Lol...this aint a "One shot" gun buddy. It receives the target from radar, tracks it on it's on, then fires on it. Not JUST fires on it, mind you, but fires on it and literally cuts it into pieces, then cuts them into smaller pieces. VERY wicked weapon, my man. I was on that same ship for 4 years and saw that same gun fire many times. It is so loud and violent that that you jump out of your skin when you hear it. AWESOME!!
I was on board the first ship to have one of these. The USS King, a guided missle frigate. The missle launcher was removed and this thig was installed. We were at the missle range every week, near Channel Islands, off California coast. We had about 12 scientists with us who were developing it.We would see, basicly, what is in this video.A jet flying overhead, and a target being towed behind it.You can not apreciate how loud this gun is, from the video. You could hear it from anywhere in the ship.
Well, yes, they are designed to be automated. This was the first ship application of the system had already developed for land use.We were all shown a movie that showed how the Army was using it.We had a bunch of engineers and computer scientists on board who were trying to make it work right.
Obviously that was later. That was two years after we had one. That may have been the first to have one fitted where it was designed to have it. We were just researching it and developing the guidance software.
Actually my mistake. The Phalanx (production model) was first tested on the Bigelow. A precursor based on the M163 VADS, not the MK 15 Phalanx, was tested on the King in 73. The system tested on the King was a earlier CIWS that was basically retrofitted onto an FFG. The actual Phalanx wasn't tested until 4 years later on the Bigelow.
Probably right. They called it the phalanx project but it was really more of a variant of the Army's Vulcan. They may have made improvements from what we did to make what they officially called the phalanx. You could not tell the difference from looking at it but there was probably some improvements.
How did you get on a naval ship with a camera and film a military gun firing without getting shot yourself?

You can't compare this in any way.
Zhe Phalanx System isn't only a gun but a complete self denfense system.
dnmx31 2 years ago
That thing fire 83 bullets a second .
It was firing 7 sec so ~581 bullets...
But the system also have a weakpoint.
It must be reloaded manually and that takes time.

Is it really as accurate as people say, because that thing looks powerful
rprince418 3 years ago
That was probably 200-300 rounds, and anywhere from 10-25 probably hit the target.

The first ship to be fitted with a Phalanx was the USS Bigelow in 1977, not the King.
