Your arguments are flawed. The size of a country does not guarantee its success. Remember Soviet Union ? Used to be larger than China, same political system, what state is it in now ? China is made up of several annexed countries who are demanding to be free from Chinese rules.

I wouldn't say 'same political system'. China is effectively a capitalistic country now, its 'communism with Chinese characteristics'. China will return to communism once it reaches industrialized nation status. And Britain is also made up of several annexed countries (Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, Falklands, Isles of Man etc...) and they managed to be a world power. Similarly the US with Hawaii, Guam, etc. And about boycotting Chinese goods, countries could do that, but unlikely.

This century commonly referred to as the Asian century because of the rise of countries such as China, India and other south east asian nations who are experiencing phaenomenal growth rates that is outstripping the rest of the world. Yeah China didn't have much modern weapons then. China still was using mostly WW2 weapons. They didn't even have a efficient command structure either. Their strategy of baiting the Vietnamese into a big battle was flawed from the beginning as even USA couldn't really bait them into a big battle at will. Your arguments are flawed. The size of a country does not guarantee its success. Remember Soviet Union ? Used to be larger than China, same political system, what state is it in now ? China is made up of several annexed countries who are demanding to be free from Chinese rules.
Also, remember that, China needs the world more than the world needs China. Just ruminate on this point : what happens if the world or even half decides to boycott cheap "made in china" products ?

I wouldn't say 'same political system'. China is effectively a capitalistic country now, its 'communism with Chinese characteristics'. China will return to communism once it reaches industrialized nation status. And Britain is also made up of several annexed countries (Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, Falklands, Isles of Man etc...) and they managed to be a world power. Similarly the US with Hawaii, Guam, etc. And about boycotting Chinese goods, countries could do that, but unlikely.

N.Korea, China, Vietnam, Cuba...How is the living condition for people in these countries at the present time ? Many are struggling for food and basic rights. And many Chinese who come here are not coming in 'shipping containers'. Many are wealthy or middle class coming from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Mainland China and even Vietnam. They have homes here and homes back in their country of origin which they return to for holiday every year. They come here for the same reason as English, Americans and South Africans come here, they want a simpler lifestyle with less stress. Either that or for money, and they go home after working here.

Given there are economic or political migrants who flee here for a better lifestyle. But that's the story of humankind is it not? We always want something better for ourselves and our children. China is still a poor country ( so is the majority of the world's countries); so it's no surprise people are flocking to developed countries like NZ. I doubt they flee because they have no free speech, rather because they have no food in their bellies. Same reason why Indians & Fillipinos flee here too.

This century commonly referred to as the Asian century because of the rise of countries such as China, India and other south east asian nations who are experiencing phaenomenal growth rates that is outstripping the rest of the world. Much like how last century was indeed the Anglo-Saxon/Western centric century. In 2 to 3 decades Asia (if growth rates persist) will be home to world's richest and largest economies. Prince Sihanouk lost his power after 1970, during 1975 did he became a head of state but it was only a puppet front (a symbolic figure) and it was short lived. Pol Pot had the majority of power. Sihanouk had no significant power after 1970 and was a mere powerless refugee in Beijing.

Yeah China didn't have much modern weapons then. China still was using mostly WW2 weapons. They didn't even have a efficient command structure either. Their strategy of baiting the Vietnamese into a big battle was flawed from the beginning as even USA couldn't really bait them into a big battle at will. Funny though how Vietnam effected China's foreign policy. Vietnamese were battle tested. USA could of easily crushed the enemy, if it bothered to invade North Vietnam, and take the country.

Such deployment of troop also block Vietnam from advancing into countries like Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. USA also supplied arms to help beef up the defence of Thailand. Both China and USA also help the Cambodian gureilla forces in their resistance against Vietnamese army in Cambodia soil. Vietnam withdrew their troop from Cambodia in 1991 after the Berlin Wall crumbled and USSR disintegrated.

When Deng Xiaoping of China visited USA in 1978, both countries decided to join force to fight against USSR. Deng told USA that China would teach Vietnam a lesson for their invasion of Cambodia in 1978. Deng also said that once the objective was met, China would withdraw their troop from Vietnam. Both China and USA also worried that full scale occupation would drag them into a nuclear war with USSR. China hammered Vietnam in 1979, and withdrew from Vietnam 2 or 3 months later.

Out of no choice, President Nixon of USA flew to China in 1972 to shake hands with Mao Zedong. After the unification Vietnam sided with USSR and turned against China. Starting from 1975, Vietnam government drove away many Vietnamese of Chinese descendant into exile. Many of these refugees settled in Western countries.
