@kenslizzard I used to hear her when I was growing up in high school and used to think it was way to surupy, but now I when I hear her voice it is clear she was in touch with every emotion I was feeling at the time but didnt understand. Karen and Richard were a fabulous talent and I love listening to their music, its timeless. It is rele too bad that she thought she was fat, because the world today needs a great love message that she always had in her songs and in her heart.

Feb. 4. Sonnet 18 Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer's lease hath all too short a date: (…) But thy eternal summer shall not fade Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest, Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou growest: So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. Well said, Willie
wow such a modern 80's sound... it could have been a Michael Jackson song ... I love Karen's voice SO MUCH! I wish I could have been there to comfort her.

Karen was about 10 years ahead of her time, when she chose this song to sing to (1979). The slow beginning to upbeat (transition) reminds me a lot of Gloria Estefan's song "Cuts Both Ways" (1990). Same basic song format / approach. But this pop song also gave Karen a chance to show her higher vocal range - more of her natural abilities as a singer. After hearing this song, she proved to be more than just an exceptional drummer and the beautiful lead singer of the Carpenters. Bravo Karen...
@amanda3685 - I wouldn't go quite that far.....Karen was EXTREMELY talented with a voice virtually unequaled by anyone (She is by far my favourite female singer), but to insinuate that Richard had no talent of his own is quite harsh...He composed many of The Carpenters hits
@amanda3685 - I wouldn't go quite that far. Karen had enormous talent and a phenomenal voice (Obviously, and she is by far my favourite female singer), but to insinuate that Richard wasn't very talented is quite harsh (He composed many of The carpenters hits). They were / are both amazing talent wise, and together I think they helped each other to even greater heights....
@amanda3685 RICHARD WAS NO SLOUCH ON THE KEY BOARDS & HE HAD A PRETTY GOOD VOICE ALSO, DID KAREN EVER RECORDED ' as time goes by " from casablanca I cant find that song on you tube if anyone has it please post it would really appreciate it.?
@amanda3685 Wrong Richard is, his music is epic and timeless, but she was the voice of the Carpenters and wished so badly her brother would get the amount of recognition he deserved that she always received.
I love this song its like amazing so pretty and sweet and one more thing i love karen carpenter she my biggest fan i wish i could of met her before she died but i would like to meet richard her brother this is my favorite song i love her songs and i am only 22 yrs old alot of people my age never heard of her !
Solo or as an integral part of the Carpenters Karen could never lose. She was the BEST. She always will be the best and there will probably never be one that even comes close. God I miss her... (yeh i was in love with her too...)
If Karen could see how a new generation has discovered her incredible songs, I think she would be so thrilled. She is truly a treasure. She lives in hearts forever and lives here at YouTube for her new fans and for all of us who grew up with her special heart-felt music. Probably the purest voice I've ever heard in my life.
What is amazing is that the powers that be at the time thought this song and the others on her solo album were not good enough? OMG, Karen you never needed their approval. You are and were great, we just wish you could have seen that you didnt need diets. Lovely, beautiful Karen.
