I love Anat, too. I'm sure she's more marketable than the average jazz player because she's a beautiful, spirited young woman. She's also a damn good player and she brings a spirit with her that few musicians male/female have. I look forward to hearing her develop. I'm sure she's delighted to be getting a chance to play with great players and grow. What jazz player doesn't aspire to that?
Personally I'd like to see Don Byron get more due.
How about "I hate Anat Cohen!"? Sorry, Senor D'Rivera, you're great, but you (and others) are being used to hype a very modest talent, who would be teaching high school band if she weren't a young women with flowing hair who shakes her hips. Her tone is awful, her soloing is boring, she showboats, etc. I can ignore her here on YouTube, but she's all over the Sirius contemporary jazz channel. Spare us from this derivative drivel!
I respect this comment. However I think Anat has some good stage pressence and entertaining qualities which go very well with what she's doing. However I would agree to say that if Eddie Daniels performed the way she does we would never hear of him.
@mr02134 Re your conspiracy theory about Paquito D'Rivera and "others" (spooky stuff) being "used" to hype Anat Cohen - by whom? She's been the JJA Clarinetist of the Year and won Downbeat magazine's critics' poll for Rising Star on clarinet for 4 years running. Granted we all know opinions are like rectums in that (almost) everybody has one. Here's mine, with which I would better diamonds to donuts Eddie Daniels would agree: Anat Cohen is a virtuoso clarinetist and a fine musician.
How many times have we seen a person voted a particular artist of the year and that's a shear overstatement. Now I will say that in my musical criticism of Anat it's is not a put down what so ever. I think she has a lot to aspire to as an artist which would not warrant the blanketed accololades given her.
Continuing: But in terms of content and technique there is a lot more that she could possess. I know an extremely talented woodwind player who is the Jazz Saxophone professor at Ohio State University. His name is Shawn Wallace. He obvipously does not have the accolades that she has, but has way more to offer musically than she does. So Accoloades mean very very little in this case.
@mr02134 I disagree strongly. She is an extremely talented clarinetist who also has enthusiasm for what she plays. If you can ignore her on Youtube, why did you bother to post a comment?
Junto al Maestro que más se puede pedir, Anat eres sensacional, bendiciones desde Chile, el rincón del mundo. :-)
