  • I hope they play this in 2017, as us Canadians celebrate 150 years as a country. It's just fitting.

  • I was 7 years old at Expo 67 GREAT time to be Canadian!!!!!!!

  • I'm so glad I have a 1 cent centennial coin! I'm gonna treasure that thing my whole life, and I'm only sixteen.

  • Anyone know where I can find "Let's Have A Ball in Montreal"? it was a submission to the contest for theme song for expo 67... I heard it a long time ago, it was a big-band genre song. by Irene Harrington. thanks

  • thank you for sharing this! my mum grew up with this when it was all the rage. i just heard it today for the very first time :) happy Canada Day!

  • @kahokarl1 Happy Canada Day to you and your mom!

  • My Mum is in this recording she was one of The Young Canada Singers

  • @ALEW728 That's wonderful. Tell her thanks from me! I think it's one of Canada's greatest songs.

  • This brings back great memories! I remember riding on a giant birthday cake float in the Canada Day parade in 1967 with my sister and aunts.

  • @fossilsue A cake float - what fun! I, along with other dancers were made up the shape of B.C. on the lawn at Empire Stadium in Vancouver that year. Great memories, thanks for sharing.

  • From: the Case for Canada - "The firm Vickers and Benson recorded the song using young professional singers from Toronto and Montreal, and then filmed a class of Etobicoke school kids marching through parks and mouthing the words.

The combined effect, about 60 seconds at the beginning of the promotional film, was such a hit with the Centennial Commission they asked that it be made into a commercial. It played across Canada for months in 1966." I was in that - my 15 minutes of fame!

  • And 1967 was a very good year....remember it well.

  • Wow ! I haven't heard this song in over 40 years, we all had the single record (45's) of it when we were in public school. This sure has brought back alot of memories.

Canada had 20 million people in 1967 as per the song. Boy, have we grown!

Thanks Picardy for uploading this forgotten gem!

  • @cheeriosinabowl Yes, didn't we all have that '45 and learned to sing the song at school. Such good warm memories. Did you stand in line with your school to go on the Confederation train? I was living in Vancouver then, and remember it well. All the best...go Canada and go Canucks. They won again tonight.

  • Great video. At the 1:40 mark it shows a photo of the Guess Who with Burton Cummings, Dominic Troiano, Gary Peterson and Bill Wallace. Troiano didn't join the band until 1974 so this is not a photo of the 1967 Guess Who line-up which along with Cummings also had Randy Bachman, Jim Kale and Gary Peterson. Would have been nice to have a shot with Bachman in it.

  • As an 8 year old I went to Expo 67 in the back seat of a VW bug. Wow that was a wonderful trip. This song is just the way Expo was in those days. We all were sure proud to be Canadians in those days with a party the world had never seen before.

  • @tjhx213 Nice memory for you. This song evokes that wonderful time. Keep playing the song and you can be there again. I remember the Confederation Train coming to Vancouver and we all learned to sing this song in school. Good times.

  • I think 1967 was one of the greatest years in the history of this country. I have looked at old newspapers, and things were good for Canada. Thanks for posting.

  • I Love My Country So Much!

  • The first 9 seconds of this song ooze a 1960's like no other song

  • hahaha cool song! i read about it yesterday in my social studies text-book, and decided to look it up. :)

  • My husband was in the commercial that appeared on tv for this song, it had children in red ponchos. They stood in a field and made the shape of the Canadian flag , as a crane shot pulled back from above. We'd like to show our children-does anyone know where to find it?? Remember it? Can't find it anywhere. Thanks

  • Hi Sodapopsays. That's really neat that your husband was in a commercial for this song with Bobby. The closest I could find, is the video that is right after mine - it doesn't have kids in red ponchos though unfortunately, so it's probably not the one you were referring to. If it was a CBC commercial, you could try contacting them to see if they still have it in their archives. Best of luck!

  • @SodapopSays I believe that was filmed at Thorah Central Public School in Beaverton, Ontario. I was supposed to be there that day but it was ridiculously cold and my mom kept us home so we wouldn't freeze in the red ponchos... I did go to a rehearsal at the Beaverton arena... but it wasn't filmed for this song... it was a recording of O Canada... a bilingual version... promoting Canadian unity and bilingualism... there was a copy of the film at the school I attended...

