This longer duet makes sense... later when Carmen enters Escamillo says to Don Jose "Nous sommes manche a manche (We are now even)". If you skip the part where Escamillo gives up his knife, this line makes no sense (and is therefore sometimes changed to "je faire ma rivanche (I will take my revenge)".

But, in this day of 3 hour union performance rules, cuts abound.

Exactly. I hate it when they cut it, especially because the full duet gives such a good portrayal of Escamillo's character.
