This is how a race track should be. Watkins Glen, the Old Hockenheim etc. Long, fast corners, and very fast straights are the way circuits should be built.
love this place. this place is like spa-francorchamps and silverstone. the glen has those incredibly fast esses, the carousel, and the boot, yet you can still pass in turn 1, the bus stop, and possibly through the toe. and, thanks to the chicane, this place is actually better now than before, since there's another good passing zone. beats the hell out of bahrain/abu dhabi and the tilke circuits.
If only I was a billionaire. I'd buy this circuit, build a mega pit building to accomodate today's F1 and have a rocking race that would beat the hell out of those stupid Herman Tilke circuits.
I wish F1 would come back here, but it's not close to a major population center, and there's no oil money. Indianapolis was a good idea but the track is dumb, and Tony George is a moron. Laguna Seca would be cool to but it's too short I think.
yea laguna seca would never get a GP.. too narrow and no overtaking opportunities by todays standards. same goes for infineon raceway, which is also a fantastic track. i'd like to see F1 return to long beach. i mean they race the indy cars there still and it gets a great reception so why not?
@Threadoflength Yes very true! Long Beach would be neat. I was just thinking that Miller Motorsports Park or Road America would be neat too if they were fixed up of course.
@Albinobluenardz I'm sorry, but the Miller Motorsports Park is a horrible track. It has no character what so ever, just like every other new track. Road America would be nice, but that needs investment. The whole pit area & paddock needs to be entirely re-built and it needs improvements to the run-offs and other safety measures. The Glen would be good too.
@thestaggie Yes I agree. Miller is boring. The only thing going for it is the length but no elevation changes and a crappy layout ruin it. If F1 were to return, I just don't want to see them on a street course since the history of those in the US is not very bright.
@Threadoflength Laguna Seca has no overtaking oppurtunities. That sounds like every other multi-hundred million dollar piece of garbage Hermann Tilke pumps out every second year. I'm not a big fan of it but Laguna at least has character. Maybe with some investment in the pit complex and improving safety features by extending the run-offs, the FIA might have a look at it. It has a better shot than Long Beach in my opinion.
Gotta love the brilliance of F1 safety. Cevert dies because the armco skewered him, so instead of fixing the armco, they add a chicance that what, slows the cars down by 20 mp/h? And then Helmuth Koinning pays the price for it.
Amazing driving here, I didn't realize just how fast they were able to go through the corners back then, if you compare it to a GT car race nowadays, their lap times are considerably higher.
Cevert was killed at the top of the esses @0:40; Helmut Koinigg was killed heading into turn 7 (the toe of the boot) @1:21... In both cases the Armco barriers failed to do what they were supposed to do: contain the car in event of an accident.
Just a little bit of info that might be of interest to some of you. When Didier died in 87 racing a powerboat, his girlfriend/wife was pregnant with his twins. When they were born they were named Didier and Gilles. Nice way of remembering the good times.
look at the violent steering at the end of the back straight trying to make the outer loop and the esses!..well over 200 kph!
big balls!
that big bend had francois cevert for breakfast few years earlier.

No, he was still at Tyrell in 78. He signed for Ligier in 80. Depailler and Laffite were drivers in 79 racing the JS11.