  • As a 7 yr old, I sang - along with another couple hundred kids or so from various elementray schools across the city - with Bobby at the exhibition grounds in Saskatoon when the centennial celebrations passed through town .. a memorable time of hope and optimism for the future.

Up until the CRAP took power in 2006.

  • YAY!!!!!! Happy Birthday! Bonne fete, Canada! We love you!!!

  • @Picardy you are exactly right, never a truer word spoken.

  • Great old song but damn that Trudeau turncoat.

  • 1967.... I remember the Confederation train, the triangular Centennial Maple leaf everywhere, and of course this song and Ontariarioooooooooooooo ; I was only 6 at the time, but, I remember it all so very fondly!!!! ^_^

  • I was 12 and remember the Cominco pavillion and all the different things you could smell and taste! And Habitat - little boxes on the hillside...

  • wow...my parents bought the 45 and saved their 67 liscence plate in our shed. I was 5 and even remember some of the words to the song. thanks for the post...brings back some great memories of my childhood. yes my parent were proud canadians and so am I.

  • best part 1:21 through 1:23 :]

  • I went to Expo '67. I was seven. My parents bought this 45. English on one side French on the flip side. For some reason I thought it sounded funnier on 78 rpm. Remember, I was seven at the time.

  • 1967, We immigrated to Canada in June that year to Vancouver. I was only 8 years old then but I remember this song back then and the word CENTENNIAL, but didn't understand what it was about being so young at the time. But how I heard that song Canada, a lot that year was on an old morning TV series in the summer of that year and it was called "Petes Place" which featured ventriloquist Peter Rolston and his dummies/pupets George, grumpy, doople just to name a few. Does anyone recall?

  • @unhooked25 I only saw this comment just now on my video. I remember Pete's Place, as it was taped in Vancouver where I lived. I was almost on the show one St. Patrick's Day with my Irish Dancing class. I had the leprechan costume and everything, but unfortunately I got sick and wasn't able to attend the rehearsal, so wasn't allowed to be on the show. Great show. Do you remember the show Planet Pals?

  • @Picardy, thank you for your reply to my comment. It sounds very unfortunate you were unable to attend the rehearsal for that show back then and yes, I vaguely remember the show Planet Pals.

Yes, those days were something else. No one was even thinking about things like inflation or unemployment etc. back then.

  • Love this song........Canadas' anthem

  • If this were our National Anthem I'd sing it every day.

    Thank you

  • @kokopelli314 Let's make it ours then!

  • What a riot...

    Haven`t heard this since `67!

    Thanks for posting!!!

    What A Hoot!!

  • Crazy weird... I actually sang on this recording way back in early 67. Got paid in hot dogs and chocolate milk. Gimby was like this weird pied piper with jewels all over his clarinet. T'was a lot o' fun, as I recall. Finally found my own copy of the 45 back in the early 80's in an abandoned schoolhouse I was using as a rehearsal space. Too much fun ...

  • NICE ONE JOEF4 ! You go - that is awesome!!!!!

  • @joef4 . You lucky dog, hot dogs were so tasty when we were little kids. The clothing was something else. I'm so proud of you. You made history isn't that incredible. Have you kept in contact with any of the other kids that track. Wouldn't it be cool to have a reunion!

    Thanks Terry

    from Calgary

  • It doesn't really seem all that long ago. 20 years I'd believe, but ....

Some of those images with that song I have clear memories of. I must have seen it on TV I suppose. This was one of the few records we had -- we had only acquired a record player recently

  • haha i love this song its so cute:)

im doing a project on expo 67 and im using it..lol

  • Expo 67. I remember the school trip and that we were not allowed to enter the Greek Pavillion b/c of the nude statues! Hard to believe!

Was 10 at the time at St. Elisabeth's school in Ottawa and sang this song in the school choir.

  • Bobby Gimby came to my school in Brampton ON in 1978 and i was in grade 4 and i got to be part of a choir that sang with him for a concert. It was the most awesome thing I ever did. We sang the "Canada" song as well as "Babyface" medley and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" and "The New Generation" all songs on both of his "Canada" records.

