i think that IU started loosing b/c after this, players started changing in their mentality and began to reject the bob knight disciplinary style of play. tho bob knight instilled mental toughness into his players, the jay edwards and players after him at IU no longer bought into knight's style of play and discipline. tho that disciplinary style brought championships.
I fail to see any connection here. Knight still had some great teams after '87. In fact, those '92 and '93 teams were more talented and probably better.
Knight's downfall was pretty much in the last 5 years of his tenure at IU. He burned too many bridges and the type of recruits he was getting were not the loyal soldiers he was used to. The Pacers and Reggie Miller had nothing to do with it.
Yeah, it did because Steve was in New York for draft day expected to get drafted by the Pacers. But Steve stood around until the second round when the Mavericks got him. It was very embarassing in front of the cameras with Bob Neal commenting. He felt that Knight let him down after putting up with his stuff and winning a championship. Before Knight could influence NBA teams to draft someone but his players didn't do so well after Isiah Thomas and the motion offense was going out of style.
@moochercat wow. you nailed it. i agree. those early 90s teams were damn good. If they could have somehow got by Duke in '92, they would've beaten that Michigan team. Henderson got hurt in '93. i think they were even #1 in the country for a short while.
But the 1989 defeat to Seton Hall put a blueprint on how to beat IU. Good defense and 3pt shooting. Later on, teams used the zone against the General.
@saxthunder If you are talking about Reggie Miller and Steve Alford. Look at their college careers. Alford had the upper hand. I remember the 1987 NCAA with UCLA and Reggie Miller losing to Wyoming and Reggie being a punk. Thing is though, Reggie during the summers would play with the Lakers or other pros during the summers after college. Donnie Walsh knew about this and drafted him on that basis as well as recommendations from Magic and Michael Cooper.
Sadly living in ULaSmell and UlaK country I never got to see much. There was all of two minutes coverage in Lousyville when we won it all. Makes me sick.
Great compilation of news clips. Thanks for uploading this!

We were in Broad Ripple and after the game the streets were packed, no cars could get through, it was a madhouse.
The state deserves this and the next one.
The Hoosier program is the crown jewel of the state.

Indiana Pacers draft Reggie Miller instead of Steve. That is what started to General's slide.

@Ariamaluum ??? What a strange comment, considering the huge disparity between their respective NBA careers.

They just got beat by UCONN, sad...If Kelvin Sampson would just get on them for not playing tough, they might go deep in the '08 tournament.

The Good Ol' Days. Now if Butler can just pull it off this year. The state needs another title.
