  • this is also known as the long roll

  • sounds like the beginning to one by swedish house mafia

  • I have finally learnt to do this!

Keep the faith and practice practice practice, you'll get there!

  • i feel like cheating when i bounce the stik

  • @Jhfgjdf when you go slow don't bounce the sticks but as you go faster its needed so don't feel like you're cheating when you bounce the stick unless your taking it super slow

  • Try as I may, I cannot do that.:(

  • I LOVE your drumsticks.

And no, you don't have to bounce.

  • drummer practicing.... MACHINE GUN! ... drummer practicing

  • eew your drumsticks are creepy. theyre just nubs

  • he need to work on his doubles....

  • If u go much faster, you HAVE to use bounce right? Or else it might be impossible o.O

  • very nice and clean, but too much arm movement. USE YOUR WRISTS

  • wow how do you move from this on the pad to on the snare (like, drumkit snare)?

also, you HAVE to bounce the double stroke at higher speeds right?

  • what's the name of the pad he use?

  • 0:25 for transition from double stroke roll to buzz roll

  • This is my favorite one.

  • Should you bounce double stroke rolls

  • @ipoddish you should use bounce so that u r pushing the sticks down only... if u just do a "buzz" u are not practicing doubles... which wouldnt make u faster.... so yeh use bounce but make sure ur doing so movements with ur wrist.. not just lettin the stick bounce :D

  • I dont know why, this is my favorite (of the few I know xD) rudiment, from the second I learned it I got so fast so quick.

  • i like,,,

  • @miketwo345 ohhh ok. Makes sense. Thanks for the correction :)

  • don't take my word as an experts advice but for those who're curious how this is done I believe you must hold the sticks firm enough to bounce. At higher speeds it seems to work well to let them bounce back down from your grip as you press into the drum lightly

  • don't take my word as an experts advice but for those who're curious how this is done I believe you must hold the stick firm enough to bounce at higher speeds it seems to work well to let them bounce back down from your grip

  • @allooutrick That's a slightly different thing called a double bounce roll. For the double STROKE roll you actually have to use your fingers or wrists to make the second hit as loud as the first -- you can't just rely on rebound.

Double bounce is useful and much easier, but double stroke is what you should aim for if you're trying to be good.

  • this is soooo great i learned it in my first try!!!!

  • i loved the slow decline there, hot!

  • I cant do this =(

  • I wish Time Warp would do a video on double rolls.

  • been working on that and the flam its so confusing

  • your amazing! thank you!

  • Don't you think showing the action of your hands, would of helped make this a better instructional video?

  • @mrmarkymark58 Agree with you!

  • oh man... I press the replay button just to listen to this! )

  • NICE!

  • The only advice I can give us constantly practice simply just stroking the pad with just your fingers, and just improvise rolls and strokes to keep you from getting too bored. Try to always improvise area that you lack in, the more mistakes you make the faster youll get better :D If you feel that your double stroke is still lacking go back to the drawing bored and just practice your left hand improvise rolls and try it again a day or two. Thats how learned how to do it anyway..just gotta beat it

  • HOW THE FUCK DID YOU DO THAT!

  • @MINIMI95020 drop and grabs. you posted that comment 5 months ago so hopefully you understand how to do it by now. if not i may be able to help

  • @MINIMI95020 you start with just 2 single strokes, transistion into double strokes, and end in buzzes. just search those up and get smooth transitions...

  • @MINIMI95020 At one time,in slow pace, you are doing it twice per hand, twice right twice left, but after some speed is added, you have to let your stick bounces, similar like in a drum rudiments 4 video.one hand stroke = two time bounce,in medium speed, you have to lose your grip, and have to hold your stick nothing but index finger and thumb.sou you get that bounce.as you getting faster, you projecting more grip between that two finger, ofc,it's easier to do it on snare,on toms is a bit difficult.=)

  • @MINIMI95020 just bounce the stick lol

  • nevermind, i tightened the pad and now the bounce makes it soo much easier

  • i can't do it as fast as you.

How can I do it faster, or I have to practise practise and practise till a day, when it works good?

  • @lacz66 me too! i'm having the same problem... my left hand is the one giving me problem

    HELP PLEASE

  • WHEEL OF FORTUNE!

  • at 24 you stop double stroke rolling and u start cheating by restricting the sticks bounce

  • machine gun!!!!!

