@Kardacar I'm Christian. I actually just finished a production this past weekend, I played Simon the Zealot and Peter. There are a few changes I agree. There isn't a resurrection because they wanted to focus solely on the conflicts between Jesus and Judas which weren't directly mentioned in the bible; it's considered a traditional passion play. The plot of the musical is how Judas betrayed his best friend and the consequences that he faced, which led to his death.

@Kardacar I'm Christian. I actually just finished a production this past weekend, I played Simon the Zealot and Peter. There are a few changes I agree. There isn't a resurrection because they wanted to focus solely on the conflicts between Jesus and Judas which weren't directly mentioned in the bible; it's considered a traditional passion play. The plot of the musical is how Judas betrayed his best friend and the consequences that he faced, which led to his death.

This song (and others in the musical) show the confusion those closest to Jesus felt when they faced the decision to give up EVERYTHING to follow his message - to throw away their world view. It must have been scary. That's why Mary comparing Jesus to other men she's known just doesn't work. Think also of Judas in Too Much Heaven On Their Minds trying to be so REASONABLE - wouldn't most of us have had the same reaction?. Works for atheists, too - life has many such forks in the road.

Now I sing everythings alright to put my baby daughter to sleep. The movie and music have a lot of meaning to me and I don't believe in any God.

I believe she is expressing a realization & fear that Jesus is a love that can not be matched in her past life and she is afraid of what Jesus has done to change her life which was so cool and prone to pleasures of the flesh but this new love of hers is a Soul changing love. Yet she can not understand why He does not seem to be a man rhat enjoys her physicalcality in the flesh . She even expresses a fear that she could bring Him down by getting him to respond to her in the flesh.

@NewEnglandSquatch could be more complicated. in early Christianity (the Gnostics and other groups) Mary was seen as the follower of Jesus most advanced. In the Gnostic Book of Thomas and "Book of Mary Magdalene", there is evidence that Jesus confided certain secrets teachings (meditation? etc?) with Mary only. There is evidence that other apostles were jealous of her and branded her a whore. We are not certain who she really is (much of the Gnostic gospels are missing, unreadable). love to all!

Do you really think people in Israel in those days had our European names like Paul and Peter etc...Ah, no. Mary Magdelene was actually a powerful person. The daughter of what we today would call aristocrats. Webber is always right on with his performers. The story is she was singing in some crappy bar in London when Rice and Webber walked in and heard her singing. They walked up and asked if she wanted to sing in a movie.. I heard the same thing with Michael Crawford as the 'Phantom'. Webber saw him on BBC TV and called him to star in the broadway show. Crawford said "I'm not a singer, I'm a comedian". . Webber reportedly said "Dont worry, we'll teach you how to sing".. LoL

From what I realize, Mary Magdalene's love for Jesus was a love so pure, from a loving Savior to a pardoned soul... bestowing grace, when no one but Him would give salvation without recompense. Imagine a young woman, condemned by the very men who used her body and mind... ready to stone her to death so that these men may rid themselves of the guilt of having had a part of her sin. From her eyes, now see the Jesus who asked from her nothing but to "go and sin no more." Who would not love Him?

Yvonne Elliman's perfection in artistic expression I dare to say could have made her a strong role for Juliet if it weren't for Olivia Hussey . In Jesus Christ Superstar film, prior to this moment where there was commotion and tension. But Yvonne in keeping with Mary's role renders in all of us who listens, a refreshed feeling from her musical no one else could have done.

This musical is worse than trivial; I think anyone with taste and discrimination would be capable of realizing that this music trivializes one of the most extraordinary stories in history. Compare the trivial, banal, sentimental music of this score with, say, Bach's St Matthew or Wagner's Parsifal. Webber makes me ashamed to be British.

I personally think the movie version got the balance right.
If you don't like it then, form what you posted, it sounds like you don't like this particular art form rather than the material.
