i know a lot of these guys, they're all really smart and know their shit, at least the guys in the village - they shouldn't have to put up with any shit, they have it hard enough to begin with

Great book scene now gone forever. NYU worked hard with EVERY mayor, especially the cruelly fascistic & simple-minded former cop Giuliani to lay real claim to all streets surrounding Washington Square Park, to actually OWN them and charge rent to vendors, payable to NYU. Many Universities have gotten away with this (Syracuse U. most notably has destroyed the city it inhabits), but thanks to the booksellers the NYU plan was at least delayed for many years.
