To me it looks like Preez couldn't get under Ross' chest so went for under his arm/shoulder. Then he went to lift him but Ross was still scrummaging legally, so he released his bind and left Preez stand up and then bound on his chest stopping him getting back down. I'm a loosehead and I use the Preez tactic to overcome tightheads who have good upperbody strength but don't have the brains to slip their bind and let me up on my own. Ross does have the brains, but didn't have an understanding ref.
There is about 5 people that commented on this video that actually know what they are talking about. Ross slipped his bind and forced Du Preez up and out of the scrum. It's simple and a correct decision from the ref. I am a massive munster fan but even if the roles were reversed I'd still comment on whether the ref was right or not be it a for munster or any opposition.
I know we've had some in the past, but holy christ there's a LOT of leinster fans that don't know any of the rules!
I am a leinster fan and i do think that munster deserverd to win the game but the scrum was just stupid.
du preez breaks his bind then pops up mike ross was not at fault there and the ref got that completly wrong. they even highlighted this on the breakdown on setanta sports as a wrong desicion by the ref which completly changed the course of the game.
Has there been any improvement in Mushy's scrummaging? Ross has been great for Ireland but we all know Mushy would be incredible if he could scrummage.
only reason ross had to shift his bind was the munster front row were pooping up anyway, leinster demolished the munster scrum and poor reffing let munster away with it....
There's nothing "lucky" about it to be fair. Ross shifts his bind halfway through to put his arm in Du Preez's face and illegally push him upwards. The ref saw it and awarded the penalty.
@TegVeece , Du Preez cant take the pressure, hishead rises forcing Ross's arm up, just another poor decision by a terrible referee, have a look at it again there chief.

@Cailtegdfc All Ross did was lift up, and then force Wian up with his arm. Why would Wian buckle in the scrum just after pushing back the Leinster one few seconds before hand.
@Dunnooooo123 Well he didn't do it on purpose!! Fact is, 9 out of 10 times the penalty would've gone the other way. They both slip their binds almost simultaneously, but Du Preez is clearly the one who stands up when Ross puts the pressure on. Bizarre decision to penalise Ross for standing up. He clearly had the upper hand.
@tony10396861 He drops his arm first, that is where the penalty comes from. If the ref hadn't noticed, Wian would've popped up and Leinster would have gotten the penalty, but he did notice Ross' lifting.
@Dunnooooo123 Had another look and I think you're right, Ross does drop his bind marginally before Du Preez. Odd thing is though, the ref doesn't penalise him for that. He gave the penalty for popping up, which I don't see the logic of at all

@Feargface He has his up and downs, sometimes he pulls well, like this match, but then some days he doesn't scrummage quite as well i.e. Brive.

TBF McLaughlin disengages early, so even if the reason for the penalty is an error, the decision is still right.
