If you just look at the way his shirt moves as he plays, it's kind of a give-away on this video being sped up to an extent... 15% or so, so people wouldn't notice it.
It sounds sped up by 15 - 20%. So, people won't notice much... but the movement of his shirt and of his head at bits of this performance is kind of telling.
@driemaaldrommels yes i agree so if somenone played twice faster than he does he would be applauded? its just speed for speed sake i prefer argerich or sokolov rendition, thats music
This is not a sped up bullshit. Sorry to tell you, but no matter what you think, unfortunately for yourself and no matter how painful, this is REAL... You may like it or hate it but try to face it
I'm puzzled. not have the spirit of Prokofiev, but how to interpret can be discussed.
I like the tempo that takes the piece, as in the interpretation of Gould, but at other times is less clear, probably because the speed, and not for lack of technique.
@gipehache Soyez modeste: ridicule pour vous, OK.
Mais si cette vision du precipitato a les défauts de ses qualités, au moins elle a de la gueule (on ne peut en dire autant de toutes les autres); et si l'on peut regretter que certains détails soient un peu noyés, il y a quand-même de fantastiques coups de patte collant parfaitement à l'esprit de l'oeuvre;
Okay, so it completely sucks musically. But I give the guy props for being a BEAST!!! HOLY CRAP, HOW CAN A MORTAL MOVE THEIR HANDS SO UNGODLY FAST!!!. Seriously. It's pretty f*cked up.
Congratz on being the fastest rendition I've ever seen of this piece...but I believe to get the full effect of the piece it needs to be taken way slower. Well done nevertheless.
Also, theFilantrop7, referring to people as wannabes is reasonably bitter behaviour in itself.
I would hate to think that people might get the impression that classical musicians have nothing better to do than to see all of life as a competition.
Because in general they usually too busy practicing.
Very interesting comments coming from ever lasting bunch of frustrated wannabes. Just bear in mind the next time you let your venim flow that no matter how much it displeases you this is one of the most spectacular and transcendental virtuoso performances ever.
Velocity for its own sake that leaves no room for clarity, excitement or genuine momentum. The musical fabric is torn apart by a vicious whirlwind that destroys all in its wake.
"Jamaican Rhumba "slightly slowed down, played by someone who keeps forgetting the tune, but makes up for it by bashing the bass! I couldn't do better myself; it's going straight to my Comic Favorits,
Arguably this is Prokofiev reincarnated. Listen the way he plays his own 3rd Concerto: rushed, flashy and with no attention to the so called "meaningful details" that to some are abundant here for whatever obscure reason.
So let's construct a new theory of music based on one interpretation a composer gave one of his pieces that ignores subtlety and musicality in favor of show off tempos. What idiocy. Comparing this to Sokolov/Gould/Richter/Horowitz is like comparing an Evel Knievel stunt to a performance of Hamlet...lots of fireworks but little or no recognizable content here. Shame to waste such and obviously brilliant technique on such a silly exercise imho.
My gosh, the things that some people do just to make an impression! And predictably, the pianist managed to amaze some people, based on some comments here. But come on, there is no music in what he did - it was all noise. It didn't even have any recognizable rhythm. Poor Prokofiev! What a way to be disrespected as a composer. If this were done as a joke, it was in poor taste..
What I would call a "stellar technique", there is surely powerful brains behind, with a set structure, onomatopaeic effect and music having almost a life on its own.
And yes,you people, if you have a smallest, scantest and most elementary knowledge of human body movements and you hear, don't you, what is no doubt inaltered sound that fits the image besides, you know it's a real stuff.
it's a joke obviously. the guy can't possibly think this a valid interpretation. he does it cuz he can. it's impressive to see how fast he moves but i wouldn't ever want to listen to this version without the vid.
This performance doesnt seemed altered, that guy is just a speed demon, however, its actually possible to play at that speed but you will get major arthritis years later.
Rage against the machine slash a true slaughterhouse. This is faster than Cziffra's and he gets ALL the notes right which is kinda unbelievable.Highest respects to the pianist.
I agree with getitstraight,it should rather not be played this way,but nevertheless the guy is brilliant in doing a highly freeky stunt number. He should consider slowing it largely down for, although I don't believe in meaningful details,it could be beneficial. If this performance might not be a milestone accomplishment it is something to be definitely highlighted, because no matter what one can say about it,it pisses the hell out off the average classical music consumer and is simply brilliant.
It is more visionnary and provocative in a wicked Prokofiev show off style, historically speaking, although Sokolov has other undeniable upper shelf qualities this one lacks. Both are highly charismatic but as an overall case there is no point whatsoever to compare them. Clearly nobody, Freddy Kempf included, has dared to play it this way, since the speed is a major qualitative factor here, meaning insanely fast YET close to the absolute technical mastery.
Other extreme.Way to slow, the so called faster version clearly artificially sped up a tone or so,one wonders what for.The professional sound recording and possibly treatment makes a huge difference. Also, besides that we might be falling into a 'famous brand name vs.newcomer syndrome'trap, it produces no energetic shockwave effect this one does and for that very reason pales in comparison on a first sight,WAIT, even though the music stands up defending itself in some hypnotic way in both cases.
I ve never dreamt such a speed possible.I am working on Sonata No 7 myself but cannot get anywhere nearly close enough to this. I am not certain however that this kind of approach serves well the music itself.
It is not a fog, it s scientific. This guys hands are simply faster than most people's brains. Although not exactly to my musical taste this recording is a truly great accomplishment.
If this is genuine, I can only say the pianist summons all his technique to slaughter the piece. It is marked "precipitato", not prestissimo. This version is so fast, that most meaningful detail is lost in a cacophonous fog of notes. It isn't as much an interpretation as a frenetic race to the finish line. Sorry, but this isn't a contender at all.

Is music a war?
We can't expect to be told we're brilliant all the time. How would we develop any kind of humility?
The difference here is that this is a just a more immediate means of delivering criticism.
Using Trotsky's words wont make me eat mine.
There are two sides to a war. Is it your goal to fight or your goal to win?
In music, will your fight be with life, or with people you see as less righteous than yourself?

I think you'll find it flows both ways.
If others don't have the right to criticize then why do you have the right to praise?