Karen's was one of the most beautiful voices to ever grace pop music. Vocal quality has been sacrificed in today's era of vocal gymnastics, with one singer trying to outdo the next. This HERE was singing. Love the way they blend her harmonies, namely at 3:14.
They shelved her solo album which hurt her badly. She died unaware of how loved she was and still is. Karen Carpenter will live forever. My kids sing top of the world at school in UK so she's still here for the future generations. RIP KC.
I've always loved everything about KC but I never heard this part of her before so this was a real treat. Very good to hear something never heard before :)
Wow! I never thought she could go as high as in 1:16. The fact that she's a contralto and we're used to hearing only her lower register all the time. So I guess she has a pretty good chest voice range too.
i didn't like the songs from her solo album except for this one. This suits her better, i think this is something that Richard would do for her. i agree, the songs from their tandem are still the best.
But why should Karen's career have to wait on Richard? That was why A&M came TO Karen to suggest her doing a solo album, and they chose Phil Ramone...
As for the solo album...she was criticized for departing from the Carpenters sound, which was stupid...it was HER solo album. They were expecting a wedding song like We'Ve Only Just Begun......and yet with the Carpenters, she/they were criticized with putting the same stuff out over and over again...she just couldn't win either way...
the public was surprised for the change. They should have done it gradually if they want Karen to sing new songs. I think it's better if they had released a few singles rather than a whole album so that they could test the public's reaction and go from there.
@cd72 BUT what's ironic now is that the type of music she made a long time ago & had been criticised quite harshly is now sought after by a legion of people longing for REAL music. Their stuff is timeless!
I was hoping to discover that Karen did the beautiful ballad standard IF I HAD YOU from vintage '28, so this is disappointing. But she always did her best with the material she had.
What an amazing voice, As smooth as silk, all wrapped up in a nice cosy warm blanket of Delight and sheer contentment. Priceless. Irreplaceable, Doesn't get better than this. Thanks for posting. Love and Peace to everyone. LOL .
Ron9882 sent me a message today and it prompted me to look yet again at some Karen videos here. This piece shows her as a confident, mature woman - out from behind her brother's shadow. A Star. I echo my earlier quote from Steet Magnolias: "She will always be young; she will always be beautiful".
I don't agree that Karen was in Richards shadow. For better or worse they were a team, a partnership. If you listen to Karen's solo album you will understand how much she relied on Richard to create a sound that truly showcased her talent. Richard was the band leader and arranger, he is a very talented musician. Imagine if Karen would have had a brother like Keith Rlchards or Ozzy Osborne. I don't think we would have the great Carpenters music to listen to today.
Karen was a truly gifted vocalist. Richard was also a gifted musician, arranger, recording studio technician and band leader. Like any brother and sister they had their arguments at times but I think they both realized that they needed each other. Richard was supposed to be the musical star of the family. Imagine how he felt when his kid sister suddenly became the celebrity. But I think he realized that he and Karen together could accomplish things neither could do on their own.

