  • his voooooooooooiceee

  • I respond before I see him do the hanging thing... I was there , so lets see if it's real !!

only gig i've been to where every single member of the audience sang every word of every song

  • @clemzzz yeah it's real ! nice one !

  • One of the best songs of Smiths

  • mother disliked this 4 times

  • 或许只有莫西里本人知道 他有多忧伤

    再没有人向他一样表达这种悲伤的情绪

    独一无二

  • If only I was old enough to have seen The Smiths live. Unbelievable.

  • Like by the Belgium too, nice...

  • kill me now,,,

  • This is so fantastic, I thought the album version was amazing but this is sublime, wish i was there so bad, unfortunately it was before I was born...

  • Though she needs you

    More than she loves you...

  • Best song EVER

  • They had an additional guitar player to thinken the sound a little. Marr's the best with or without. The extended arpeggio at the end is gorgeous and the highlight of Rank. Morrisey's performance on this take is flawlessly beautiful furthering their legend. They were on top of the world at this moment and had the ballsy chops to defend it. The other two Irishmen ain't too shabby either. (Joyce and Rourke)

  • @1280ardd Very true, the outro is some of the best guitar work in pop. Easy to play, incredibly difficult to come up with.

  • Fantastic song. Jeff Buckley did a good cover of this too, but this is the ultimate. P.s. 4 people don't know it's over! :)

  • i cant even find the words to discribe how i feel with this song!

  • I didn't know this had been filmed. I was only listening to the album this morning and then I fouind this. This is why the Smiths were the greatest. Consummate musicians, great lyrics, everything just perfect.

  • yep ..better than even the beatles...best song ever writtennnnnn

  • @swzoo England even agrees that The Smiths were more influential than The Beatles. I think it was in the NME where they had a poll and The Smiths Topped The Beatles as Number 1.

  • Great Smiths song. Full of pain, hurt and self loathing!

  • better than the album version!

    "I know its over,

    and it never really began!

But in my heart it was so real..."

    T_T god that wrecks me..

  • @1013637 I understand and I love you

  • i fukin love love love this MAN!!! I live By Sir MORRISSEY!!!!!!

  • this is my favourite song of all time, such beautiful, but brutally honest lyrics, and sung with passion...morrissey puts so much honest emotion into this song

  • The following words I say with a sincerity that probably no one will understand:

I want to die so very much.

  • @1013637 I know exactly what you mean.

  • @Nekhben1 I'm sorry. But for whatever it's worth, I love you.

  • @1013637 If dying were what you really craved, you'd be dead already. You probably still have something to do among us, the living.

  • It's amazing how Morrisey could sound exactly like the original LP recording sometimes, his voice is perfect.

  • I never understood why this song didn't get the notoriety of some of the other Smiths songs. In my opinion it's their best song.

  • @wericcrawford 'cos it's a more slow song, which many people don't pay attention to, if a song isn't immediately catchy, then people sometimes just turn it off

  • @wericcrawford despite it being an AMAZING song

  • There are litteraly no words strong enough to explain how much I love this song(and this band).

  • Somebody propose a greater moment in pop history. Beatles and Stones fans, what do you got that comes close to this? In 20 years time, nobody touches this band. And, let's not forget making a special mention to Craig Gannon, who is absolutely integral to this tour and the melodic depth of sound. This is unbelievable and if you get it, then you know what I'm talking about.

  • ohh motherr

  • Amazing

  • Amazing Band. . . Just Amazing!

  • Wow

  • No dislikes. That's all.

  • OH MY GAWD! This is one of the most melodic live performances I've ever seen.

  • Aggh why did I have to b born in the nineties? I wish modern day music had this much heart and beauty... Oh well, at least I have these guys :)

  • amazing !!!

    luv <3

  • amazing !!!

    luv <3

  • im so amazed at his voice, it sounds exactly as it does on the record, and how professional the musicianship is, in all my years of seeing bands play live I've yet to experience a performance as intimate as this. The only modern touring band I can think of is Future Island

  • @confallon i agree, morrisey's vocal live during the smiths years is completely perfect. never wavers off the note, quite amazing.

  • there is only one morrissey

    and certainly only one smiths!!

  • I would have cried had I been there. Yup.

