And he is one of the most creative and unique blues players ever. If there was a mount rushmore for the modern era of music. People often mention SRV when talking about Mayer. One big difference is the backing band. SRV had Double Trouble, who were solid, but they provided a pretty straight canvas for SRV to paint on. Mayer otoh, has two MONSTER players with him. They push and prod the crap out of him, and he seems to be up to the task. That alone gets him rather high in my book. Pino is the man.

I totally agree. Try! was a risk because no one had really heard his blues. But, Mayer is not a true blues artist, thats just one of his influences. The true risk Mayer took was Continuum because he was able to flawlessly combine all his music into a sort of blues pop rock combination that was unlike any other artist. Thats the risk.

He needs to develop his own style a little more this is true but SRV covered a million Hendrix tracks and no-one really criticises him for it. He needs to take the strong influences and craft it into Mayer, not SRV-lite. I agree with you, he could well be the outstanding guitarist of his generation. I still think he took a big risk with the move to blues and his new album moves away from that a lot, which I think is a bit of a risk too considering the fan base he had built up.

I really think that he is already a guitar god of our generation in his own right. Who is his competition really? There are tons of amazing guitar players now (Jake Cinnanger, Wild, Frusciante, etc) but Mayer is more popular than the rest... this will lead to him being a legendary guitar player in the future. And he should be, he's the best bluesman in the world with the kind of acclaim he has.

No this isnt on an album, its just a cover of The Mamas and The Papas song that he did for the Conan O'brien show. Conan is just a fan of his so he goes on his show all the time whether he has a cd out or not, like when he did a cover of Sweet Home Chicago when Conan had his show there. I disagree. I love John for what he is. But he has a very distinct style, rock, pop, blues, everything. If you listen for it, it's always there. People hate on pop, simply because of what it is. Pop. Pop has this association with Britney Spears and other nonrespectible artists. The truth is, though, the definition of pop is music in the pentatonic/blues key that is catchy. The genre has evolved. Pop gets a negative connotation because people immediately think bubblegum pop or pop princesses, POP simply means popular. Here's a simple trick, you can use an audio recording program or if you don't have one, that sound recorder on windows ( There's a trick to get it to record longer google it ). go to radio shack and get a cable that has an input at both ends that fits a headphone jack. Run your computers headphone into your input jack, hit record and play the song. Should come out as a wav file if you use sound recorder, but Itunes can convert it into Mp3. Or if you give me long enough I'll make an mp3 lol
