there's a co-op mode campaign and in versus you need to choose 'play with friends' make a lobby etc. but be sure other player pressed start xD

you go to campaign or versus mode then you click play with friends then create your own lobby it takes at least 1 person to be infected and another for survivors you select your characters-i do random- and then you play but on the 1st main page screen the other player must sign on too

To play Split Screen Versus Mode Offline, click versus mode, then start a lobby. You can play as Humans or Infected. Hehehe .. I just found this out a while ago while playing with a friend!

It's the same as the PC, AI bots replace a survivor if a person playing as a survivor leaves.
