a blend called My Coffee from Racine and Laramie. It's not aromatic (at least, I didn't think so) with a slight unsweetened chocolate taste to go along with the coffee and latakia flavors. I don't smoke aromatics at all. This was a light blend more suitable for mornings, I felt. Anyway, sorry you did not enjoy that coffee blend!
Your pop-up caption describing that aromatic selection tops it all. Bulk aromatics are like dime store socks in bunches of ten pairs for $ 5. A waste of hard-earned guilder.
Please don't put any more of them in that exceptionally great-looking Bjarne! It just breaks my purist's heart.
I've had better luck with samplers; the only sampler I've tried was one of Pipesandcigars', which featured Butternut Burley, Trout Stream, Annikake and one more which I forgot the name of. Of the four, I really enjoy all but the Annikake, and even that is still better than some of the stuff out there.
To be perfectly honest...I feel that these "flavored" tobaccos are hardly worth the effort...I only say this for the simple reason that after many years as a pipe smoker, and many many of these aromatics...well the best I have found have left me nonplussed...and more than one have left me feeling as though I had dined on month old sashimi....
Plan A...an electronica group...I thought you would enjoy their music....The Earth's Dilemma is their debut album....recently released......Plan A is a wonderful experiment in modern music
it's comparable to the burnt coffee at wafflehouse at 4:27 in the morning after drinking with teenagers in excess on an empty stomach, the room note is that of a burning shoe and the overall rating is horrible at best.
Mmmm...by 4:28 in a morning of drinking in excess with teen agers, on an empty stomach, my taste buds are usually back in the toilet, so I probably couldn't tell.
But the IDEA of Coffe Mate at Wafflehouse is ghoulish enough.

A really good tobacco with a coffee topping is Butera Pelican. It's an English blend which has a very mild coffee topping. It's one of my favorites.
