sorry to hear about death of your rat, so cute. How old was he/she when it died?do you know why it died?Just picked up two baby dumbo rats, they are very shy atm.
I love the ears! Love rats, wished they lived longer. Ive owned rats for over 7 years now, I finally got my first Dumbo Rat. rats arent popular enough around here to find breeders, but I am happy to get mine from the Pet Store, because Im happy knowing that I probably rescued the little dears from being eaten by some ugly snake.
@morgn15jonaslove that particular one i got from a breeder in colorado springs, about two hours from me. i recommend looking into your local breeders by googling them and seeing who pops up. make sure they are legitimate! you can always ask on here if you need help, but google "goosemoose pet forum" it's a great place for help too. and don't forget to check your local animal shelters! more often than not, they have rats, just give them a try!
@sambible omg omg omg, seriously i can not find a breeder that isnt booked up, i live in ny, and my son and i want two baby females so they grow to us, im afraid if i get them when they are older they will not care for us as they would if we got them as babies,
@warrior01094 congrats! it depends on what you're looking for. males tend to be a lot more chill, lazy, they are bigger, fatter, sometimes a bit greasier, but overall very laid back. females are more high strung, hyper, energetic, curious, great for teaching tricks! they tend to be cleaner, less greasy, but are definitely a handful! females truly require more out-of-cage play time than males. but either way, i'm sure you'll love what you pick!
@sambible That comment really helped as I thought our rats (2 females) was sort of individual and not normal to be that energetic so thanks :D Also one of our rats constantly wrestles the other one, like puts her on her back and grooms her type thing. Is that normal aswell? Thanks!
@xXCH1MPXx the one rat fighting the other putting her in her place and grooming her is totally normal, it just means she's the obvious alpha female of the two. as long as she isn't OVERLY aggressive in wrestling her cagemate, because that can be a problem. but you can always work on that by spending more time with the both of them, and more quality time with her specifically, giving her treats and trick training her, to feel more purposeful/at ease/calm/trusting etc
@xXCH1MPXx one of my rats used to do that, and she turned out to be too aggressive to be with a cagemate, even with a bunch of work and training.. so. let me know if you need help training or working with her if it's an aggression issue. hopefully it's not! but if you have any other rat/animal related questions... ask away! hope that helps :3
@bombmonster123 yay! i hope you get as much enjoyment out of your rat as i did from mine :3 take good care of your new little friend, i'm sure he has a great home (:
I got two male dumbo rats about a month ago and they are only four months now but when I first got them they were fighting a respiratory infection. Luckily they made it through with the medicine the vet gave them. They are so adorable. :) and I am very happy with them. They are so intelligent.
I had a dumbo "Megatron" that only made it about 6 days with me and it was heartbreaking. He developed a respiratory infection at the breeders and by the time I got him from Petsmart it was too late. :(
@reid6909 i'm sorry ): i really recommend getting your next rats from a well-known breeder to avoid health issues like those at petsmart. the way they treat their animals is just appalling and the conditions the animals live in result in numerous health issues. if you're not wanting to buy from a rat breeder, i would (as my own personal first choice) go to a few local animal shelters and see what rats look like they could use a good home! better luck with your future rats :3
@shadow135222 i'm kind of confused what you're asking, i never said i prefer one over the other. but if you're referring to not buying from petsmart i have very valid reasons. yes it's unfortunate that they live in poor conditions and develop several health problems, but by buying from petsmart you only increase their demand to replace the rats you've taken with new ones who will get sick as well. supply and demand. to them rats are money, not animals. that's why i prefer the shelter or breeder.
I work at PetSmart and that's not how we (at out our store, at least) think at all. Don't generalize about people. It makes you look unintelligent. In fact, at this moment, we saw that a rat in one of our cages had a respiratory infection and we are using our own funds to give it medicine and try to nurse it back to health in our "sick room". We care about animals and have a 14 day guarantee on every single one.
@BlatantStares0714 i'm not unintelligent on the matter. the fact that your ONE store out of their over 1000 stores treats animals differently makes you a rare exception. yes you may care for them properly, but that does not change the fact that to the higher employees who control the entire business of petsmart, animals are a commodity. i challenge you to find out where your rats come from. what condition the breeder raises them in before you get them. petsmart invests in the cheapest.....
@BlatantStares0714 resources so they can make the biggest profit. it's business. to a mass producing company, rats are business. animals are money. i'm glad you can treat your animals at your store with care, but you are an EXCEPTION. even if a few more stores treat their animals as you do, that is such a small percentage of stores. i guarantee you, from what i have seen, the research i've done, petsmart does not think of animals as anything higher. and tbh, a 14 day guarantee is pathetic.
@BlatantStares0714 and by the way... the few main reasons rats get respiratory infections is because either they are living in unsanitary conditions or in wood shavings (which rats should not live in as it has a lot of dust), because they have been bred in substandard conditions and it does not get treated (which all petsmart stores buy from rat-mills) making the rat more susceptible to future infections, or a cagemate has spread the infection to them from one of the previous reasons.
@BlatantStares0714 there is NO reason any of your stores or any of the other stores rats should ever get a URI. if petsmart bought from quality breeders and took proper care of their animals, none of them would get as sick as they do as often as they do. not to mention, buying petsmart animals is a waste of time because you have to spend so much energy retraining an animal how to get used to people because it has been deprived of the necessary amount of human attention.
