I'm pretty sure he was petrified to fall into a state of financial disaster seeing how badly his parents had it. I've been a Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fan since the beginning. In the early 80s, I saw them at a gig where everyone was present (except Carl). Love was making fun of Brian, and I sat there seething. So Yeah, he took things a little too far with the suing, but not wanting to do a "Brian Wilson solo project featuring the Beach Boys" rather than the usual Beach Boys doesn't make him a dick, it just means he wants to keep his fans. If you were involved in something that grand that you loved, you'd actually want to be a part of it too. Remember, Brian insisted on using studio musicians, which in my opinion wasn't cool to do. Bottom line, his concerns are fair and legitimate, he just overreacted.

Most of you are blowing this way out of proportion. Mike wrote quite a lot of lyrics and a ton of vocal melodies too. I'm pretty sure he was petrified to fall into a state of financial disaster seeing how badly his parents had it. After Brian's father refused to credit Mike on any of his vast work (therefore stripping him of his rightful royaltys), the only way he could get it back was to go to court, which Brian himself understood.

Sometimes greatness gets sidetracked- why not hate the longterm effect that Brian's drug use had on him as much as you hate Mike Love? And although the 1967 recordings deserved to be released to a wider public (with all their goofy humour intact as well) hasn't the Smile story and its resurrection created a lasting legend for Brian Wilson that will ultimately be of benefit to him in the story of musical history just as other legends have accompanied some painters?

Anna Lee The Healer from the Friends album, for example, is one of my favourite Beach Boys songs and Mike Love's name is as co-writer. Pet Sounds didn't sell that much in America when it was released and it seems to me that people are falling over themselves to re-write history and proclaim that everybody but Mike Love realised at the time that Brian Wilson was going in a worthwhile musical direction.

The first time I heard Smile I also thought that it was average at best- it takes time to digest, and time is something that they may not have had the luxury of in 1967. I've been a Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fan since the beginning. In the early 80s, I saw them at a gig where everyone was present (except Carl). Love was making fun of Brian, and I sat there seething. Bruce Johnston actually walked over to me mid-song and asked if I was upset. I told him how I felt about Love "goofing" on Brian and he tried to rationalize it. I thought it was cool that Bruce came over to me, but Mike Love was (and remains) a piece of shit.