  • im using a pillow to train my wrists, saw a guy doing decent rolls on the pillows, but no matter how much i practice i just cant get the hang of it ... :(

  • A couple of times i went on this ( Great ) site and the videos went one right after the other , so i could practice the rudiments with out having to stop . But now it wont do it . Can some one please tell me what i am not doing or doing wrong . Sorry im just getting used to being blind . Thanks in advance

  • Those are some strange drum sticks.

  • This guy is crazy fast. How the hell does he do that with his left hand? lol

  • @songlover547 seeing as the shadows on his left hand never met, probably not :D

  • @songlover547 seeing as his shadow on his left hand never came together at any point, probably not

  • Downstrokes like a mother fucker. Sticks don't breathe or produce good sound quality. And you use all arm.

And your stick paths suck. I really hope nobody is watching these videos to learn shit.

  • @MarchingMaximous At the end of the day man, he can play the rudiments fast. It looks good to me.

  • You know what sucks. when you are a tenor player and you try to learn traditional

  • Nice drum sticks... I think?

  • to anyone who is intermediate to advanced at percussion- secret weapons for the modern drummer by jojo mayer is a great instructional video.

  • @rocopoco55 Simply buying a practice pad and a pair of sticks and practicing every day isn't guaranteed to make you great. You need to be practicing in the correct way, and it is a good idea to get a dvd or 2 (if you're not taking lessons) to get a good basic technique down (I've learnt this the hard way) So I wouldn't call books or videos silly, you can learn a lot from them.. so really you're "best advice for noobies" isn't good advice at all.

  • Wow this really helps!!! all the other videos on here are too complicated but u really help, thank u. i really need this to play snare in marching band for next week

  • he did bounce the sticks to make it go that fast right?

  • @jasonongsip yea, lol

  • @MasterMunkLeon thanks. coz if he wasnt.. that just insane... @_@

  • How can I get my right hand to go faster?

  • how do you get ur double strokes to go that faaast??

  • holy crap thats fast

  • sounded like a plan taking of

  • awsome but where can i get a pad like that

  • @luoiaisahindu any single music store in the nation

  • He is pressing a lot. That is not the best way to perform double stroke rolls. That's jkind of cheating if your don't let the stick bounce but press it on the pad,.

  • yeah every day, and not only with your hands, but your feet too!!

  • If your looking to learn all 40 rudiments check out TheMikeFix youtube channel, there is this poster that has all 40 on it, lol it helped me out so much!

  • Does anyone else notice that it is alot easier to play singles on a pillow, or a surface without any rebound?

  • yes. but not with traditional grip. trad needs more rebound to work well.

  • I find it harder to play without rebound actually.

  • i think you're wrong ...

in my opinion .. you should practice on a surface with a rebound because with the pillow you exert more effort and you don't use the finger control unless u want that :)

  • @hiphopsucks96 Wtf are you smoking?

  • Comment removed

  • @hiphopsucks96

i play the drums and its hard not 2 me but 2 noobs in drumming dont think beating on a damn pillow gonna help go take band classes or camps or go to a band director

  • @hiphopsucks96 Holy crap you're right lol. IE: Practicing on my bed. It actually might be better for your practicing too! it absorbs the hit, requiring more energy to strike/withdraw your sticks...endurance building? Idk.

  • @hiphopsucks96 i wonder if this is sarcasm...

  • @littlejmr15 it isn't. On double strokes, u don't rely as much on your fulcrum as you do with singles, cuz there's rebound involved. When you play single strokes, it actually takes more technique to build them up, because they force you to use more fingers, less wrist, and ultimately no arm. So when you play them on a pillow, there isn't any bounce working against you, so you don't need to use as much fulcrum. So it's easier.

  • @hiphopsucks96 this is probably the worst comment ive ever seen. when u play snare or quads, u rely on the bounce so u don't get tired. its better to play on a practice pad then on a pillow mainly because a pillow provides no bounce meaning u r using muscles to move the stick up and down AKA no technique. and u always rely on fulcrum... bad fulcrum means no bounce....

  • @hiphopsucks96 forgot to say that the only reason u should be playing on a pillow is to build endurance or if u play bass drum... but playing on practice pad is still better for endurance training =P

  • @hiphopsucks96 Makes more sense to practice on whatever gives the closest rebound to a drum, though.

  • @hiphopsucks96 - You must harness the rebound in order to play in a relaxed state. Allow the rebound of the stick to set your wrist for the next stroke. Playing on a pillow makes your wrist do all the work instead of the stick causing tension in you wrists.

  • @hiphopsucks96 Yes it's ALOT easier... anyone other than me play on their leg? It does hurt after a while but I think it's a comfortable surface for me to play on since it's around the area where a snare would be.

