Actually Timothy, this is an interesting piece of art. You see, art does communicate something to the audience, however, they can be quite complicated, and most people won't get it. High quality art is often hard to understand since critical thinking is needed to comprehend its message.
I feel that this is where performance art digresses. The purpose of art is to communicate something to an audience. If nothing is communicated then it fails. Even if the artist has a purpose to his action and an intention of revelation for the audience, if the audience does not get it then the art has fallen short. If it is unsuccessful, then the artist should re-evaluate the performance to see how can he communicate more clearly.
Its perfectly clear what he is communicating...cant you see what he is doing. Its not an artists job to teach anyone anything. Artists make. Its up to the viewer to accept, reject, draw conclusions, etc. It seems from all of the responses whatever it is he is doing this has had some provocative effect. Art isnt advertising where a "message" needs to be drawn so clear that everyone can read it...Since when is a billboard art????....sometimes...maybe
but with those kind of performances theres always a lack of evaluation on how the artist felt during and after the performance....How come?...isnt that the whole essense of it?.....
