ok im 13 and i dont know if it will happen, and how is this suipost to be good? iv only bin in like 3 but they wer like 3.2 an di slept threw it but the one i was awake i berlly felt it, im ont readyy!!!!!!!
I question whether the building codes spared the Chileans. I think fight2Bfree is right about the epicenter being further away than the one in Porta Prince. Besides, the U.N. building in Porta Prince was built to earthquake standards, and it collapsed, killing dozens of U.N. workers.
jmorris, you are wise to question whether this is the End Times, as many didn't get the time era right. If mother nature keeps pounding the planet, I guess we'll know for sure - take a last good vacation.
The fact of the matter is that we don't know when or where the next "big one" will be. CBS needs to stop these scare tactics. As a former Californian, I am used to earthquakes, but small ones occur in California each day, but I didn't feel them. Obviously we do need to be prepared, but we don't need to be micro managing when the "big one" might come.
okay, so lets review. they thought the world was going to end during medieval times when the bubonic plague hit. they thought the world was going to end in 1900. they thought the world was going to end during ww1, the great depression, ww2, and year 2000. now we think the world is going to end because of some dudes rantings in the 1500's, and because a barbaric civilization calender ends? c'mon world! the worlds going to end by human hands, not natural disaster!
I'm tired of hearing these "experts" talk about how the quake in Chile was 500 times greater than the one in Haiti and how the building codes are what made the difference.... this is total BS. If a quake 500time greater than the one in Haiti hits you, I dont care what building codes you have, you will be buried under concrete. The main reason for the reduced damage is the epicenter was far away.
yep indeed, it was about 70-80 miles away.. that's pretty far. so in actuality it might have been much lower, if they want to make a direct comparison with Haiti.
It is not about which country is the next to be strike, it is how responsive each responsive and how infrastructure prepared each region. It is about instrument technology, emergence planning and resource backup.
How about some shock trigger inflating technology like air bag for structures and fly over bridges and roads so to slow down and soften impact of building falling down?
more activity i suppose but the number of major quakes have been fewer and follows that trend. like the anchor said we just know about more of the quakes happening around the world now because not only of the instruments that are being used to detect and record them. but also because of better information technology. it just seems like an increased amount of seismic activity.