  • @hiphopsucks96 yeah but i dont think thats a good practice, u need to develop the rebound reflex and also i dont think u can get a consistent machine gun sound with that second stroke on a slower surface at high speed.Best thing for me is one stroke with the wrist and after the rebound u catch it up with the fingers.Check out chapin video or tommy igoe or jojo's secret weapons on open roll

  • @hiphopsucks96 Yesss Omg Your Very Right.. . .

  • this guy is ok but not nobody i would want training from in i been playin for 10yrs

  • @md202025 What? None of that made any sense. U sound like Boomhauer from King of the Hill. : P

  • The closing of the roll was slightly dramatic. And perhaps a more economical view of the entire hands would a better idea. None the less, a definite example. Please understand that the use of finger control begins at relative tempos. The back of the hand is generally a more comfortable area for slower tempos and lower strokes. And I DO NOT suggest pillow practice, as it completely eliminates rebound in the worst of ways. Try adding towels to your practice pad.

  • @slavetothestix2 Jojo Mayer's advice! :)

  • Omg.

    My left hand is weak..

  • i dont like this wrist-wrist technique i find it really hard to speed up.Check out derrick pope double stroke , harder at the beggining but after u learn that wrist-fingers technique its easier to speed up and also is really good for paradiddles :)

  • @blapis89

You don't like but you don't use fingers when you are at slow tempo and training double stroke open roll. I train (you should too) on pillow and with wrists and accents. Better result ofcourse

  • forearms should burn, right? if so then need to workout those forearms then

  • No, they shouldn't! That means you are playing with tense hands or wrists. You should be completely relaxed. It should feel as if you worked out your arm muscles while doing the rudiment.

  • I know like 10 drummers

i know 6 rudiments, the rest 3 or doesnt know what is it O.o

    i would go 5% xD

  • I learned rudiments before I got a full drum set.

But the double stroke rolls are handy when moving around a full set.. doing a buzz roll just doesn't get loud enough on the toms.

  • i can´t do these for shit.but i don´t know why cause they are simple as hell.i have to practise some more =S

  • Finaly , Someone who dosnt Buzz.. Thats Great :)

  • TOTALLY AGREE :)

  • If you want a coplete quality PDF with the 40 rudiments go to drumwatch.wordpress(dot)com

You'll find drum music sheets. Daily updated drummers blog.

  • sweet!!!!!!

  • ur left hand doesnt go down and come up straight, it goes in circles

  • what kind of drumstick are that????

  • How long have you been playing the drums because there isnt a word to describe how good you are

  • Your doubles stroke rolls sounds really clean, good job man!

  • I like your vids because they are clear, self-explanatory, succinct and you don't waste time with talking. Great job. Thanks.

  • Well that's untrue....

  • ...and you took precious time out of your life to tell me that you don't care. Ironic?

  • is that the soundtrack of the movie Jaws? ha

  • I thought he would play faster as I was playing along, I can go considerably faster I'm pretty sure he can too considering I haven't been playing very long.

  • He's only dong it to the standard at which it's accepted as being able to successfully pull the rudiment off.

  • what kind of sticks

  • the brand looks like a pair of pro-marks

  • i dont know why someone gave you a thumbs down. they are promark sd-10 marching sticks. i just bought a pair this past saturday. i love them. i prefer them over vic firth almost.

  • JESUS MARIA AND JOSEPH !!! that was fast! :O

  • what about those who are left handed, and have a problem with their right lol

  • im right handed, so to strengthen my left i started alot of rudiments w/ my left. So try starting w/ ur right for a while and see if things gett better.

  • RUDI RUDIMENT

    LOL

  • iam bad with my left hand... argh..!!! my left hand does 1 stroke but my right does 2 ... damn i have to prac more

  • Well I saw the Drum Rudiments #5 video. One guy said he was left handed but he was faster with his right hand. He got that way by doing strokes like (LRR LRR LRR). So try reversing it like (RLL RLL RLL) good luck man

  • i dnt know why, but almost every beginner is bad with the left hand..i'm like that aswell.

  • why is everyone marking it down it the truth

  • It's about the rebound....not the stroke. Check out some finger techniques....learn a CORRECT grip....german matched, american matched or french (timphany). All allow good finger control.

    Good luck.

  • holding sticks way to tight and loosen up the wrists!

    nice job tho

  • BEST ADVICE FOR NOOBIES

dont waste your money on silly videos or books

just go buy two sticks and a practice pad and practice hard every single day.