  • this is the best of the best

  • Back in the 80's, I was never a huge fan of the Smiths, just a big fan of Johhny Marr's playing. I think that it was the way the albums were produced...they just sounded flat and lifeless compared to a lot of great albums from the 60's, 70,s and early 80's. BUT this all changed when performances by The Smiths started cropping up on YouTube....they were sooooooo much better live than in the studio. And this Rank Album footage and sound quality is absolutely superb. I can't stop watching it! :-)

  • @blueznjazz123 especially right on this version of this track. Studio version is flat as most of queen is dead album.. and the 1st album sounded flat as well. Peel sessions really had much more energy.

  • Breathtaking, breathtaking, breathtaking. I listened to it in my earphones and I think both my eardrums and my heart broke.

  • the "rank" version of this song is so much better than the original!

  • Is it just me but you watch something like this which rips the guts out of anyone who's ever been long term single, then watch the shite you get each week on X factor.

  • *Speachless*

  • pure emotion xx

  • Is there any way you re-sync this vid Gambini? The music is slighty ahead.

  • hangs

  • love the way morrissey hung's himself in the end, at 4:51 =P

  • Comment removed

  • I could listen to this over and over. He is THE poet for my generation. Long live Moz!

  • I wish this song never ended

  • is this the actual footage of the Rank performance - does anyone know?

  • @SilentLD It sure is :-)

  • it is true that without this band i would not exist to write this comment, this band was formed for people like me. i hope i do not sound like a grumpy old man but as i type these keys alas i know i have transgressed toward that cliche, it was never as good as i remember ! but i write decent poetry because of morrissey, as he made it cool to express ones feelings albeit being a northern lad. hand in glove, how soon is now and late night maudlin street played at my funeral please.

  • Wow

  • Morrissey's finest vocal and lyrical performance......one to remember.

  • Every line in this song would be quotable in itself, and stand on its own in its brilliance. Honestly don't know if I know another song with that same quality. Brilliant.

  • Beautiful

  • If only I could travel back in time...

  • what else can i say?

this is the real deal. nothing has even come close since in sincerity

where does "pop" tread after this?

  • It astounds me to think of how great he was at word play, instead of saying i want to slit my wrists, help me... he says "the knife wants to slit me"...or "cut me" in the live version "do you think you can help me" almost asking if its ok for him not to kill himself

  • ..got me through Uni. I graduated last week.

  • Those lyrics kick my ass! Best song ever.

  • how can something so beautiful and uplifting come from such a dark place and time, gives me hope!

  • @AFIEBHC Can you explain what you mean by "dark place and time"?

  • i prefer the same day again.. but excelenttt performance... xd

  • "If you're so funny

Then why are you on your own tonight ?

    And if you're so clever

Then why are you on your own tonight ?

    If you're so very entertaining

Then why are you on your own tonight ?

    If you're so very good-looking

Why do you sleep alone tonight ?

let me travel back to 1986..

  • "Rank" is easily one of the best (if not THE best) live albums ever. I bought it on a whim in '88 (never had heard of them) and to this day, I'm still amazed by it - and the Smiths. Not only did that record turn me on to the Smiths, but it turned me on to find art. Not just in music, but in life. I hope everyone gets to have that experience. By the comments I've read, I think alot of people feel the same way. Thank you for the post!

  • Fantastic!!!

  • ohh just bury me . What a way to go. Class act and never to be bettered in that field of music ever again . Even Marr playing up to Joyce. Why did they fall out ?. Going to have to watch it again .

  • @mukkaspec I know it's been a year since you asked your question, but Morrissey and Johnny Marr had a falling out over a few things. For one, Morrissey was annoyed that Marr was moonlighting with so many other bands, doing guest appearances and such for acts that Moz thought was well below their standards. Marr, for his part, was tired of doing cover songs of '60s songbirds and having to follow along with Moz's other obsessions. Marr left the band and basically Moz never forgave him for that.

  • fucking dangerous that song

  • @Kablaine

    yes. it is.

  • I think I would have died of depression if I had seen that live.

  • This is magical

  • arguably one of the best songs ever written. and not only that it reaches parts of you that you want it to. job done . awesome.

  • @gazza319 from one of the best albums ever made :)

  • @FAndreee Correction, its from THE best album ever made :)

  • @gazza319 no argument.....best song ever written.

  • Amazing: loud loutish lover, treat her kindly, though she needs you more than she loves you...no one can match Morrissey's lyrics, or Johnny's music

There is a light that Never Goes Out...

