I think I'll make a point of clarification here. Shariah law was being applied here because, under Shariah, non-Muslims are not allowed to share their beliefs with Muslims. That's exactly what happened, although probably inadvertently.

Practically speaking, the only reason the Christians were stopped from preaching is because nobody wants Muslims to be offended because of the good possibility of violence ocdurring. This is an implicit confession of Islam's connection to violence.