  • Yeah the only books you'll want to buy are the ones with exercises in them. Otherwise, technique books/videos are a waste of money. If you want to learn technique, and more advanced stuff then take lessons.

  • @rocopoco55 do invest in a private lesson teacher, books and videos are dumb because they dont correct your flaws and they dont stop you from developing bad habits

  • @rocopoco55 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA XD dude you crack me up XD

  • @rocopoco55 ROFL i just ordered a drum pad and sticks... and was watching how to play paradiddles

  • Again, way too much wrist. You are working way too hard and your smoothness is suffering. Learn to use the rebound method and your fingers instead of your wrist.

  • whats the rebound method? (form a beginner drummer)

  • It's pretty simple really. First, place the stick between the pad of the thumb and the second digit of the index finger. You don't want it too loose or tight. You use the wrist to being the stick down in contact with the head. Allow the natural "rebound" of the head to bring the stick back up. You then use the middle and ring fingers to bring it back down. The best explanation of this technique, is in Jack Bennett'S "Ultimate Drumming System". It will be the best drumming investment you make.

  • gotya! thanks a lot!!

  • Lol yea sounds like the hits are being choked... not suprising considering this guy is using TREE TRUNKS!!!! These are the chunkiest mothers i've ever seen!!! I want one lol!

  • now try not getting louder as you go faster

  • That's crazy!

  • Those r some wierd drum sticks

  • Hes using only the wrists??

  • This one is easier then the others.

  • agreed

  • how much difference does wrist double stroke vs finger double stroke in terms of playing in music?

  • volume

  • I need to get a practice pad I'm supposing.. I'm self teaching on the drums and now I'm seeing that I've got rudiments to learn... so a practice pad is much needed... any recommendation on a good one that DOES NOT have to be mounted on a cymbal stand?

  • i recommend the HQ double sided pad or the vater double sided pad. the HQ has a quiet side and a very hard and loud side so you can hear yourself when doing really fast diddles. I have the Vater double sided pad that is on a sound percussion snare stand. I like my set up. One side is soft and the other side is a little harder but audible (not as much as the HQ). the HQ pad is easier to get dirt and other stuff of off too

  • Yes and no...Imo.

You need to know rudiments for any drumming.

Here's an example. Look up Travis barker snare solo on youtube. [ATTENTION, DRUMMERS, don't laugh, I know it's not amazingly difficult] but there is a good beat. But all travis is doing are five stroke rolls, flams, long double stroke rolls, backsticking, and a rimshot. All rudiments. I believe ahaha.

  • Basically if you're too fuckin stupid to learn by sight he's demonstrating how to go from played the roll closed when you play it slow to playing it open once you speed up. If you couldn't pick that shit up then put the damn sticks down and rethink your musical selection.

  • laaaaaaaaaaaammmeeee

  • rudiments are great man, ive been practicing five of them a couple of days a week for some months and you can really feel the difference. I'm much afster and my arms and hands are not robot-like anymore

  • Let me give you young bucks a comment. This person knows something. It ain't teaching. And it ain't a rudiments. Rudiments are about control. And a true rudiments take up to four minutes to prove.

  • For all you idiots out there, if you were teaching somebody how to ride a bike, you would over exagerate your actions so they can easily see what to do. Likewise the drummer here has his sticks/elbows/whatever you guys bitch about up so you can more easily see how to do it.

  • YEAH, EVERY SINGLE BIT OF IT IS WRONG.

YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING RIGHT. WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?

    Also, shut the fuck up.

  • THANK YOU !!!

    all his videos

IF UR GONNA SHOW THE RUDIMENTS USE PROPER TECHNIQUE

traditional pipe band grip... not kit u dick

  • too much arm! :p

  • i think ur movin ur elbows

  • sorry stiffy

  • arent his sticks really high?

  • lol, i can keep up till about 24, ill have to work on this one. these are great and are helping me a lot.

  • yeah same here.

  • my hands r pretty slow so i cant do that. but i made up my own version of the double roll. lett it bounce twice like a note with the z over it continuously by eache hand and get faster. it should sound pretty dramatic and its not hard

  • guess I could use it. hey, and who thought this comment was bad ? my hands are slow too...

  • and the breaking point is heaps obvious,

like wen he slows down and speeds up, as he goes to diddles or out of diddles it is messy which creates a bad sound.

  • are you black

  • yeah i'm black i could do faster and cleaner diddles than that. why the f*** u wanna know?