Wow, you read my mind. That's exactly what I always trying to tell when people say that Richard has nothing to do with Carps' success. It's like saying that needle can sew without a thread.. Of course, frontmen always get major of attention, more than composers and musicians. But you wrote: "If you listen to Karen's solo album.... " - so my question is: what was in that solo album that should make people understand how much she relied on Richard? Richard didn't produce that album actually...
Karen's solo album was not bad but it did not have the Carpenters "sound". Aside from Karen's vocals, that sound was a big part of The Carpenter's success. I don't blame Karen for attempting to expand her musical horizons and in time I believe she would have become comfortable with this. She sounds somewhat tentative on this first attempt. I believe her best work was and always would be done with Richard. It is difficult to top perfection and, had she lived, she would have realized this.
In the beginning I think Karen totally relied on and trusted Richard to guide her career as well she should have. She had become a superstar which is probably not easy for anyone. As she aged, I think she wanted to establish her own identity, to be recognized as more than Richards sister and a member of The Carpenters. She wanted to be known as Karen Carpenter. For better or worse, her life and career was so entangled with Richard that might not have ever been possible. A tragic story.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I suppose, that the timing for making an album wasn't the best... First of all, she definitely needed to take care of her health, and second - I think it wasn't fair to Richard who was locked at the clinic. It seemed like she was deserting a sinking ship. Maybe if she would have waited a bit, getting therapy first, and waiting for Richard completing his rehab, then perhaps things might have turned differently for them and she could have done dozens of solo-albums with Richard's total support.
Good point. I think fame took it's toll on both of them as it does on many stars. Look at what happened to Michael Jackson, Elvis, etc. Karen and Richard had such a wholesome image I guess it was hard to believe that they could have the sort of problems they did. Karen had on of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. It was a shame to lose her at such a young age. The world lost a great talent.
Yes it would have been. It did get some radio play here in Indianapolis.. i remember how shocked yet happy that they were playing something new again. I love the songs Making Love In The Afternoon, My Body Keeps Changing My Mind and If i had you. those are my favourites one off the cd. A few of the songs here were released on other cds after here death.
I remember when this was released as a cassette single... i had it for years until my music got stolen. It is very rare and i think Karens' solo album would have been great. She was one who could sing anything and there were many rumours about why her solo album wasn't released until much later.. Richard stated in an interview that they both decided not to release it, but i think Richard was afraid Karen would take off and leave him behind.
Nixe007, you couldn't be more wrong, fans like me that grew up with her would have sent this song to number one if it was close when they were all over the Billboard Charts, geez, by 1996, even Madonna, was just about past her prime...you can't except the Carpenters to be popular in 1996! Thank God for Youtube, a forgotten or never heard treasure here for us to enjoy!
I never knew Karen went Solo, this song is so awesome, after reading a few comments I see it wasn't released until 1996, no wonder I never heard it... I was 36 by then!!! Yes a year after her passing would have been appropriate I think...
eventhough Karen was ever so proud and happy it must have felt wrong for both of them at THAT time thát year, and they never released The SOLO, back then.
Maybe it would have been better to release it a year from that time, like 1980 or so.
Anyway I am thankful for release 1996 is very late , and KAREN deserved no less then release in maybe up till 1984? one year after her Passing.
But Fans , we do Love that Solo Album, each and every song? KAREN Carpenter. produced by Phil Ramone
And I am so certain that RICHARD L. CARPENTER, had KAREN lived, would have released it much sooner, they would have come to a point wherethey maybe try some solo years, he was fighting this problem and not producing any music Karen wanted to record some songs, try some..and what came out that studio ................and
KAREN ANNE CARPENTER, part of Carpenters, succesful in young age performing, changes on stage, wishes to stay behind the drums, but finds it very enjoyable up front, cause people liked her voice but also her quick wit and humor, once the attention was on the looks, it started....and Karen did too many unnatural unhealthy things at the same time to keep her weight down, thát , and only thát is the reason why she lost the fight, cause Karen wanted to WIN ánd GAIN!
Beautiful! If I had to describe you Karen, you are beautiful all the way. You are so much missed and your music will always be with us, and until my last day on earth I know that I will be listening to your music with delight. Love you and eternal repose to your soul.
esta entre las grandes divas de la musica pop y aunque no me gusta comparar su voz es muy parecida a la de Mariya Takeuchi ,.... Karen, siempre estara entre nosotros y en esta gran pagina de YT que es lo mejor de todo internet .... SALUDOS
If I didn't know any better I'd think this was an actual video you'd see on Mtv. Truly an exceptional job in editing!!! Hats off to you...I really enjoyed watching this!
Thank you for sharing this with the World. It is so beautiful and it shows a different side of Karen, not a sad feeling, more of celebration of the Heavenly Wonder that was Karen Carpenter and her talent. I will always miss her, but I try to focus on her amazing legacy and all that she has given us. I will keep discovering new ways of hearing, seeing and feeling the LOVE that she was here, and I'm sure still is elsewhere! T/Y!
The picture of Karen at 1:00 is the all time best photo of her. If I could only have the music of one group/person it would be The Carpenters, hands down.

