somehow i recently developed an allergy to duck eggs. I used to eat them when i was young no problem. Last time i had them i felt feverish and crapped and threw up at the same time in the walmart bathroom. It was horrable. so no duck eggs for me :-(
Yes you are so right Sir....We have ate duck eggs before and they are just as good...The ones we ate the eggs were hugh and made 2-3 chicken eggs, If someone came along and offered us some then we would take them..It seems we are getting more and more anmals here on the farm..It is a good thing....Thank you for this video..
@MrSeriyokuzenyo They are not into flying that much. We trimmed their wings at the begining so they really didnt learn. They are grown out now and the fence keeps them in. They are fat and happy.
Yea, theres nothing wrong with duck eggs, they taste just as good really. A guy I worked with some time ago use to bring in a huge jar of them pickled with onions. They were pretty good. I live in the country but unfortunately in-town, so I can't have chickens or ducks. But they can't stop me from growing a garden.
Had a few of the neighbors ducks move in when I had the farm and believe me my wife was trying to strangle them after a week with no sleep, they took up residence under the bedroom window, (I was working nights) and they SNORE... LOUDLY! She almost hit the house trying to run them over with the pickup !! Oh yes, my rooster used to mount them just the same...and a cat too.
We always had chickens, ducks, and geese roaming around together on our ranch growing up and we never had issues with disease. Great way to keep the variety in meats too.

