You should read the whole two Surahs in whole. Yet just look at this verse after:9|6|And if anyone of the idolaters seeketh thy protection (O Muhammad), then protect him so that he may hear the word of Allah; and afterward convey him to his place of safety. That is because they are a folk who know not.
@randizzle89 The Translation indeed is wrong and I read Quran in Arabic and it never seemed to me at all in anyway it means "FRIENDS" go and check what does ولي or أولياء. Pickithal and Yusuf Ali weren't Arabs but they did their best and thank for their effort. The verse you posted 5:9 doesn't have Christians or lie in it. Please I ask to go to a Muslim source and read with an open mind. Surah 8 and 9 are about war rules.

It is also mainly used to say that love should only be for Allah or his followers and vise versa. There is never mention of the concept 'love thy neighbour' like in the Christian bible.

The more upset people get in denouncing others, the more insecure they feel about their beliefs. They're pissed cause they chose faith over reason, and since by definition, they cannot prove they are on the 'one true path'. With no proof, they resort to name-calling and circular reasoning. The more contrary faiths and beliefs out there, the worse they feel because they feel marginalized. I don't know about the muslims, but the christians sending hate mail are usually the ones who adhere to the most extreme views that basically tell them that if they're not being persecuted, they're not doing something right. So they have to instigate a conflict in order to get their daily dose of persecution. It's the Internet, even more so, Youtube. It brings out the worst in people.Some of the things people say here is so disgusting and vile you wouldn't even call an animal some of those names.
I'm sure we all had mothers and i'm pretty sure they didn't teach us to speak that way to our fellow man.

I am Muslim, Graham and I am just as disgusted by those types of messages as you are. The people that make those types of comments are lacking in true understanding of their religion. Perhaps they know facts, know the religion in theory, but it has not penetrated their hearts. We can not call ourselves good Muslims until we want for others what we want for ourselves. Obviously we all want validation, respect, love, acceptance, etc.. So those that do not offer that do not understand the truth.

Every attribute that belongs to Allah was given to mankind to a much lesser extent. Some of his 99 names include, "The Most Loving", "The Most Compassionate", "The Most Merciful", etc.. We possess those qualities as well, but obviously we can not compare our limited capabilites to those of Our Creator. I will not continue this debate because your purpose is not to enjoin love and understanding, but to incite misconceptions and hatred. However, I still love you for the sake of all that is good.

Until someone reads the Quran and knows when the verses were revealed, specifically the specific situation to which it applies one can misconstrue and twist a verse to mean things that it does not. Further, there are many parts of the text that promote the killing of non Muslim people. ie: Qur'an 9:5 'fight and slay the pagan Christians wherever ye find them and seize them, confine them, and lie in wait for them in ever place of ambush.'

@randizzle89 Interestingly the verse doesn't have the word Christians in it at all!! Let alone that the whole Surah chapter speaks of a war time and not casual peace time. You should read the whole two Surahs in whole. Yet just look at this verse after:9|6|And if anyone of the idolaters seeketh thy protection (O Muhammad), then protect him so that he may hear the word of Allah; and afterward convey him to his place of safety. That is because they are a folk who know not.

@randizzle89 The Translation indeed is wrong and I read Quran in Arabic and it never seemed to me at all in anyway it means "FRIENDS" go and check what does ولي or أولياء. Pickithal and Yusuf Ali weren't Arabs but they did their best and thank for their effort. The verse you posted 5:9 doesn't have Christians or lie in it. Please I ask to go to a Muslim source and read with an open mind. Surah 8 and 9 are about war rules.

@MuslimKnight i was mistaken. The book i got it from (by Nonie Darwish) was apparently wrong.
Although, i did a quick search of love and found that is used mostly to say what Allah does NOT love.
It is also mainly used to say that love should only be for Allah or his followers and vise versa. There is never mention of the concept 'love thy neighbour' like in the Christian bible.
But this reiterated my point of questioning everything to find the truth.

In principal a muslim must not go and give hate messages.
I think this happens because they dont know actually what their religion teaches or says. And when they get offended they swear.
I think we must look what a person has said about Islam and then see if it is true what he said.
And if its true then whe must accept it. And shut up.

It refers to times of war, like the Crusades, for example. Muslims were not allowed to kill Christians if they had established and were honoring a peace treaty, but if at war with them they were allowed show harshness to them. This is not war in a sense that we know in modern times, these were "Holy Wars". Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) said that if a Muslim killed a Christian who was abiding by a peace treaty with Muslims, that Muslim would not smell the scent of paradise.

It refers to those pagans who would continue to fight after the period of peace. It clearly commands the Muslims to protect those who seek peace and are non-combatants. Well one possible idea is because they believe they'll be going to heaven anyway (for christian and muslim, if you believe, you're gonna go heaven). So they have no more reason to be nice. So ... why not be mean!?

Graham, you hit the nail right on the head. They are not true Muslims and Christians. They are pretenders, its easy to put the mask on and act the part, its very hard though to walk the path. I have stumbled alot myself trying to walk the path, but i keep trying. And I personally dont care what your religion is, its not my place to tell you your wrong, because in reality nobody knows. The more upset people get in denouncing others, the more insecure they feel about their beliefs. They're pissed cause they chose faith over reason, and since by definition, they cannot prove they are on the 'one true path'. With no proof, they resort to name-calling and circular reasoning. The more contrary faiths and beliefs out there, the worse they feel because they feel marginalized. Plus, they accidentally sat on their baby jesus this morning, and the savior is now in their 'promised land'.

I don't know about the muslims, but the christians sending hate mail are usually the ones who adhere to the most extreme views that basically tell them that if they're not being persecuted, they're not doing something right. So they have to instigate a conflict in order to get their daily dose of persecution. After all, once you've nailed yourself to the cross, you're still stuck with that one last awkward hand that you can't nail yourself, so you have to find someone to do it for you.

There's this guy living in Honolulu that has two bright yellow Hum-vee's. On both of them they have this giant script on the windshield reading "God First!". But I wondered... why didn't they put "Jesus Second!" on the second Hum-Vee? Then when they can afford a third, they could have "Holy Ghost Third!" and have the hum-vee trifecta. Perhaps they didn't want to think of Jesus as #2. :-P
