This song is the tune that says "never say die" and "never give up". And does so in the most funky and tough way imaginable. Whenever I think that I'm getting beat up and rocked by life I listen to this and remember that I can take anything life's got to throw, and even the toughest times have a glorious purpose, and reward waiting for those who stick it out! . So.... let the glory continue. Rock on !!!
@depailler80 All I am saying is...... What you are seeing, is the very moment this song was recorded; it is what you hear on the record. And... it sounds just a little bit different that the vinyl version, because TV engineers compresses it, and charge the EQ usually.
New York based Jazz, 1976 to 1983...one of the golden eras of this truly American art. C Mangione along with C Corea, H Hancock, S Clarke, Weather Report, G Benson, Manhattan Transfer and a host of others were one of the cornerstones of music for its day.
@ulicesflores Oh yes! These were the good days! There was such a word as Relax, and liesure in their fullest compliment to such great music of Mangione and Alpert!
@ASRomaAURIAZUL There's a solo in that song? I remember listening to that song but I don't remember ever hearing a sax solo in it or a guitar solo for that matter.
i was looking for a video of this melody, to see if it could give me an insight on how to play the guitar part.. I find absolutely amazing the funky guitar rhythm.. but the guitarist never appears on the foreground on the video! It's unbelievable, given that the guitar provides the driving rhythm.... if someone have a tab or a music sheet, i would be very grateful....
I've been a Mangione fan since '78 when feels so good came out. I love this song, but it's got bittersweet memories for me. A few months before this song came out, a woman that I loved with all my heart and soul broke off our relationship, and I was going through the worst part of the pain when this song came out. I was over the denial stage and reality had set in. This song was played constantly then. Oh well, better bittersweet memories, than no memories.
I'm trying to find a Mexican made Chuck Mangione fart video. It's called "El Chucko Farto" It's been banned in the USA due to copyright infringment. "Chucko Farto" was orignally a game show produced by Chuck Woolery in Bolivia.
Winter of 1980... Lake Placid... This is where the decisive battle of the COLD WAR was fought and won. ON ICE!!! When it was over... We all celebrated to this tune. Fuck Yeah! USA! USA! USA!
Something I've always wondered about Flugelhorn. Since the lead pipe enters the first valve and the bell exit is on the third which is backwards from the trumpet, is the fingering backwards too? If not, why not?
That would account for both being in the key of Bb but still it seems the fingering would be backwards. Oh well, as long as they do work the same, what ever.
I'm about to get a Couesnon Flugel. The guy is out of town right now and in another city besides. I'm hoping next weekend we can hook up.
@SotR59 As far as the key and the fingering of the flugelhorn are concerned, It's not ultimately important where in the middle of the total pipe length the valves are connected, just so the valves are connected together as a group with their own associated three valve pipes. The total pipe length is what is important to the key, and no, the fingering is the same.
Now, if you you flipped the valves and their 3 associated pipes as a group around 180 degrees, THEN you'd have learn new fingering
Amen sis, this fusion of jazz and funk filled in the gaps that less adventurious artist simply could not fill. My sister is one hell of a trumpet player and keyboardist who taught me to understand the true passion of good music, ala Mangione, and other clasic bands of course. The melody and rythem are equal in this song, very rare indeed!
@Progrose Hey....how's my little brother? If it had not been for Chuck Mangione, The Average White band and Grover Washington we would have missed out on the more serious genre's of music. The Beatles and Beach Boys were great but not the only fish in a bowl of various types of fishes.
My favorite jam by him! My Dad was a trumpet player his whole life, very well known in the Tejano music industry. He loved Chuck's music. Thanks for posting....this kinda stuff brings back great memories of time spent with my Dad may he Rest in Peace. Love n Miss ya Daddy.
@LordTetsuoShima I'm going to go out on a limb and say chuck did a lot of drugs in his day. The look on his face there was of pure joy. Don't be hatin on his high. =)

@analyzingfunny Actually I run a Mac Book Pro, thank you very much. Something I've always wondered about Flugelhorn. Since the lead pipe enters the first valve and the bell exit is on the third which is backwards from the trumpet, is the fingering backwards too? If not, why not?
SotR59 1 year ago
@SotR59
A: Because the total pipe distance, from beginning of the leadpipe to the end of the bell, of both instruments is the same distance.
DancingSpiderman 1 year ago
@DancingSpiderman
That would account for both being in the key of Bb but still it seems the fingering would be backwards. Oh well, as long as they do work the same, what ever.