All those with babies to trade talked only the negatives.......mainly how dirty they are. I just didn't get it??? Is it the fact that they like to be wet and chickens like to be dry? or is their poop messier? I don't have enough room in my chicken house to add ducks, so was going to put them in a dog run with housing, and then let them have the run of the yard?
Its hard keeping ducks with chickens when male ducks try and penetrate chickens. Roosters don't penetrate hens but ducks can causing harm and sometimes death to the hen bumping mad uglies. Just FYI
@LowBuckPrepper With the eggs at room temperature, coat with a thing coating of warm food grade mineral oil. Set the eggs in a carton, and store in the coolest place in you home, cellar, basement, whatever. They will last up to 6 months.
@katzcradul I heard back in the old days the people would coat chicken eggs with hog lard and they would last several months also. Just a matter of keeping oxygen from penetrating the shell.
Coat them with lard? I have never heard of that....it makes sense though.....i would ASSUME that you would still have to keep them relatively cool so they don't spoil....i wonder what temperature you would have to keep eggs at and how long before they are no good to eat
@darksideoffroad The cooler the better has been my experience but you must safeguard against freezing. I've store mine in temps as high as 78 degrees.
Thank you. We miss the obvious. Thats why I subscribe. Now you have to teach us about actually raising them. what do they eat? where do they sleep? I'm motivated. I hate roostes. The only thing worse are peacocks
@laidbackguy1972 Iam only comparing chicken and ducks (male and female) and not a rooster. Roosters are very nosiey. My ducks both male and female are quieter than just my hens. I can hear my hens in the house and I cant hear my ducks.
Great idea! Where do you house your ducks, and in winter do they do ok?? I live in Vermont and there's often several feet of snow on the ground. Thanks for all you do....
That's a great idea! I never would've considered ducks. Thanks for all the great info, keep it up man. Oh and maybe another thing to consider would be guinea fowl....they're great at sounding the alarm and they seem to protect both chickens and ducks....just an idea.
SouthernPrep I watch all of your vids and learn alot. But what do you think is going to happen that will be so bad you have to hide chickens or stockpile body bags?? You say the downfall will result from an Economic Collapse, but it has happened in the past and its happening now and were getting by. This country is to stubborn to allow an event to turn its population into murderous lawless hoards that roam the countryside looking for thier next meal.
@megal0w /watch?v=S1s_hld3JEQ Unlikely. "Collapse" of our fiat currency is not an overnight process. One of the benefits of FIAT currency is that it has NO intrinsic value anyway, and can be backed by whatever is left at the time. Be it oil reserves, real estate, commodities, raw materials, etc. So for us that means GRADUAL hyper inflation and in times of crisis prob more imminent domain type seizure of private assets, rationing, enforced recycling, socialization of resources, etc (cont)
@megal0w (cont) Which drives prices up even more and black markets form. When this whole government program doesn’t go over and the population bucks crime and general law and order tends to go south and that is when road blocks and FEMA mandated City lock down plans go into effect controlling movement in an effort to try and control crime, protests, and other social disorder symptomatic of that type of methodology. Which again drives inflation higher. (cont2)
@megal0w (cont2) While it’s hard to predict what will happen, how people and gov(s) react in each of the phases can drastically chg the outcome and drag it on even longer. So while coll is poss it ‘s highly unlikely it will be due to lack of disc’d oil and more likely partially due to financial constraints on the purch, avail, and rationing of oil, and any E-collpse is likely to be a tiered proc over many yrs. Question is: Is a slow death worse than the repercussions of a sudden one?
@RedSoxBowHunter The economic collapse that Iam refering to is not whats happening now. But when the dollar completly loses all its value. I dont know what will happen so I never provides dates. WROL-without rule of law and Also without ordinary regular life. Either one is why I prep. Seeing things in other countries personal has changed my view on things. Our socitey is very fragile and people can get very ugly. The type of ugly I hope I never see in the US. I dont have all the answers.
@RedSoxBowHunter is it to hard to see that your leaders in the white house are satinistic facist dictator nazis and when there ready to implement there new world order nothing is going to stand in there way, except of course people that can see what they are preparing for and prepare themselfs to take down the evil people for our kids future.the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots every now and agian.......thomas jefferson
@RedSoxBowHunter Did you see the videos of people trampling and injuring each other just this past Black Friday...the day after Thanksgiving, when they ran all the sales at the big box stores? So many people are already so greedy, self centered, and frankly unfeeling, that I think you underestimate what they're capable of...even in broad daylight. Imagine what they'll be like if you cut off their food source, and they really do roam the countryside. Normalcy bias is a dangerous thing.
@RedSoxBowHunter Again, this does not answer my question..yes people will go nuts if they cant get food at big box stores...but what will happen that will be so devastating that no food will exist...that local, state, and federal aid wont be there...I understand what humans are capable of...but what will trigger a colapse that will throw us into the dark ages??
@RedSoxBowHunter EMP, terriost, earthquake and the list goes on. Just like I carry a spare tire many ways to need it, hit a nail, the curb, gets old , or someone slashes it. Alot of ways to need my spare. There is alot of ways for trouble to come but I dont know what so I prepare. My preparations also our hobbies for me, growing a garden, heat with wood, hunting, raising animals etc. Things I do that can help me survive. I will help people prepare I dont force them to. Individual choice.
@RedSoxBowHunter - No one claimed "no food will exist". There will be less food, particularly food tin tins and boxes (groceries - that require industrial agriculture, long-distance transport, manufacturing), but fresh food supplies (particularly local ones) will not shrink as much. Don't think of "no food". Think in terms of less cheap food, fewer groceries and those supplies reducing over time. You plan has to be to switch to local fresh food now. Learn to appreciate it and produce it
how easy are ducks abble to breed compared to chickens, u mentioned ducks eat a bigger veriety of food, do they eat more as well? are they easyer to look after and what sutable food could you feed your ducks on if you had no food storeage ? i hope you can answer these qestions. i know its a tall order but i i want to consider the best WROL egg layer ta m8
This is offtopic but how can i start gardening? I mean with what can i start ? I want to begin with tomatoes, strawberry's and onions. Is this ok to start with?
Dude...I'm thinking Ostrich. One egg equalls like TWO DOZEN Chicken or Duck..
I figure with three ostrich, I got at least a 50% chance of being killed and maimed as well, less chance for the zombies to eat me!!! WIN WIN.. um maybe not.
ducks MIGHT be a safer alternative...but then again, a 40 pound leg has alot going for it.
The island idea is awesome! With a big pond you could really get a colony of some sort, with a drawbridge you can get to the island. That is really innovative!
I got 2 ducks when we got the chickens Saturday. They are with the chickens now but I will be making the area bigger to include a small pool for them. They were not planned but my husband wanted them as soon as he saw them. They are cute and still babies.
Yea, my chickens raise mortal kane when laying LOL. I considered ducks but everyone said don't bother because they leave a worse mess than chickens. Thoughts? I hear mess, I hear compost potential.
i have noticed that alot of people with chickens , complain that they get too many eggs , to consume . I would think that the best thing to do is to dehydrate the eggs that you dont consume , and can be used to feed the chickens , (ducks) and other livestock if needed
Raw eggs are good food for cats and dogs too, makes their fleece shine. Chickens also eat cooked eggs. Just throw the lefover eggs to them and they will have a feast.
Some people might get to the party late and if something happens chickens might not be available if a survival situation but maybe ducks will still be available when the sheeple wake up and try to catch up and buy chickens so their might be a few ducks available when their is no chickens to buy. Most city people that dont know about duck eggs might now have a option if they come to the party late. So ducks will provide eggs. And 3 eggs and bacon and some homemade rolls with fresh jam is great
Duck and goose eggs are richer than chicken eggs. Goose eggs are twice the size of chicken eggs but geese are noisy. But noones gonna sneak up on your place with geese around either.
@vention4wh I have clipped their wings in the past but they have grown out now and they stay in the fenced area they dont fly to well. I think because they are fat and happy.
Wild ducks and geese are a plague in a lot of parks in the northwest. I imagine that won't be a problem too much longer. LOL.
Supposedly ducks consider it an open invitation to join the party if there are other ducks around. In time you might be able to add to your flock that way. It's open season if the duck is on your property (if I understand right). Got a nice silent sling shot or pellet gun handy?
I got a stupid yet serious question. Ducks can fly. Wont they fly away? The chickens wont?

