  • This is my favorite Arrangement of Ave Maria. I'm in highschool Choir myself, and going to be a senior next year, and I know the difficulties of getting students to do the exact same thing at the exact same time. This is one of the better Ones I've heard after watching others. Music genius isn't nice. :/ I liked it.

  • watch the girls. they start speeding up the tempo. it is kind of insulting to sing a latin song and mispronounce the words so badly.

if you work on it a bit more then this group has potential?

  • This is a piece that possesses some serious challenges for young choirs. My choir chose to perform this piece and so I fully realize this. This may not be the world's best recording, but for a choir of this age group, this is a wonderful recording, regardless of the fact that the quality of the recording may be less than ideal. So to the choir members: Fantastic job! To Music"genius": chill out. A tip from good ol' southern hospitality: if you haven't anything nice to say, keep your mouth closed

  • The arrangement was inspired and drawn by the idea of plainchant, but the way the conductor conducts it here rushes the melody and does not allow it to float the way it should. There is a lack of flow and majesty. Especially in the downward resolutions of the wonderful dominant tension moment in the first two repeats. The second tenor solo was fantastic though. The ending was waaaaaaaaaaaaay too fast. There was no savoring all the wonderful moving and resolving harmonies!

  • i love this arrangement.. I sang his song in high school as well, it was my favorite. so very beautiful, I was so happy to find Biebl's arrangement after only a few minutes of searching. nicely done, I bet their director was someone great.. to get those kids to sound that good. I know mine was.

  • sounds very nice :0 it was a little fast and somewhat marcato instead of legato, and the higher chorus or overpowering the second chorus. It is a pretty sound, just a little too much. over good job, but Sopranos and altos hold back! You will be heard no matter what :).

  • wo im in band playing this song ..but wow yall r really good :)

  • Hey, thanks for uploading this. I'm Kevin from Tigard HS, Freshman. Heard about this from our director Mrs. Hale. I hope I can get the opportunity to sing this song sometime. Sounds great though, naturally, the womens' section has much more power.

  • My choir sang this just about two weeks ago. We sang in it the school auditorium, but we will also be performing it in one of Denver's Cathedrals and in England this year. You all sound like you know what you are talking about, so you should listen to it and comment what you think! Thanks!

Just search: Ave Maria Chaparral High School

  • I love performing at grotto, I was in the Newberg high school choir and we sang there every year around christmas

  • There's a lot of flutter in the upper voices, which I personally don't think is appropriate for this piece. Also starts to sag drastically at about the 2:20-2:30 mark; chords at the end of the phrases just don't ever seem to lock. I've got to disagree with crna2dlt-- I think if age is an excuse, the group doesn't need to perform the work. Constructive criticism =) That being said, this piece isn't exactly known for being easy, and overall a decent performance.

  • Musicgenius0011-keep in mind these are HS students and while their performance of this piece isn't perfect, I have yet to hear one that is. Factor in nerves to the mix and that can get the best of anyone, not to mention a 16, 17 year old. Every performance is open to interpretation and a triplet for you is not the same as it is to me. Give them the benefit of the doubt and more important an apology because once this piece gelled, it is downright impressive.

  • Bass soloist starts off horrible. Not good at all. Bad Latin annunciation, terrible vowel shape, and completely off key and pitch. I suggest a more slowed down soloist who gets the fact of dynamic control and maturity in sound. Tenor soloist is the same. This song is not a hip hop song. Take that out of the solo. Its not about showing off. Grow up. Second solo shows drastic maturity.

  • Constructive criticism is always welcome, but condescension only negates whatever helpful input you might have shared.

These students (now all graduated), were neither guilty of "showing off" nor confusing this song -- which is the choir's signature piece -- with "hip hop."

Nor did they need you to come along and tell them to "Grow up." I can assure you, this was their strictest public performance of the year, and they took it very seriously.

  • @NorthwestProfiles too right. Lay off "musicgenius" , it's not like they were up there break dancing or anything so why say "grow up"? This was a difficult song to learn in Jr high and am sure it wasn't much easier for HS kids to learn either. These kids arent in a school like Juliard where all they do is study music, they are in a school where they have to take all the other subjects and get passing marks. GET OFF YOUR FAKE HIGH HORSE

  • again. doucher.

  • reffering to MUSICGENIUS0011. theyre kids. its a hard song. genius' know this.

  • @MUSICGENIUS0011 - The deep insight you have into music is shown clearly here in your sharp criticism and harsh judgment of . . . HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. Give me a break.

  • @MUSICGENIUS0011 this song is extraordinarily difficult. my choir sang this at our winter concert, and we had just as much trouble with the solos and trying to keep sopranos in line. yes there are things i could list that this choir could do better on, but the way you went about this was plain rude. but they attempted this song, and i give them kudos for that. they could have done MUCH worse.

  • I personally think that overall the song should've been a tiny bit slower; the ending was completely way too fast, in my opinion. Also, more cresc. in the ending.