@sambible I understand and agree with a lot of what you're saying, because you do have valid points. And I specifically put the disclaimer about my store, because I know I can't speak for all of them. I do get it, the higher ups are all about the money, but myself and fellow employees actually care about the animals. We can't control what goes on before the rats get to us, but we can damn well treat all our animals well once they do get to us. I can personally say that I take time out
@sambible of my work day so that I can play with the rats and I know several others that do the same, because we know they are extremely social. I inform buyers who come in that I won't sell the rats alone and will only sell them in pairs, because I know that they need a companion. The so called "rat cages" we sell, I make sure to tell people that they are too small to house them and point them in the direction of the better suited cages. It sucks that I can't do more.
@sambible I just hate being associated with other people who work at pet stores that don't actually care about the animals. I and my fellow co-workers are not those kind of PetSmart employees. I never claimed that PetSmart higher ups are Godsends or that they have the best policies and procedures - I wish I could do more about it. Also, I did not say that you are unintelligent in this matter (because you clearly are not), I said making generalizations makes you look unintelligent.
@BlatantStares0714 I hope this isn't a personal question, but what PetSmart do you work at??? My local PetSmart has healthy looking animals and I was told by an employee that they are stricter than most pet shops. They even refuse to sell mice as snake food at the PetSmart I go to. I'm not asking this question to find out where you live, I'm just curious.
@cheacky2 I won't say the exact store number but it's one in Texas, near Houston. We don't sell mice as feeders either and I purposely try to trick people into admitting they are for feeders by trying to act nice and say, "So, what are you feeding?" Because people still try to buy them as feeders and trick the employees into selling them..
@shadow135222 If you buy from a pet shop you helping the pet store. Thats why you pick breeders. And rats from breeders get handled and are alot more tame.
@Leanneldok21 exactly, the attention and love a breeder gives to every rat they breed is shown in the demeanor of the rats. they get handled hours a day, are fed REAL nutritional diets, and are bred to be sociable and good pets. pet store animals don't get this attention, making them afraid of humans, more feisty, and live shorter. also when you buy from a breeder you get into a whole community of people who show you the best ways to raise and train your rats. completely agree with you!
@wolfxlordx99 get her to a vet right away! that's an upper respiratory infection, those can develop into yucky things like inner ear infections if they aren't treated soon enough. one of my rats had a URI that spread into her inner ear and left her with a permanently crooked head ): cute, but she always walks funny now. my advice: don't use any sort of wood chip bedding and get her to a vet! good luck, let me know how it goes! (:
@sambible TY SO MUCH!!! i could find any one that would actually respond ALSO can you make a video on how to get a rat accustom to you/not afraid of you?
@wolfxlordx99 i'm 100% sure petsmart was using bad bedding, so that's definitely why it's started. but if you're using any wood chippings as bedding that will only make the URI worse. make sure you're using like newspaper, felt, or fabric.. something like that. i can make a video but i don't have ratties anymore! i moved into an apt that doesn't allow pets ): my rat breeder friend has my girls now, but i can make a video of just me talking lol giving suggestions. idk tell me if you want!
@sambible i had the same problem, and i thought she counden't breath, so i took her to a vet, and she recieved antibiotics and now she has recoverd, altough giving a rat antibiotics is a terrible thing to do, cause she doesn't like it...
unfortunately for murphie she showed no symptoms of distress until after her intestines had ruptured, and it just so happened that she started showing these signs incredibly late at night and on a weekend as well ):
i've had to give my other rats oral antibiotics for URIs and they absolutely detest it. makes me feel like such a bad person! lol, but i'm glad you have a healthy rat now :3
@wolfxlordx99 They only drawback of keeping pet rats are they all are born with Mycoplasma Pulmonis (Myco) - symptoms are neezing, red porphyrin stains around their eyes and nose. Take them to the vet immediately and ask to give them a combination of Doxycyline and Baytril - the vet must administer it by mouth! Once day for one week should be fine! Myco is the number one killer of pet rats. For any medical advice check in on THE DAPPER RAT website.
@wolfxlordx99 shes probably fine, if you just got her shes sneezing because shes getting used to her new home. when i got my 2 rats they were sneezing a good week and then stopped. if youre worried though keep an eye on them. also since you posted this 2 months ago hopefully they turned out ok lol
She's so adorable. I just want to pick her up and give her kisses lol. She kinda looks like my 6 week old Dumbo, but yours has that cute little white streak on her head.
@xdx82 it depends on where you live. i would definitely check out any animal shelters near you first and see if there are any rats that tickle your fancy there, otherwise do a search for local rat breeders and see what pops up. good luck! let me know if you have any more questions (:
@sarahmfjayne awww i hope you get as much joy from having theses furry little friends as i do. the ears are what make me really fall in love with them even more (:
@sambible Ohhh her ears are my favorite! :) She's less nervous today & we played for a long time. I didnt know they were this playful, she plays like a kitten or a puppy! haha she wrestled my finger!
@sarahmfjayne aww (: you'll have to upload a viedo! make sure to link me! i'd love to see. they really are great playmates. like a tiny little puppy lol. i know just what you mean with the finger wrestling lol. one of mine loves to do that (:
@sarahmfjayne yikes that sounds horrible! sorry you had to go through that. did you get them at the same time or were they introduced to each other later. i had a rat that was aggressive and kept fighting with one of my other rats, she just wasn't socialized properly when she was younger (i got her as a rescue). it's usually nice for them to have some company, otherwise if you have the time, to be able to spend lots of it with them!
How precious! Enjoy each day...whether he's digging in ur plants, or trying to chew up a candle. dumbo's have great personalities, and are truly a joy!
my two male dumbo rats arnt as tame as yours how did you get your baby to get to know you and stuff ? thanks

