I am merely making fun of their lack of creativity. Both in terms of their slogan and their location as well. I think it's extremely funny. Sorry - have the atheists been making fun of religious people so much they have forgotten that there is freedom for religious people to laugh at secularists? Why so precious? Get a sense of humour.
I really did not understand this video. I never agreed with Descartes' statement, but I don't see what's wrong with them using it. I also don't understand why it's significant to use a church. Churches are basically fancy auditoriums. It seems like a perfect place. Was the uploader pointing out an actual failure, or doing a parody of critics of the freethinkers?
I don't have any issue re-purposing a church, although, I do see the humor the in it! There are songs that I like that many would find questionable that I would like, however, the understanding and/or appreciation of a sentiment does not require acceptance of that sentiment. So, whether the target is real or imagined I can still appreciate the emotional tone. I just don't accept claims of truth (non-subjective statements) on the back of feeling.
Plus, "Descartes" is not in a grave. Remember, the substance of "Descartes" is not his body. It is his soul. So I guess he's laughing his soul's ass off.
the absurdity aside ... they stole Descartes' quote, Hawthorne's scarlet letter "A", Auguste Rodin's statue and the "freeok" type looks like it infringes on "facebook"'s type and they want to be portrayed as free thinkers?
Hey guys this doesn't seem possible from nature. You forgot chance tells us anything is possible by nature.Chance tells us if we see a computer on the ground in mars and no one was around it came into being by chance. No circular reasoning here ;).
@95TurboSol Well you didn't say gathering for freethought "lol". You said, "Get together with only people you agree with". I do presume all who goes to church agree on the existence of Jesus? Or am I wrong?
@BjornSeverinLarsen Yeah so, This is an atheist "free thought" convention, if a church called itself "free thought church" and only invited speakers that agree with their views I would have the same criticism. If Atheists want to have a convention, great, just pick a less oxymoronic name lol or I'll tease it :)
@BjornSeverinLarsen No, I would have free thinking people, gathered to converse free thought. The problem is that they invite ONLY atheists to their convention and says its for free thought lol, see the irony? Irony #1 "Atheist free thinkers" free thought means you challenge different views freely, Atheist pertains to one view about reality. Irony #2 If it were just a name it would be no big deal, but they finish it off by inviting only people of one particular view!
@95TurboSol I still don't see the irony. You don't think they are challeging eachother views? I hope you do know, that the term atheist only describes what they are not - not what they are. It is not an atheist convention. It is a sceptics convention. That means, that if any irony should be found, it should be in the sceptics part, not the atheist. To say the atheism describes anyone is like saying your nonbelieve in unicorns describes you.
@BjornSeverinLarsen All the speakers are atheist, that was my point, I doubt they will be defending theistic ideas! If it's a skeptics convention then great, I'm a skeptic of atheistic worldviews, why not invite a theistic skeptic? Also the definition of Atheism you use is not in any philosophy dictionary, nor websters or any other I've ever looked at, if that's your personal definition then fine, but the way I'm using it is the way it's always been used.
@95TurboSol The definition of atheism is a lack of belief - it is a - theist. To be a sceptic you need to be ready to examine all relevant evidence and value it on its merrits. To find out if you are a sceptic you could ask yourself, "what would it take for me to stop believing in God?". A sceptic would say, if the evidence presented does not support the existence of God, I would stop believing. If you say, nothing will ever change my mind, then you are not a sceptic.
@BjornSeverinLarsen I agree, and I think they should invite differing views to speak if they are truely free thinkers, but it's their convention not mine. I don't want to rehash the old definition of atheism debate other than to say that definition is not the standard definition from any dictionary, and leads to absurdities.
@95TurboSol I don't quite understand your differing veiws comment. This free thought conventions is for sceptics - however there are many sorts of sceptics. Conservatives, liberals etc. The theistic og atheistic diversion is not the only that creates differing views on things.
"Freethinking" is nothing but a neat slogan, something to rally around.
If I engage in "free" thinking, and yet reach radically different conclusions - I am then held in derision for not going along with the group in their rejection of God.
Atheists seek control over people's minds just as much as any other radical ideological group.
Personally I am skeptical of my own apprehension of "evidences", and my position regarding the qualification of truth
@FillTheirVoid "seek control over people's mind" well then that could be said about any group really. It is all a negotiation about the narrative, who has the power to define what is truth and so on. I however find it anoying when the term atheism is used as something meaningfull. Buddhists are usually also atheists and hindus are atheistic towards the abrahamic God concept. So atm the narrative about atheism is not what I think it should be, so I object when it is used in a "wrong" way.
@FillTheirVoid BTW I agree on that "Freethinking" is a slogan. No human in this world is truely freethinkers. We are all defined by the knowledge we grew up in and our cognitive patterns usually follows the pattern established when we where about 3 years old. However I do believe that this group fancy themselves as more free thinking than theists and I can only agree with them.
I don't mean to be snide, but what worldviews are you talking about? There are no atheist 'worldviews', only (as Bjorn said), a lack of belief in a particlarly popular human-made concept. There aren't 'commandments' or any particular rule book. It's not a clubhouse, you know.
@95TurboSol "Atheist freethinkers lol. Get together with only people you agree with, is that how free thinking works?"
No. That's how church works. Rather than what you presume is merely an intellectual circle-jerk of group affirmation, events (such as the upcoming Reason Rally in Washington DC this March 24) are also about getting politically organized. Jews have legal sway, gays have legal sway, and though atheists have the numbers to, they do not; no more "churchy" than Democrats meeting.
@TheCartesianTheist Hey CT,can you make a video with regards to Christianity and evolution where you could say about Asa Gray , Ronald Fischer and other briliant biologists who were Christians.
@AgApE010 This is more than Nietzsche on a Church bulletin, "The Thinker was modeled in 1880 – 1882 as part of a commission by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris to sculpt a monumental door based on The Divine Comedy of Dante called THE GATES OF HELL." lol
What is the significance of them meeting in a Church? Did they pray before the convention? Did they have communion half way through?
Oh well, Cartesian Theist oozes too much smugness to consider these things before he posts a video.
