Both sides fought on the offensive, both sides were "Aggressors"...does it matter what we call it? More than 600,000 Americans died, no matter what you call it. Why argue over the name, and instead honor the men that fought, not over the name, but for their country, which ever one it was.
As Jimmy Stewart said in the movie "Shenadoah" .. "The politicians talk of the need of war, the old men speak of the glory of it, but the soldiers... they just want to go home."
I hate the term "war of norther aggression" mostly because the south fired the first shots like 2 days before the union soldiers at fort sumpter said they would leave if they didnt get supplies
Yes, the Union could have chosen to not invade the south, but the south fought first making them the agressive ones. had they have waited oh..... 2 weeks, the term would be correct.
@wadens1 yes ft. sumter was an an unfortunate act of Southern aggresion, but the total take over of virgina and most of the south by an army with few men who respected the local people was an act of northern agression
Truth is, a good portion of the Songs from the War of Northern Aggression were written by Southerners. But since the North won the war, northerners appropriated the copyrights.

@MrMajorpaul
This was first set to music by a Southerner, John Hewitt Hill, in 1863, but it was first published as a poem in 1861 in Harper's Weekly in New York.

i always thought of this as originally a Union song, but it was turned into a song by a Confederate, based on the Union poem

To me this song epitomises the thoughts that some times occupy a soldiers mind when far from home, alone ,and maybe wishing he where some where else

This is such a wonderful song from the war, and oddly ironic, considering the period.