  • i adore this

  • love this tuuuuuuuune.xx

  • this song defeats virtually all other songs ever written witin 30 seconds

  • i really love this song!!!

  • Hi all, not a word about Jeff Buckley's cover ? Hope you like it as much as I do. he was a huge fan of the Smiths as we're all...

  • awesome. the drummer is just perfect

  • I been listening to the Smiths since 1986 here in the States, and I still get freaking chills from this song. Incredibly powerful and moving song, if this song doesn't do anything for you you're not human...

  • @hardkore71 Well said, I feel the need to agree.

  • no other song sums up a break up like this one. thought jeff buckley did a good job of it too.

  • Love this song. words fail me. RIP john Peel. And here's to an end to the proliferation of song-contest Cowell-TV nonsense. Perhaps then we'd hear more of this special kind of music; crafted through hours of leg-work playing clubs and pubs and the kind of venues that would tear apart jedwood before their mouths had the chance to open. Thankfully.

  • @bryonyblack1 i actually HATE simon cowell, which is a strong thing to say and i wouldn't say it about many but i genuinely think he's ruining music, long live morriseey :D

  • sha sha

  • i so prefere this version. The lead guitar and vocals a much better on this version than the studio version. Stunning

  • The Smashing Pumpkins suck. If you buy their records you have no right to give an opinion on what you think is good music.

  • Comment removed

  • And you do, by the way? I mean, I like both S P and Smiths (You can't really compare them cuz it's different music) and so many other bands that most people wouldnt listen to twice, i bet we might even have a few in common. So because I like S P my taste sucks and you are the almighty ruler of music? That's the sort of attitude that Morrissey would hate, brother...

  • Mike Joyce's best performance on the drums. Absolutely brilliant.

  • If you're so funny Then why are you on your own tonight ? And if you're so clever Then why are you on your own tonight ? If you're so very entertaining Then why are you on your own tonight ? If you're so very good-looking Why do you sleep alone tonight ? I know ... 'Cause tonight is just like any other night That's why you're on your own tonight With your triumphs and your charms While they're in each other's arms..." this song sums up my life
  • MORRISSEY SAN

  • Best recording of the song. Long live Morrissey

  • I´m Fan from "the Smiths" since 1989. And i still love the Music. It is soo fantastic.... sorry for my bad english. ;)

  • I need you more then I love you

  • music for the rest of us the smiths

    hit 236,000 by google

  • the beatles can kiss my ass! why is anyone talking about them after such an awesome perfomance!! The Smiths/ Morrissey are the shit,! the beatles are done. RIP

  • Handsome groom give her room.

  • I don't mind the Beatles but first of all, there were way better bands around during the Beatles, who were heavier and just overall better. They just don't really compare to the smiths, I mean listen to this song.

  • his voice! :D

  • It is a source of eternal annoyance to me that I wasn't at this gig, being just barely not-born at the time. Curses.

  • simply amazing

  • After listening that song (once more after all these years), I don't know where else I can go... Viva MOZ' and THE SMITHS !

  • One of the best performances ever made.

  • As sort of a joke, this song should be on one of those monster rock ballads of the 80s compilation cds...it would blow peoples minds.

  • The Smiths don't need to be associated with those inferior bands.

  • That's why it would be a joke my man.

  • Mother I can feel the sweater is leaving me :D

    <3

  • what?! :)

  • easily my favorite smiths performance. morrissey and marr are the greatest. no offence to AR MJ CG

  • when you are down, you feel so much better after listening to this tune!

  • Magic...

There is no other word to describe it, never has been and i doubt there ever will be again a band as majestical as The Smiths

  • Hyperbole.

  • Can't think of anything! I'd like to hear after listening to this!

  • Funeral songs of the smiths?

Its GOT to be Vicar in a tutu. The true choice for any atheists...

  • Whattdo ya think smith fans, Craig McGannon any good with the Smiths?

  • just giving a helping hand on the guitars.. both of the guitar lines in a smiths live experience is good

  • I agree that this would be a fantastic funeral song, 'the soil falling on my head' is very appropriate! Surely Cemetery Gates would be too? Death of a Disco Dancer? Death at Ones Elbow? and if you're female....Pretty Girls Make Graves? The Queen is Dead? and one to get the church irked...Vicar in a Tutu!!!!

  • my funeral song is between this, that joke isn't funny anymore or asleep, but let's be honest, any smiths song would do :)

  • top5 balad............