Its hard keeping ducks with chickens when male ducks try and penetrate chickens. Roosters don't penetrate hens but ducks can causing harm and sometimes death to the hen bumping mad uglies. Just FYI
QUESTED 9 months ago
@QUESTED My chickens and ducks get along fine they stick to themselves and dont interact at all.

LeonRFpoa 9 months ago
SP1, do you know of a way to keep the eggs without refridgeration?
LowBuckPrepper 9 months ago
@LowBuckPrepper With the eggs at room temperature, coat with a thing coating of warm food grade mineral oil. Set the eggs in a carton, and store in the coolest place in you home, cellar, basement, whatever. They will last up to 6 months.
katzcradul 9 months ago
@katzcradul I heard back in the old days the people would coat chicken eggs with hog lard and they would last several months also. Just a matter of keeping oxygen from penetrating the shell.
darksideoffroad 9 months ago
@darksideoffroad
Coat them with lard? I have never heard of that....it makes sense though.....i would ASSUME that you would still have to keep them relatively cool so they don't spoil....i wonder what temperature you would have to keep eggs at and how long before they are no good to eat
RichWolframCook 9 months ago
@darksideoffroad That's exactly right. Hog lard can go rancid and I think that why a lot of people switched over to mineral oil.
katzcradul 9 months ago
@katzcradul good info, thanks. Does the ambient temp matter a whole lot?
darksideoffroad 9 months ago
@darksideoffroad The cooler the better has been my experience but you must safeguard against freezing. I've store mine in temps as high as 78 degrees.
katzcradul 9 months ago
Thank you. We miss the obvious. Thats why I subscribe. Now you have to teach us about actually raising them. what do they eat? where do they sleep? I'm motivated. I hate roostes. The only thing worse are peacocks
cernunnos5 9 months ago
thats was a good video sp1, I just ordered chickens now i may order ducks now .... thanks my friend
eastcoastpatriot 9 months ago
@laidbackguy1972 Iam only comparing chicken and ducks (male and female) and not a rooster. Roosters are very nosiey. My ducks both male and female are quieter than just my hens. I can hear my hens in the house and I cant hear my ducks.
southernprepper1 9 months ago
duck eggs are better than chicken eggs
they taste a lot nicer =)
megal0w 9 months ago
Great idea! Where do you house your ducks, and in winter do they do ok?? I live in Vermont and there's often several feet of snow on the ground. Thanks for all you do....
lotusblossomed 9 months ago
@lotusblossomed The ducks stay in the same coup with the chickens.
southernprepper1 9 months ago
That's a great idea! I never would've considered ducks. Thanks for all the great info, keep it up man. Oh and maybe another thing to consider would be guinea fowl....they're great at sounding the alarm and they seem to protect both chickens and ducks....just an idea.
juniorprepper 9 months ago
That's good to know...I've never tried them.
AppalachianFreedom 9 months ago
SouthernPrep I watch all of your vids and learn alot. But what do you think is going to happen that will be so bad you have to hide chickens or stockpile body bags?? You say the downfall will result from an Economic Collapse, but it has happened in the past and its happening now and were getting by. This country is to stubborn to allow an event to turn its population into murderous lawless hoards that roam the countryside looking for thier next meal.
RedSoxBowHunter 9 months ago
@RedSoxBowHunter i would say peak oil is more of a worry than and economic crash
and think of how much of daily life is dependent on oil!
megal0w 9 months ago
@megal0w /watch?v=S1s_hld3JEQ Unlikely. "Collapse" of our fiat currency is not an overnight process. One of the benefits of FIAT currency is that it has NO intrinsic value anyway, and can be backed by whatever is left at the time. Be it oil reserves, real estate, commodities, raw materials, etc. So for us that means GRADUAL hyper inflation and in times of crisis prob more imminent domain type seizure of private assets, rationing, enforced recycling, socialization of resources, etc (cont)
BigBosley 9 months ago
@megal0w (cont) Which drives prices up even more and black markets form. When this whole government program doesn’t go over and the population bucks crime and general law and order tends to go south and that is when road blocks and FEMA mandated City lock down plans go into effect controlling movement in an effort to try and control crime, protests, and other social disorder symptomatic of that type of methodology. Which again drives inflation higher. (cont2)
BigBosley 9 months ago
@megal0w (cont2) While it’s hard to predict what will happen, how people and gov(s) react in each of the phases can drastically chg the outcome and drag it on even longer. So while coll is poss it ‘s highly unlikely it will be due to lack of disc’d oil and more likely partially due to financial constraints on the purch, avail, and rationing of oil, and any E-collpse is likely to be a tiered proc over many yrs. Question is: Is a slow death worse than the repercussions of a sudden one?
BigBosley 9 months ago
@RedSoxBowHunter The economic collapse that Iam refering to is not whats happening now. But when the dollar completly loses all its value. I dont know what will happen so I never provides dates. WROL-without rule of law and Also without ordinary regular life. Either one is why I prep. Seeing things in other countries personal has changed my view on things. Our socitey is very fragile and people can get very ugly. The type of ugly I hope I never see in the US. I dont have all the answers.
southernprepper1 9 months ago
@RedSoxBowHunter is it to hard to see that your leaders in the white house are satinistic facist dictator nazis and when there ready to implement there new world order nothing is going to stand in there way, except of course people that can see what they are preparing for and prepare themselfs to take down the evil people for our kids future.the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots every now and agian.......thomas jefferson
18wheeler76 9 months ago
@RedSoxBowHunter Did you see the videos of people trampling and injuring each other just this past Black Friday...the day after Thanksgiving, when they ran all the sales at the big box stores? So many people are already so greedy, self centered, and frankly unfeeling, that I think you underestimate what they're capable of...even in broad daylight. Imagine what they'll be like if you cut off their food source, and they really do roam the countryside. Normalcy bias is a dangerous thing.
katzcradul 9 months ago
@RedSoxBowHunter Again, this does not answer my question..yes people will go nuts if they cant get food at big box stores...but what will happen that will be so devastating that no food will exist...that local, state, and federal aid wont be there...I understand what humans are capable of...but what will trigger a colapse that will throw us into the dark ages??
RedSoxBowHunter 9 months ago
@RedSoxBowHunter EMP, terriost, earthquake and the list goes on. Just like I carry a spare tire many ways to need it, hit a nail, the curb, gets old , or someone slashes it. Alot of ways to need my spare. There is alot of ways for trouble to come but I dont know what so I prepare. My preparations also our hobbies for me, growing a garden, heat with wood, hunting, raising animals etc. Things I do that can help me survive. I will help people prepare I dont force them to. Individual choice.
southernprepper1 9 months ago
@RedSoxBowHunter i think an emp would be the worst.either cme or nuclear.then everything stops.
moneypit1997 9 months ago
@RedSoxBowHunter - No one claimed "no food will exist". There will be less food, particularly food tin tins and boxes (groceries - that require industrial agriculture, long-distance transport, manufacturing), but fresh food supplies (particularly local ones) will not shrink as much. Don't think of "no food". Think in terms of less cheap food, fewer groceries and those supplies reducing over time. You plan has to be to switch to local fresh food now. Learn to appreciate it and produce it

