What the hell are you people going on about. Ute is in the top actresses who have played velma. She is equally as good as Bebe neuwirth and caroline o'connor. She brings her own zany zest to the role but no one can seriously argue that she is not super talented.
OMG! Why is everyone hating on Ute? Yes she is eccentric and maybe her adaptation of the song is not what some people expected but it is still in tune, and still a marvellous performance! Crazy ... but fabulous!
hmmm....i'm torn on this one. she's got the appropriate voice for this piece, but i first heard her growling out Kurt Weill songs and now she seems very tame. Don't know...can't say this moved me any :(
She's great, but rthis show has such an American sensibility, that if you're not American, you really can't do it justice.Sorry world. We OWN this show!(LOL)
It's really not that obvious, but yes. It might just be a non-native speaker thing. It's really hard to handle the emotion behind language unless one learns this language as a kid and discovers emotion through that language.
I think the best Velma for this song is Pia Douwes. I saw she last month on stage in London and it was sooo awsome! I love her version of All that jazz
I disagree, I think Ute Lemper did a very good job of playing the part of on Broadway. I think she should've left some of that behind for this performance, just because this audience wouldn't get it, and her voice to my personal opinion has always been... odd to say the least. I thin Catherine Zeta Jones was a refreshing level of talent you don't see often if ever in movie musical versions of broadway hits. I hate movie-musicals for that reason and thought she was an exception to the majority.
The phrasing is wierd, I can't put my finger on it, but it's just...off. And that bizarre screaming at the end! I think the problem with a lot of singers is that they just don't sing the damn song already and try to get fancy.
@hooraylaw30 She says her S's with a 'sh' sound. Also English is her second language so thats probably why... but I see your point; she seems to cut off her words too soon and emphasize in weird places.
This isn't too bad considering English isn't her first language...
But I still think Catherine Zeta-Jones outdoes most productions of Chicago, after-all before Jones starred in movies she was a big-time Broadway actress...
But that is not broadway, that is the west-end, and she did it only twice, before that it was all regional theaters and some tours. Almost never a lead.
do your research .she was a english tv and small movie actress before she went to america . i saw a good bit of her work . if you don;t belive me look around here for the english tv version of the darling buds of may . i don't mean to slag her off i really do like her work but she was not on broadway prior to her sucess in the states .
Lemper is FAB but I think there are songs that show her to better effect than this - still she does it with great style. By the way, why would one want to rouge one's knees and THEN roll one's stockings down? In fact, why would one want to rouge one's KNEES at all?
now dont get me wrong cause i love Ute Lemper but i HATED this! it did not flatter her voice at all. In fact, it was really one of the worst versions I have ever heard. She did it so much nicer in the stage production :(
Verdon was one of B'ways most celebrated 'Red heads'. Plus the 'All That Jazz" number was performed by Chita Rivera, w/ quite a bit more verve than is exhibited here. Looks as though everyone's workin it except Ute.
Its definitely weird to listen to her voice because it has that German twang to it, but then when she sings in French, you'd think she was French all along.
I know!!! her club performances are just the greatest thing, here in mexico she always performs at larger venues so it's not that intimate but she still brings the house down.
I saw her on "Let's Dance", too... I absolutely love her, her voice is just... I don't know, it's amazing! SHE is amazing!! Thanks for uploading this video! :)
she hasn't lost, because she 's not in the competition, she was musical guest. Actually now she is participating as judge on the german version called Let's Dance.

I used to love Ute Lemper but in the last 10 years she has become a parody of herself. Everything seems incredibly contrived and over acted to me.

Goth icon Siouxsie Sioux would make a great Velma. I could imagine her singin' "All That Jazz." :)

Chita Rivera was the original Velma?! Oh wow! That woman is amazing.

Some of the... emphasis is wrong, somehow. "STOOORE the juice," for example. She's talented, but these are pretty basic things!

I agree... There's something strange about it... Some parts of the interpretation, maybe, not the voice...
