Best show ever..!! Where else could you see Sun Ra, Al Green, AND the Pixies all on one show..? And I SO remember this performance which I still have on VHS.. which I've watched dozens of times.. And can I just say, Mr. Lewis you're drumming on this clip is just stellar.. What a groove & pocket.. most definitely the thing that stands out when I saw this performance for the first time.. It's funny after all these years I still remember every fill/lick you played..
Very sad to see such sad music from Arto Lindsay after seeing such transcendent music from DNA. This is dated crap, while the music he did in the late seventies is still fresh today.
Perhaps the drummer may be Ronnie Burrage? - He is really really layin' it down nicely in tandem with the awesome percussion. Burrage played with M. Gibbs in the ass kickin' NY group Defunkt.
how excellent to see a mention of Defunkt, a no-bullshit, no-compromise assault of funk and tasty grooves if their ever was one
I was lucky enuff to see one of their early performances in a tiny club in NYC sometime around 1979 and it was outstanding -- the two-guitar grooves Joseph Bowie's band laid on the small but appreciative audience were unforgettable
Joseph and the bass player (wish I could remember his name) dug the smoke we shared in between sets, too :)
No, it is I, Tony Lewis on drums. We (Arto and Melvin) will be touring Europe in May. Thanks for the kind words. Yes, Ronnie Burrage is STILL BADDASS!! I'll co-sign on that one. LOL! Be Well.
this excellent artform will make you healthier, in fact -- you might find that your ears get bigger, too, allowing you to appreciate forms of musical expression you previously thought foreign
It is funny, I just look at an old Night Music tape last night that had this on it. Does anyone have any more of the Night Music recordings? If so please reply. thanks.
Thanks for turning me on to this amazing group! Ilove your channel so much...I"m just really groovin to your choice of tunes, man! Please keep posting! 5 stars and favorited and #1 on my playlist!
That's absolutely Cyro Baptista on percussion. I didn't realize they were more than a studio project until now...It's to bad Arto doesn't tour with material from his new albums.
Oh my god. I recorded this song in the middle of the night from the radio in 1985 and listened to this tape a million times up and down. Took me some time to find out who this was. Now I find this hear. I feel 20 years younger...
There's a greta momoent just before halfway through where the front man looks around at the Lt Uhura look-alike backing singer and they exchange a knowing glance and smile. Now that's knowing your material, ripping out such a great performance, yet still being able to interact on other levels. Funky little piece!

Arto looks like Walter Becker if he lost about 50 pounds.

Holy crap! That groove on the bridge is just friggin EVIL!!!
I've been looking for this track for years, ever since I first saw it on Night Music. That show was the best thing to happen to music on television.

I think you have the wrong show. This was on American Bandstand, wasn't it? Dick Clark was a big fan of Arto Lindsay, if I remember correctly.

I recall seeing that episode live on my old TV when I was 19. And a few other episodes. I even remember when the show was called Sunday Night.
