  • YES.MUS

  • Sounds like Master of Puppets.

  • @sidwerd1hater i thought it was no remorse to be honest

  • If you run to the entrance of the zig-zag room and back to the room behind the imp platform, there will be a lowered part of the wall. Last secret there, in case you didn't know.

  • What means '''OPL''?

  • @spidermastermind100 FM Operator Type-L. FM (frequency modulation) is basically spoken a type of creating sounds. Yamaha started with the famous (and awesome) DX Keyboards in 1983 (sorry if these facts are wrong, just recalling my memories). It's digital (there were analog synths before) and this gives it very distinctive sounds compared to analog ones plus you can change incredibly many parameters. What the "Type L" stands for only knows Yamaha^^

  • i like to call this map 'the start of it all' for the game i mean

  • It's... OK... but it sounds dreafully detuned in the percussion department, very distracting actually (0:26 & 0:45 & 1:10 & 1:27) , and actually, perhaps even a little inferior to DOSBox's emulator, but that's not saying much.

Just run it through a real chip FM next time. lol, it's probably easier than using work-arounds with a pile of emulators.

But I agree, it's better than the standard microsoft MIDI synthesizer which so many over-abuse.

  • @raymangold22 I do not have the soundblaster available - it's 480 km away, and I can't take it with the whole computer, and the good old K6-2 350 with the ESS-Solo onbard died and - sucks! - was sold. To the autencity, I really don't hear "very" distracted things. The percussion is truly never emulated correctly, neither GZDooMs, Chocolate DooMs nor DOSBOX does, it's always weird. But I ran so many tools and emulators, and except for the perc., everything seem fine and authentic to me.

  • I hope you're referring to OPL3 and not OPL1. I never used OPL1 before.

  • @raymangold22 OPL2 ;) YM3812.

  • @raymangold22 If you have any possibility to run it on a real FM chip in the near future, I'd like to listen how it sounds.

  • @NoMac90 Yeah I'll do a recording for you bud, it sounds totally different (I just compared the two). For one the percussion IS tuned perfectly fine (your version the percussion is WAAAAY off, and detuned; wrong waveform emulation or something...).

And I just realized no one did any recordings on DOOM with a real FM chip... weird. May as well do all of the tracks then.

  • @NoMac90 I got the SoundBlaster version of the music running on my Windows 98 machine and it sounds just like this.

  • This sounds the closest to the way it did back on my Windows 3.1 machine.

  • Wait, is this recorded from an actual FM-based card? If so, which one is it?

Back in the day I was lucky enough to have a pretty accurate SB clone (Aztech Sound Galaxy 16) so I pretty much got the full SB16 experience.

  • Not everyone in the DOS-days used the OPL synths to render the audio..

My DOS computer has an SB16 with a General MIDI daughtercard

that makes it sound pretty much like those 'high quality doom' sounds.

It just depended on what your budget was in 1993-94.

  • @westygw Noone's contradicting that :D

Maybe my dad just knew what his priorities are. I don't think any casual computer back then bought any more than it, it offered MIDI (OPL) and digital sound output, and don't tell me a normal user would want more, I mean, back in 1994 were really other things important. We a lot of DM back then for our PC, and I am so glad my dad did that :) In 1999, we bought our insanely expensive Creative with speakers and stuff - waste of money for real.

  • @NoMac90 I like how there are complete words missing! WTF! "any casual computer USER back then"... / "We PAID a lot of DM back then"... / "expensive speakers BY THEM

  • @NoMac90

OPL isn't MIDI, and DooM offered quite a few sound output options.

Back in 1994 I used the same GM Card as I do today, so its not like it was terribly expensive. It was like buying a nice graphics card today.

  • @westygw EXACTLY I had two GM cards in 1995 and I was a poor school kid. They were not that expensive if you looked. And both of mine were as good as an AWE32 but 2-3 times as less. The ultrasound Ace was a daughterboard for only £80 with the same sounds as the Gravis Ultrasound.

  • @ojideagu This is fine for you both, and as already said, noone's contradicting that. If you didn't used to have an OPL or grown to the OPL sound, I wonder what you're doing here..

  • @NoMac90 I had OPL for the first year I had my PC in 1994. It was too crap for my ears so I upgraded with my birthday money. Doom FM synthesis is nostalgic though and the only OPL sound that I remember as quite cool.

  • @ojideagu Okay then. It's everyone's opinion I guess. I am just a big fan of the Yamaha DX7, the YM2612 (Sega Genesis/MegaDrive) and the OPL -- Overall FM synthesis.

  • @NoMac90 Yeh no prob. The Megadrive did have some cool FM music like Road Rash and Moonwalker. Doom FM is a classic sound though I still remember it. Also Tyrian for Dos sounds good with OPL/FM sound.

  • @NoMac90 However if you want to hear some really BAD Fm synth, listen to the 32X version of doom! OMG it is horrific.

  • @ojideagu 32x's "music" is pretty much fucked up xD I don't know if I shouldto cry or to laugh. It isn't even real "music". Just some random noises - mostly "farts". It's a shame for my favourite chip, the YM2612 which is built in there. The Qsound - the 32x sound ehnancement - was poorly documentated that the majority of the developers used only the 2612 on a very, very poor way. If you think about "HAVOC", "KID CHAMELEON", "SONIC 1/2/3" using the same chip you see there is no comparision.

  • @NoMac90 I had TWO Midi soundcards in 1995, They were not THAT expensive I had an ultrasound ace which was only about £80 and Sound FX classic 300. All sounded as good as the Awe 32.

  • This is proof that OPL2 *the one Skulltag/Dosbox emulates* sounds superior to that of OPL3, atleast in my opinion that is. :)

  • @sonicfan966 Don't like the OPL3 too much. But both should sound exact the same, because DooM uses it's own "instrument file". I have it here, it's an *.OP2 file. You can "feed" the OPL3 to sound like that if I'm not completely wrong.

  • @NoMac90 Ah. I forgot about the instrument files, maybe I should find one that sounds like doom's and use it for my midi player on dosbox, cause the one it uses now makes guitars sound like random shuffling noises.

  • @NoMac90 I have the *.OP2-File used by DooM (II) and Wolfenstein. It really works, because I have a tool which can read this file (a music creator for IMF music, IMF is the format Wolfenstein uses, just like MUS used by DooM). I send you a PM in some hours :)

  • the original song!

  • this sounds like it did back in the day.

    Nice job!

  • @jws50