Anyways, I agree with Profriend but, I don't think high schools need top of the art doctorates that need to teach the teenagers (including myself). Any young professional can teach teenagers music and how to perform it. Most of it is talent, yes, but also a lot of it is just obeying. :3

  • Profriend agreed...naturally girls have it a little easier vocally at the highschool and even post highschool level, they sounded A LOT better than the guys section's too.....I have heard WAY better at the high school level for this piece...tough piece.

  • Jeez dont be so critical. They sound good. Its a video - meant for entertainment purposes. Not for you wanna be judges to critique everything.

  • I have done this piece before the chants are to choppy! The women are to echo back not knock the guys down!

  • The Director should have better control over the dynamics, there are a lot of pianisimo's throughout the piece.

  • wow...good, HS indeed. looots of alto's and soprano's but they're nearly flawless! yay for my fellow 1st alto's! :D

  • No dynamic control, completely the directors fault, and none of the solos have 16th notes, which is what they all did... and college choirs are so much better than high school ones... there really isn't much of a comparison.

  • I agree. however the guys are fantastic in this choir(not the soloists as much, they just dont have the voice for it, not their fault). although this isn't by any means the standard for any highschool choir, there are so many better out there(the one im in for example)

  • I'd like to see you try to direct a choir of 100 plus teenagers. Don't knock it until you try it.

In comparison to other high schools, Tualatin HS is one of the best in Oregon.

  • WOW!

  • I think the conductor could have done a better job at reigning in the dynamics on this one. Choral singers are notorious for going FULL-BORE with dynamics because they're so excited to be singing, yet don't leave themselves anywhere to go if they really want to go fortissimo!

  • Very mediocre. Poor qualtiy of solos. The tuning was bad.

  • Tualatin HS is up there with some of the best choirs in the state. Doesn't sound very mediocre to me.

  • That doesn't say much about the quality of Oregon HS choirs. Most of the commentors here are comparing it with the way the piece was INTENDED to be performed. As a former professional choirister, I have to agree with those who say it could have been done much better - even by a high school choir (which in general are not noted for world-class performances.) Public schools can't afford top-notch choral directors, and can't be terribly selective about the voices they include. It is what it is.

  • it's waaaay too fast

  • The sopranos are way out of control.....very sloppy! They are out of balance with the boys, who sound better than the girls in this number. Still...much better than your typical high school choir, that's for sure. But this could have been MUCH better.

  • i agree.... when your all together and not belting it as a whole its not horrible....the solos couldve been better.... thats how i'll word that

  • It' the director's responsiblity to keep the choir balanced. The girls are certainly overpowering the boys and and it ruins the blend.

  • Comment removed

  • i cant belive this is a HS choral work...OMG its so heavenly and angelic...nyz it makes me happy inside

  • nice job!my choir's doing this song too =]

  • Bravo, very well done - for a HS choir

  • im in a high school choir right now... probably the best in chicago if not illinois... so i can say right now a high school choir can do a lot better than this

  • Once you get to college, you'll discover that everyone came from the best choir in their state... yet they all came from the state... not sure how that works :D

  • Glencoe did it better!

  • Visit the Chorus CSD in Youtube!!!

  • i just sang this last night in the Metropolitan State College of Denver Choir. its SUCH an amazing song. i sang the tenor one part which is amazing.

  • I agree, go 1st tenor!

  • this is an amazing high school ensemble. my only quip is that I'd like to hear much purer vowel sounds (ah and oo in particular). All in all, choir better than most i've heard do this.

  • I agree about the vowel sounds. They would blend a lot better. Almost all American choirs could use some degree of work on this. But for a high school choir, with limited training and rehearsal time, it's an excellent performance.

  • dough-mee-noose TAY-coom. It kills me every time.

  • P.S. Do you guys happen to be going to the Bahamas in April for a competition being held on a Carnival cruise ship? If so well, we will be there!=)

  • I love this song it's SO pretty. I'm in the madgrigals at my school and we did this exact same version. We are a pretty kickbutt choir lol!

  • maybe the baritone can work on his tone a bit. hes a good singer but i dont think he took a big enough breathe to support his sound.

  • Hey guys im in this chior and was wondering of you guys had any tips for the grotto coming up in a few weeks.

  • The tenor soloist has some minor tuning issues but, lovely instrument. The tempo is ghastly is the conductor is trying to achieve emotion by slowing the tempo? work on the dynamics! The choir goes from loud to louder. Finally, the sopranos especially should work on their "straight tone" the width of the vibrato sometimes makes it difficult to identify the center of the pitch.

    Overall, however, a decent performance

  • The quality of YouTube doesn't even come close to doing this justice. Every time I hear this choir perform it, I can barely breathe!

  • Ohhh my god.

    There's so many of them!

    Beautiful, beautiful.

    :)

  • thank you (=

  • what arrangment is this?

    its beautiful!

by the way, i was in jamestown with this choir. (=

  • It's the Franz Biebl arrangement. Thanks for the kind word!

  • Thanks for posting this. I graduated in '98, and this brought back a lot of memories! :)

    It sounded great!
