Mabou Mines have done some good theater. But anyone who knows the members of the company knows that they are bitter, talented, non-teachers who live on sour grapes.
Yeah, why not? Breuer's adaptation underscores the ideas of patriarchy and the irony of the powerful male in the Victorian era. It breathes life into a play that, in many ways, has become antiquated to our society. The message is certainly there, but Breuer has infused comedy in an attempt at reminding audiences why the text was so powerful and how society has evolved in terms of equality. When she walks out at the end, it doesn't resonate with audiences as much anymore.
Not a very profound reply, but I suppose one can construe the staging as a "gimmick". Haha. Directors are given so few liberties anymore due to royalty infringements and the like. I applaud MM for finding an inventive way of refreshing a (somewhat) dated script.
