The 2010 meteorological year, which ended on 30 November, was the warmest in NASA’s 130-year record, data posted by the agency today shows. Over the oceans as well as on land, the average global temperature for the 12-month period that began last December was 14.65˚C.
The 2010 meteorological year was slightly warmer than the previous warmest year, the 2005 calendar year, when the average temperature was 14.53˚C.

nonsense enddogmanow - YOU are the toxic liar, and the blatantly dishonest climate alarmist -probably in the pay of the oil companies which are making such massive profits out of misguided global warming policies and taxation.
The satellite data also show warming, but not as much as the surface measurements show. I've heard it claimed that the stratosphere is cooling, and that the satellites measure both the stratosphere and troposphere together. Therefore the heating in the troposphere is partly masked in the satellite data.
People are still massaging the most reliable data we have (UAH and RSS satellite data). It's only 30yrs long, which is nothing, barely a blip compared to ice core proxy data going back over 400,000 years.
Our other instrumental measurements (120+ yrs) come from surface temperature stations that cities have built up around. Temperature cycles average a few hundred years and vary a great deal naturally within that time.
So you're right. The validity of our data is extremely debatable.
The key question is what is driving the most recent rise in temperatures, i.e. the last 50 yrs or so.
Viewing all cycles as rhythmic is not helpful unless the drivers are understood. The drivers that produced earlier changes need not be the main ones at work today. Solar forcing does not explain warming since 1985, but CO2 does. Even Christy admits CO2 is a driver of warming, though he has different ideas to most climatologists as to its role in concert with other drivers.
There is a multitude of driving forces. The sun, water vapor and many other factors contribute much more to keeping heat on Earth than CO2. Solar forcing ALONE cannot explain temperature any more than CO2 alone can. CO2 only slows down the rate of some of the frequencies of heat radiating back into space.
We don't understand all of the drivers yet. We do know that drastic temperature change has happened quickly in the past, before human intervention. We don't know why.
We seem to be in general agreement. But the thing about CO2 is not its influence per se, but the fact that it is steadily increasing. Just how this will change things is always going to be difficult to predict, but change things it will. If it becomes part of +ve feedback systems we will be in deep shit, as things could change a lot. Any change, any different future stasis will probably not suit us. We evolved and populated the planet in accord with recent historical conditions.
Notwithstanding the correction of some US weather station data, 2005 remains the hottest year globally. I suspect the reason he wanted to dodge backing up his claim that it's cooled since 1998 is to avoid being pinned down on this. Also he would have to justify starting a trend line in 1998, an atypical year due to the record el nino conditions that released huge amounts of heat from the Pacific.
Start your trend line in 1997 or 1999 and you see an upward slope.
If you are cherry picking, quoting small sets of data, then yes, starting from 1998, the mean global temperature has gone down.
Prof. Pilmer approached this argument in the wrong way. He should have said, "Most of what you hear are small cherry picked subsets of data. If you cherry pick instead of looking at all of the available data, you can show anything you want, be it global cooling or global warming. But if you look at everything, you see constant, dynamic change."
That would be another way of avoiding answering a specific question.
He makes an issue about the hottest temperatures being in the 1920s-40s IN PARTS THE US! Why does this matter if we are talking about GLOBAL warming? Why bring it up unless you just want to muddy the waters?
The focus should be on estimates of mean global temperatures. If these peaked in the 1930s it would be relevant.
He didn't back up his claim that temps peaked in 1998, but accused Jones of "trying to predict the future".
The ONLY global temperature data is from satellites. This means we really only have global temperature data for the past 30 years.
The other temperature readings are localized, surface temperature readings. There are very few organizations that maintain these, and NASA GISS in the US is one of them, and one of the largest.
Such localized surface temperature data has often been used to show global warming, but many numbers have been shown to be embarrassingly unreliable.