Duck meat is a little greasy i think.

Yea, my chickens raise mortal kane when laying LOL. I considered ducks but everyone said don't bother because they leave a worse mess than chickens. Thoughts? I hear mess, I hear compost potential.

Would a man made small pond be a viable option for ducks?
itzcoldghost 9 months ago
@itzcoldghost yes anything where they can get in and get wet
southernprepper1 9 months ago
i have noticed that alot of people with chickens , complain that they get too many eggs , to consume . I would think that the best thing to do is to dehydrate the eggs that you dont consume , and can be used to feed the chickens , (ducks) and other livestock if needed
tracycolorado 9 months ago
@tracycolorado
Raw eggs are good food for cats and dogs too, makes their fleece shine. Chickens also eat cooked eggs. Just throw the lefover eggs to them and they will have a feast.
JustFresh099 9 months ago
Some people might get to the party late and if something happens chickens might not be available if a survival situation but maybe ducks will still be available when the sheeple wake up and try to catch up and buy chickens so their might be a few ducks available when their is no chickens to buy. Most city people that dont know about duck eggs might now have a option if they come to the party late. So ducks will provide eggs. And 3 eggs and bacon and some homemade rolls with fresh jam is great
southernprepper1 9 months ago
Duck and goose eggs are richer than chicken eggs. Goose eggs are twice the size of chicken eggs but geese are noisy. But noones gonna sneak up on your place with geese around either.
tooltym1 9 months ago
great :D ive never really thaught of that, duck eggs make really good egg custards too if you fancy having a go at them :)

Do you clip the duck wings?
vention4wh 9 months ago
@vention4wh I have clipped their wings in the past but they have grown out now and they stay in the fenced area they dont fly to well. I think because they are fat and happy.
southernprepper1 9 months ago 2
@southernprepper1