i've had to give my other rats oral antibiotics for URIs and they absolutely detest it. makes me feel like such a bad person! lol, but i'm glad you have a healthy rat now :3

SuperRatlover1 6 months ago
@xdx82 it depends on where you live. i would definitely check out any animal shelters near you first and see if there are any rats that tickle your fancy there, otherwise do a search for local rat breeders and see what pops up. good luck! let me know if you have any more questions (:

mr12smellz 6 months ago
@mr12smellz you can tell if a rat is dumbo by the setting of the ears, they are lower on the head instead of on the top

sambible 9 months ago
@sambible Ohhh her ears are my favorite! :) She's less nervous today & we played for a long time. I didnt know they were this playful, she plays like a kitten or a puppy! haha she wrestled my finger!
sarahmfjayne 9 months ago
@sarahmfjayne aww (: you'll have to upload a viedo! make sure to link me! i'd love to see. they really are great playmates. like a tiny little puppy lol. i know just what you mean with the finger wrestling lol. one of mine loves to do that (:
sambible 9 months ago

@sarahmfjayne Did you get her any company?
Helziaggro 6 months ago
@Helziaggro No the last time I had to rats at once one killed the other one. Two females.
sarahmfjayne 5 months ago
@sarahmfjayne yikes that sounds horrible! sorry you had to go through that. did you get them at the same time or were they introduced to each other later. i had a rat that was aggressive and kept fighting with one of my other rats, she just wasn't socialized properly when she was younger (i got her as a rescue). it's usually nice for them to have some company, otherwise if you have the time, to be able to spend lots of it with them!