  • ever :)

  • The Smiths are the greatest band in the history of music. This song shows you why. Rolling Stones? Beatles? Come on...let's be real! Moz and Marr are genious.

  • I agree, you re totally right

  • Yep.

    Well said.

  • you havee ALL THE REASON ,its simple THE SMITHS!!!!

  • I agree too

  • Do you guys even listen to any other bands? And I don't mean on the radio, I mean invest time and listen to albums.

  • The Smiths are my fav band but yes I constantly try to discover new bands. But you're right, lots of Smiths fans keep sticking with the Smiths for far too long. They're really good but hell listen to what the stone roses released in 1989. It easily overclasses the Smiths debut album and it's two years after the Smiths' split, so yes there are other things worth listening to, the Beatles for instance ;)

  • The Smiths are great, but The Beatles paved the way for all rock bands to have creative control over their own music, if they want it. Show some respect. The Beatles are not my favorite band but they are definitely the 'greatest band in the history of (rock) music'...

    The Smiths... Pfft

  • @lasthurrah19.. Hyperbole? have some respect? it's not about respect matey... Yes the Beatles were a cracking band BUT it's not simply about sales, or whether the band is groundbreaking... The Smiths INFLUENCED an entire generation and era and will continue to, as will The Beatles... The Smiths appeal lies in their quirkyness... Oh and the smiths signed to a relatively small record label, giving them control; if you're going to attempt to slate the smiths, don't do it on one of their videos...

  • I appreciate that you really like The Smiths... that's great. And the Smith have influenced many bands, no doubt... but the Smiths will not be a big band in the footnotes of music history like The Beatles will be. That's all I'm trying to say.

Also, you say the Smith's appeal lies in their quirkyness [sic]? I would give them more than that. A band like Weird 'Al' is "quirky".

  • Further, I'm not trying to "slate" The Smiths. It's when someone types something like "The Smiths are the greatest band in the history of music"

This is obviously a subjective question and many people will have their own answers, so to say something like that is to undermine the 99%+ of people who won't agree with you.

Also love how you say The Beatles were a "cracking" band... most likely their would be no Smiths if their had been no Beatles. The Beatles influence almost every rock band...

  • ...whether they like it or not. It is unavoidable. If they are not influenced by The Beatles directly, they are influenced by a band who were influenced by The Beatles, most likely. Even if that isn't true, go back one more "influence" generation and it gets even harder to avoid... and so on. You'll never be able to say that about the Smiths. Sorry. I can't say that about my favorite band either, much as I would like to be able to.

  • BTW, Hammondeggz, The Beatles' appeal lies in their songcraft and ability to connect with a large variety of people through emotion, which is conveyed through their music. Even though he's dead, John Lennon is STILL communicating and will be for a long, long time, as will the other Beatles. Emotional songwriting, risky recording techniques that are still being used to this day but which had rarely or never been used before (esp. by such a popular band), so many things make the Beatles amazing.

  • @lasthurrah19 I can really empathize with your attempt at circumspection on an issue which compels so many to forfeit any reasoning, but simple precedence in time shouldn't mean automatic prestige. Buddy Holly is clearly musically inferior to the varied textures of the Beatles- yet he is (along with Chuck Berry) their prime influence. Does his influence upon them transform him into an even more hallowed musician as the Beatles' forebear?

  • My funeral song, definitely.

  • and my too

  • It's so perfect u wanna hear it again& again 4ever.

    2 bad it's over...........

    Rourkey I love u!!!!!!!!

  • Perfect!

    Thanks

  • does any one else agree that this this is the best song in history.

  • Joyces drumming on this... wow

  • The Smiths, the best bandever, not even the Beatles can be compared.Moz and Marr, Joice and Rourke love you for all the great songs you left for genertations to come.

  • Not even The Beatles can compare to The Smiths? Yeah, right. The Beatles are the reason bands like The Smiths could/can exist; they took creative control from the label by proving they could create and sell their own, superior music. Have some respect. I have my own favorite band (not The Beatles or The Smiths), but I would never even consider them better or more groundbreaking than The Beatles.

  • @lasthurrah19 so what is your favorite band? Im curious to know.. you have mentioned you had one a couple times on here...

  • pre-breakup pumpkins

  • My personal favorite band. Not "The Greatest Band Ever No One Could Ever Compare"

  • Absolutely fantastic..