  • Wow! That sounds like an amazing experience for you.

  • yes it was ....i knew then i wanted to be a singer ....and am working on that now ...

  • I arrived in Canada around 1966-1967. I was in elementary school at the time. And I don't know how many other kids my age this applies to, but I had to learn this song when I was in school. Also,I think the image of the RCMP Musical Ride is on one of the old Calgary Stampede posters. It was sad when the CBC announced Bobby Gimby's death, and I recorded the song afterwards, so I have this on an old disk tape somewhere.

  • I loved this song! I was in Grade eight way back then. :)

  • I was eight years old when this song came out! I still have a copy still in the sleeve it came in! We went to Expo 67. I also have a copy of our Ontario song still in the sleeve! Thanks for uploading this great tune of our youth!

  • Nice memories. I think this was a very uplifting song for our country - I still know the words, and fake my way through the French parts, just like I did in Grade 2!

    Thanks for your comments.

  • I think I was in grade 2 as well! At JR Henderson PS in Kingston Ontario! We must be the same age!..LOL!

I remember the proud feeling being Canadian!

  • @Picardy Don't feel too bad, I'm French Canadian and fluent in both languages, and I can barely understand the French parts myself! hahaha (Kids sing cute, but, they don't pronounce very well sometimes!) :P

  • @Picardy : I love this song and I fake my way through the french parts to. I am going to hopefully have a cd to p lay it in our Canada Day Parade in Orillia , Ontario

  • @Railrodder Don't feel bad........ I am French Canadian and fluent and I can barely understand the French parts myself! hahaha

  • @Railrodder : I think this is a fantastic song and I would love to be able to download it to a cd so I can take it in our Canada Day Parade. I am going in it on my electric scooter. My boyfriend is going to help me decorate it and I am hoping to have a cd of songs to play to. Happy Canada Day.

  • OMG.... I was in a city wide school choir in 1967 that performed this and other songs celebrating the anniversary of Canada... this video brought back memories... thanks for posting!

  • Cool! Thanks for uploading. Happy Canada Day, my Canadian friend! Greetings from the United States of America, where this Saturday marks American Independence Day!

  • Thank you and Happy 4th of July to you on Saturday!

  • I still have my season's passport from Expo '67!

I wish the author of this video hadn't made it all sepia-toned. If ever there was a year to celebrate in Kodachrome, it was '67.

  • Expo 67 Montral Canada Apprently rocked i am 20

i cant wait for it to come back to Canada either in Ottawa, Montreal or Edmonton

  • Ah the memories,,,,I was in Kindergarten in 1967 and they would play this every Friday on movie day that year (We had a movie,,,usually educational like Jacques Couteau films every Friday aft. when I was in elementary school)

  • Great memories. Happy Canada Day!

  • thx :) you too

  • When I was in grade six, our school choir (Glamorgan Elementary) from Calgary sang with Bobby Gimby at the Banff Springs Hotel. He was such a kind and memorable man.

Anyone out there from Glamorgan school?

  • Must have been great singing with him - Happy Canada Day!

  • Yes it was. He had each of us wear a vauldville hat with wild decorations. That was cool!

Besides the Canada song, we sang "Little People", by Bobby Gimby, "The Cricket Song", and a mix of "Babyface / One of Those Songs / Waitin' for the Robert E. Lee", Bobby Gimby was a fantastic conductor and had such a way with the childrens choir.

Happy Independence Day to our friends south of the border from us up here in Canada. Our countries have always been good friends. Cheers! :-)

  • I Think They Should Play this song During Canada Day but adjust it so it says Canada Agae

  • they should reconfigure this song for Canada's 150th anniversary

  • Close, I went to Glenbrook elementary, and lived right by A.E. Cross Jr. High.

And for kindergarten, I went to Fairyland; no kidding.

    Clint Anderson

I had friends in Glamorgan, which was a bigger school, as I recall.

  • My first year in secondary school this came out along with a medalian of confederation in copper. 20 million back then, Canadas worth keeping. Say no to NAFTA and the WTO. After all if you own the resources of your country they should be defended as well.

