  • Fuck he sooooo cute....

  • hey nice wand you made there i've made one myself and i turned a purpleheart lidded box i am only 15 and i am getting serious with the craft i am getting a mini lathe for Christmas, and i was wandering if you could suggest anything i could make on the lathe many thanks :)

  • @turtwigisthebest I like making boxes and there a great skill builder.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • Hello, great video! Was wondering if you could recommend a good pen lathe for a beginner who wants to get serious with the craft. Thanks!

  • how long did the wand end up being

  • It's 18"

  • Again that is a very nice project!!! You sure are getting good using that Skew. I noticed that anymore, it's starting to be your tool of choice. Good Job!!

  • Thanks Ted,

  • Is there a Harry Potter fan about the place? That's lovely work. I have to make a few of these and wasn't sure of dimensions but you've sorted that out for me.

    Thanks, Brendan.

  • No Harry Potter fans, but a little girl who wanted a magic wand. She will be a Harry Potter fan when she is a bit older (only 3 1/2 :)). Looks like your driveway was taking up alot of your time. Have you been able to finish?

    Take care,

    Carl

  • @haydenHD The driveway is nearly at the end of phase one. The pillars have to be built and the kerbs aligned with them. Then some back-filling with soil to tidy up the edges and that's it dome until about 4-6 months ahead when the top layer of decorative gravel goes on. Just have to remember to drive in different places to get the stones bedded down.

  • Hi Carl!

Long time ago our teacher show as how to make circle shape detail from square bar (between centers). He used a file with big grain. In your videos you don't use this technique, please tell why.

Sorry for my bad english - i'm from Russia.

    Thank you.

  • Could you possibly send a picture? I am not familiar with the tool.

  • @haydenHD he is probably talking about a rasp

  • yes, he sent me a picture

  • hey carl if i made one do you think it would work on the mother in law ha ha l

    nice work

    Robbie

  • It's worth a try :)

    Good luck,

    Carl

  • You forgot the magical words :P Nice one!

  • I think it helps to chamfer the 4 corners before you start turning. not only does it save time but rounding is the riskiest time for catching.

  • Thanks for the tip.

  • Great craftmanship!

  • Thank you,

  • Hi Carl!

    Nice video;-)

Just a question about lathe RPM. What's the general best criteria to set-up the turning speed's? Thanks! Kubimax

  • Thanks, it depends roughing speed is a lot slower then finishing speed. there isn't one speed that works for every thing.

  • Your a wizard on the lathe AND you're a wizard in real life!

  • Thanks, :)

  • oh my god the wand made him dissaper at the end :(

  • Nice touch at the end Carl! I'm not one for wands but I'll tell you one thing I've gotten several requests to make them. I guess I'm too embarrassed to say I'm making a wand right now haha ~TheDecoyDude

  • Nice video Carl I Glad to help with the question you had Hope you enjoy

    Allen

  • Thanks again Allen,

  • Carl .. would it be easyer to use an easy wood carbide tip tool

  • Maybe I'll give it a try.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only weirdo making wands! I've made 4 wands so far, 3 of them were whole pieces in Walnut, Zebrawood and Bloodwood, respectively. The last one, which is my favorite, I made for my wife out of purpleheart (!!) for the wand and African Blackwood for the handle. The nice part about doing a segmented wand is that you can hollow out either the wand or the handle and put a "magical core" inside, like a feather or tinsel or whichever you like. :)

  • Weirdo :) Great idea hollowing out the handle.

  • Carl...how fun!!!! And like most of your projects....it doesnt take a "cashload" of wood... or more than an hour to turn and finish! Thank You again for your videos!

    Troy

  • Thanks Troy,

  • nice wanf

  • Thanks,

  • Nice wand Carl, and it works too!

  • Thank you,

  • thumbs up! nice one Carl

  • Wow Carl you are my hero :). I have been trying to make my daughter a wand but have not been able to get past the wobble and vibrations. will have to give it a try again, I also think my tools are not sharp enough and my wood choices may be too soft. flick swish and he's gone :0

  • Thanks John, I think a hard wood is your best bet.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • Nice wand, Carl. I like the beads you added above the handle, nice touch. I did a bunch of them a couple of years ago using one wood to make the handle and another contrasting wood for the wand. I've got a few of those left now but most I've sold at craft fairs or on Etsy. One thing I've found is that it's not easy to take a good picture of them because of the proportions.

    Take care,

    Larry

  • Thanks Larry,

yes you need a large depth of field to have it all in focus. Do you still have some pictures of the ones you made.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • @haydenHD I've got two still listed on my Etsy shop. They're in the "Wands" section...what else. I've got the one I mentioned on a facebook post made out of purpleheart. I'll post a picture of it later tonight on facebook. I'd love to be able to hollow out the wand enough to run wires to the tip to put an LED in it. I'm not sure how that could be done accurately. I once saw someone using wood that had a very soft center that he hollowed out easily but I can't remember what it was.

  • @Larenzoid .You can use split turning tecnik, glue back then create your shape? good luck.

  • @dozukime Is that what I've seen called inside-out turning? That's an idea, but because the final piece is so small it would be tough. I'd have to start with a much larger piece and turn it down. It's worth a try, though. Unless you're talking about another technique.

  • @Larenzoid .Hi, What I ment was to simply saw in half length ways, saw or rout a channel for the wireing & then glue back, turn to shape, good luck.

  • @dozukime Okay. yea, that sounds simpler. I'll have to give it a try. Thanks!

  • Really nice magic wand Carl. Can you wave it and maybe the $200 I lost yesterday will reappear. I found Rosie Monday morning with her chest ripped open. Just not my week.

  • Sorry to hear about Rosie.

    Take care,

  • @haydenHD Thanks Carl.

  • Thats one for the Harry Potter fans out there. Me being one of them. Thanks for the idea. Gifts for the neices and nephews. I saw the picture of the big Maple tree on your web page. Lots of turning there. Thank you for the video.

  • Yes a great idea for the kids.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • Very nice, clean and simple. Thanks for all your great videos.

  • Thanks,