@thesami1973 - Karen spent $500,000 of her money to help create a solo album.
She absolutely wanted her album released (she thought it was great).
It seemed her parents didn't (she lost weight after they heard it first).
But for certain, her brother Richard, Herb Albert and others in management at
A&M records did not like it enough. If front of Karen, NONE of them supported
it in a meeting (when the time came to hear it). Only Quincy Jones liked it.
Karen had NO choice but to give up...

Wow! I never thought she could go as high as in 1:16. The fact that she's a contralto and we're used to hearing only her lower register all the time. So I guess she has a pretty good chest voice range too.

Lousy video! This video violates Rule #1 of music videos, which is that the video must have nothing to do with the lyrics.

If it wasn't for this video, I would've never heard this song. It's nicely done.

i didn't like the songs from her solo album except for this one.

They were expecting a wedding song like We'Ve Only Just Begun......and yet with the Carpenters, she/they were criticized with putting the same stuff out over and over again...she just couldn't win either way...
cd72 2 years ago 51
the public was surprised for the change. They should have done it gradually if they want Karen to sing new songs. I think it's better if they had released a few singles rather than a whole album so that they could test the public's reaction and go from there.
vonKyle777 2 years ago
@cd72 BUT what's ironic now is that the type of music she made a long time ago & had been criticised quite harshly is now sought after by a legion of people longing for REAL music. Their stuff is timeless!

I was hoping to discover that Karen did the beautiful ballad standard IF I HAD YOU from vintage '28, so this is disappointing. But she always did her best with the material she had.

Ron9882 sent me a message today and it prompted me to look yet again at some Karen videos here. This piece shows her as a confident, mature woman - out from behind her brother's shadow. A Star. I echo my earlier quote from Steet Magnolias: "She will always be young; she will always be beautiful".
leftatalbuquerque 2 years ago 4
I don't agree that Karen was in Richards shadow. For better or worse they were a team, a partnership. If you listen to Karen's solo album you will understand how much she relied on Richard to create a sound that truly showcased her talent. Richard was the band leader and arranger, he is a very talented musician. Imagine if Karen would have had a brother like Keith Rlchards or Ozzy Osborne. I don't think we would have the great Carpenters music to listen to today.

"If you listen to Karen's solo album you will understand how much she relied on Richard to create a sound that truly showcased her talent."
What do you mean by that? Can you explain please? From what I've heard they had a big tiff about an album....
Nixe1007 2 years ago

Nixe1007 2 years ago
Karen's solo album was not bad but it did not have the Carpenters "sound". Aside from Karen's vocals, that sound was a big part of The Carpenter's success. I don't blame Karen for attempting to expand her musical horizons and in time I believe she would have become comfortable with this. She sounds somewhat tentative on this first attempt. I believe her best work was and always would be done with Richard. It is difficult to top perfection and, had she lived, she would have realized this.

That's what most of her fans claime - that she wanted to escape far as much as possible from Carpenters image and sound..
Nixe1007 2 years ago
In the beginning I think Karen totally relied on and trusted Richard to guide her career as well she should have. She had become a superstar which is probably not easy for anyone. As she aged, I think she wanted to establish her own identity, to be recognized as more than Richards sister and a member of The Carpenters. She wanted to be known as Karen Carpenter. For better or worse, her life and career was so entangled with Richard that might not have ever been possible. A tragic story.

Nixe1007 2 years ago

This could have been a big hit!!! So stupid to not release it till over 10 years after she died!
CapricornDavo 2 years ago 2
Yes it would have been. It did get some radio play here in Indianapolis.. i remember how shocked yet happy that they were playing something new again. I love the songs Making Love In The Afternoon, My Body Keeps Changing My Mind and If i had you. those are my favourites one off the cd. A few of the songs here were released on other cds after here death.

I remember when this was released as a cassette single... i had it for years until my music got stolen. It is very rare and i think Karens' solo album would have been great. She was one who could sing anything and there were many rumours about why her solo album wasn't released until much later.. Richard stated in an interview that they both decided not to release it, but i think Richard was afraid Karen would take off and leave him behind.
ron9882 2 years ago
I totally agree!!! There were several songs on it that were sure fire hits!!

CARPENTER, had KAREN lived, would have released it much sooner, they would have come to a point wherethey maybe try some solo years, he was fighting this problem and not producing any music Karen wanted to record some songs, try some..and what came out that studio ................and
Jenot59 2 years ago
KAREN ANNE CARPENTER, part of Carpenters, succesful in young age performing, changes on stage, wishes to stay behind the drums, but finds it very enjoyable up front, cause people liked her voice but also her quick wit and humor, once the attention was on the looks, it started....and Karen did too many unnatural unhealthy things at the same time to keep her weight down, thát , and only thát is the reason why she lost the fight, cause Karen wanted to WIN ánd GAIN!
R.I.P. Loved DRUMMER & VOICE