  • gooooooooo canada

  • i was born in the 90's but i heard this song in my history class and love it

  • You just made me feel very old! lol

  • It's 42 years ago.

  • Oh yeah!

  • Oh yeah...

  • 62 years already! Can't wait till the 200th anniversary(although I'll be in my 60's.). Anyway, we can celebrate the 170th anniversary.

  • My God, I still have the 45 record of this somewhere. Hard to believe it's that old.

  • I still have a copy, too. Yeah, where did the time go.

  • Yeah...

  • Ah, the Maple Leaf, the Anthem, and the Moose! I can't wait to go back to the country that made this AWESOME world a little better.

  • I remember singing this in music class in grade 3. I still have the little centennial coin they gave us in school and I have the sheet music for this song too. I remember when the centennial caravans came to town, then the centennial train.

  • I remember all the same things! Maybe we went to school together!

  • Ah, the memories...

And the Leafs won the Cup!

    Good compilation. Thank you.

  • Yeah, the Leafs did...but, it was a great year anyway ;)

  • this is quite a catchy tune. :D

  • This is awesome, and brings back so many memories! I've also been looking everywhere for a video of The Travellers' "Something to Sing About"... maybe it's just me but I haven't found it yet... :(

  • In grade one ('67) our teacher taught us how to make centennial symbols out of match sticks glued to blue construction paper. We also were taught how to make them with multi-coloured paper rings we cut and glued out of construction paper. This song was known to every school-age child in 1967. Anyone still have their centennial medalions we were given in school that year?!!

  • Happy Canada Day!

  • Happy Birthday Canada, greatest place on earth to live.

  • We Rock! #1 in the World!

    Happy Canada Day!

  • I love this song so hardcore

  • Welcome to Canada 140th anniversary

  • Love this song..I sang it in my school choir when I was younger...at the music only part, we all pulled out little canadian flags...it was awesome!!

  • WOOT!!! Hes my cousin.

  • I was 8 years old at the time of the 100th anniversary of Confederation. I remember learning that song in my primary school, and the Ontari-ari-ari-o song. Our Grade 2 class in Windsor, Ont., started a scrapbook for Confederation. And my parents took me to Montreal for Expo 67. Man, I wish I'd been a little older, so I could've appreciated it more! Thanks for posting this!! Nice little trip down Memory Lane!

  • Great memory - thanks for sharing it. I, too remember learning the C-A-N-A-D-A song and singing it a thousand times and loving it! I also remember waiting for hours in line to see the Confederation Train with my classmates. Lucky you having attended Expo 67 that year!

  • Yeah, I was lucky all right... I just wish I could remember more of it!!

  • My parents also took us to Expo 67 but I was only 7. Now I only have a few fragments of memories left. I remember getting lost briefly in one of the pavillions! Maybe one day we could have Expo here in Toronto. That would be fun.

  • Ha! I remember being lost once or twice myself! I also remember my father taking me up for a helicopter ride, and us riding down a "log/water" thing... and seeing the "apartment buildings of the future"... and that's about it!

So you're in Toronto? Interesting! I'm in Mississauga! Howdy, neighbour! :)

  • the log/water thing is still there at LaRonde...its called "La Pitoune"...still a few traces of expo on the islands, namely those reflecting lamposts (although non functional), a few derelict signs, some great 60's sculptures and 6 or 7 pavilions in varying conditions.

  • Howdy

  • Love this song. yeah trudeau was not pm in 67 it was Pearson. That picture of trudeau was during the October Crisis. Take trudeau out, add Peason and you have it correct.

  • Nice clip. Not sure some of your images are from 1967-two Trudeau pics in particular (no one knew who he was in 67), but overall, I enjoyed it.

    Thx

  • You're quite right - just threw him in as part of the era though.

  • Actually, you're quite wrong. They DID know who he was in '67.

He held the Liberal riding of Mount Royal, and was Minister of Justice in Pearson's Cabinet. In 1967 he was persuaded to run for Liberal Leader, and in 1968 won the leadership convention.

So the pics aren't really out of place...

  • Good times, great oldies!
