  • The old span was still well built if it was 6 feet taller it would still be in good condition

Old span 8 feet 65 feet elevated section

New span 30 feet 80 feet elevated section

  • Great video, I dunno how I missed this video for so long! Can't wait to someday see a video of both spans, once the eastbound span of the new Twin Spans Causeway is finished. I wonder when it is scheduled to be finished anyway, and wonder if the new eastbound span is open to traffic yet.....

  • @prfsnlwannabe

Thank you. It's easy to miss some of my videos, as I post them so often. :-)

When both will be open, I'm not sure. That's a good query, though. Google might help with that.

  • You Picked two of his greatest songs :)

  • @AudiR10Guy

Can't ever go wrong with MJ.

  • i was always afraid of the old twin spans :]

    lol

  • @im4florida

I can understand, Geoff. The old Twin Spans were very, very narrow.

  • awesome , ive been waiting for this highway post for a very long time , i bet that was a fun drive over the longest bridge in the usa , thanks bryant ,

  • Yeah, this was a fun drive, indeed.

  • nice clip. What idiot set the speed limit at 45mph? that is pretty pathetic for any Interstate

  • Thanks.

I know. When I first drove over it, when my cousin and VT were playing at the Superdome, signs read, "Speed destroys bridge" (or something like that).

This bridge was harder-hit by Katrina than the eastbound bridge. It's to be closed, and traffic will be moved to the old eastbound bridge, until the new Twin Spans are fully operational.

The speed limit is hardly observed, if ever.

  • @vbdenny

They DOT had to piece the bridge back together using metal sections that had to be fabricated to fit into the gaps left by the storm. The IDIOTS as you say were the moron 18 wheeler drivers who wouldn't obey this speed limit and caused horrendous delays because DOT had to inspect this bridge daily for damage.

I just love the ignorance of people from around the country...maybe take a step outside of getting your news from the networks and do some real investigating on what happened here

  • 45 mph! 70kph.. no wonder people were passing you! how slow and boring! But i guess it is construction and man, that bridge looks old and dodgy!

  • We weren't going that slow. We were going about 60 or 65.

Yeah, the bridge is old. It also was hard-hit by Hurrican Katrina.

  • @kevrosmith im always afraid when i ride that bridge

THAT'S WHY I TAKE THE CAUSEWAY...

    buh-dump....buh-dump......buh-dump......buh-bump!!

  • Nice progress on the new span :)

When is it to be completed?

  • Not exactly sure, but it shouldn't be too much longer.

  • Great job! I drove over this when I went out west in June. An awesome sight!

  • Thanks!

Yeah, they're doing a great job reconstructing this freeway bridge.
