  • I guess the argument here about masculine and feminine boils down to this. As great as Nureyev was, he does have a soft femininity to him and when compared to, say, Baryshnikov, there is such a striking difference. Baryshnikov comes off fierce, muscular, athletic and manly. Nureyev to me has the beauty, lines and grace. It's really not one better than the other, it is just a huge contrast in styles, to my amateur eye, anyway.

  • He, being a man, danced with a somewhat feminine quality. So what, for goodness sake. It is said that Nijinsky had it too. Good for "Le spectre de la rose", that androginous quality, for example. A great dancer. That's it.

  • We miss you, Rudolf.......

  • lots of control...decent line, but a tad too feminine "soft", especially the arms and all the forward slow moving developes, which are not remarkable. Overall, decent technique, boringly slow music and choreography(nothing more creative than classroom combos). And by all means....remove the WIG!!!

  • @kenjoneslee the contrast of feminine and masculine i think is quite nice and beautiful. its not to feminine or sentimental. its just a powerful man dances with feminine grace and sensitivity. if the developes are in skill not remarkable, we cannot deny the beauty, so it is in this peace well done.

  • heavenly grace

  • Hey kugelmazz, what's the penalty for talking out of your ass?

  • @kugelmazz The words of someone with no medical knowledge whatsoever. ;)

  • @superdooperstupor Your answer couldnt be better. And like a ballet lover to another please tell how it was when you saw them dance? :)

PS: im 16 years old and i didnt get a chance to see them live

  • QUE ELEGANCIA !!

  • sweet perfection is what Nureyev is

  • Nureyev is divine. But one thing I will never understand, is why do the male dancers always seem to be wearing long sleeve restrictive tops? Maybe I'm wrong, but that top does not look comfortable whatsoever.

  • I would give the world just to see him live right now. What a legend.....

  • Bang on music - in his interpretation the solos begin to make sense. Very often dancers just get through them but Nureyev seems to live the music with his body.

  • this is a very difficult solo and requires lots of stamina....looks easy but it's not....

  • how this gets 6 dislikes, I don't understand. This is poetry in motion. Every single move is perfect. But if you're asking me...the camera work doesnt flatter it too much...

  • Not being an afficionado, so much an admirer, of ballet, I can't be sure, but it looks like he's uncomfortable with the slower sections. That said, I'm not sure if maybe he's doing exactly what he's supposed to do. In any case, I wish I could have seen him.

  • What year was this?

  • @RichmondRussia 100% soglasna!

  • I love you, Rudolf! Bless you, brother!

  • Incomparable Nureyev!!! Brillante!!!

  • No man nor a woman.

    But a swan!

  • This is a woman who is dancing

  • Nureyev has never been bettered.

    coraclewoman

  • He becomes the part so utterly.

  • Wow. Beautiful.

  • @superdooperstupor Oh, I wish I could have seen Nureyev, Baryshnikov and Fonteyn! You're so lucky! I'll try to convince my parents to take me to the brazilian ballet festival so I can meet Baryshnikov, or at least see him! He's always there *-*

  • Быть таким совершенным может только Нурие!!!

  • We owe him sooo, sooo very much.

  • @lucerfarul We do, you are not wrong. He made it ok for guys to want to dance in the early 1960s and beyond.

I count myself so lucky to have seen him when he first arrived in London, the impact he had then is impossible to describe now.

  • What I like about Nureyev is he's so precise! Even if he's out of balance, he right on time with the music! Love it!

  • @superdooperstupor ME TOO SAW THEM MANY TIMES,BUT SURELY NOT THE SAME TECHNICAL LEVEL,DESPITE HIS GREAT ARTISTRY RUDY NEVER HAD THE TECHNICAL CAPACITY OF MICHA,OF VASILIEV OR YURI SOLOVIEV,PRICELESS ANYWAY HIS CONTRIBUTION AT THE IMAGE OF THE MALE DANCING

  • This adagio is such a hard solo. The promenades at the end are impossible. The walks coming downstage before the final few phrases are so stunning. This is what no one can do now.

  • Life is precious, fragile, fleeting.

  • extraordinary clip. Great! thanks.

  • This is a very touching performance. One of the most poetic I've ever seen. Artistry that really touches my heart and soul.

  • Pure beauty.....So much control and poise. Dance at its best, can't take your eyes off him, sigh....RIP Rudik.

  • Bellissimo!!

  • Regardless of what some people like preciousbash might think, and they are entitled to an opinion, Rudolf was a brilliant artist who worked extremely hard to attain this level of technique. He is an inspiration for male dancers because he wanted to do so much more than just holding a ballerina elegantly, he fought for equality of artistry on stage and for that and his incredible ability he has become a legend.

  • did he smoke?

  • I think toward the end of his life he did.

  • Nijinsky was reputed to be the best. Just take a look at his powerful thighs. He must have been able to jump higher than any modern dancer.

  • I believe you are right to a certain extent. Nijinsky was exceptional, his suspension technique was perhaps better than Rudolf's but Rudolf's legacy to ballet and his ideas on the balance that needed to be kept between male and female dancers on stage are vast and visionary. Besides Rudolf's sense of perception goes hand in hand with his exceptional artistic understanding.

  • Please, stop the BS !

name the dancers you consider better then Rudolf !

  • Sorry but you don't know what are you talk about. He was The Best in his Time. Amazing artist. ARTIST... Not only The best dancer in the world.

Don't try to take him out of his Era. is not onest to do so.

    :-)

  • just who are these brilliant dancers? Do name a few for us and then advise us as to why international fame was not attained?

  • Don't confuse passion for skill. He had all the tools but his performances were always lacking.

You are intitled to your opinions but as my first instructer used to say "you are nothing without your technique" and would scoff and and hiss from the corner of the studio "your technique is showing". Niether extreme is good.

  • dasa0302.. I understand quite well and am probably one of the few commenting that have 3 decades of real instruction as well as instructing some very fine dancers anually...and this is sloppy. he was a sloppy dancer.

  • 3 decades of ENVY !!

    name your favorites !!

    stop the quack quack !!

  • precious bash you sound jealous. Nureyev is pure poetry in motion here -I fail to see any sloppiness as you put it. Care to clarify?

  • he is 3legs powered

  • I don't really like... 4 exemple when he stay in arabesque, he bend his leg...

  • It is very often used, the shape of the leg looks different then. Just watch ballet more to understand it. This slow technique is very difficult and he is considerred as one of 5 best male dancers in the world.

  • @dasa0302 excellent knowledgeable comment.

  • Nureyev was just amazing, nobody has ever danced as beautiful as him. <3

  • amazing, :D

  • I didn't understand well what do you meant, i feel a deep sense of nuisance seein his movence so "sloppy", as a tetchy "poofter", (whitout offending the gay, for whom ihave a pdepp respect), but on the other side it is undoubtable he was and is at now the greatest dancer on This heart. Beyond my personal feel about him, i repeat, whithout offending no one.

I'm not neither racist, nor sexuosofobic!

  • Sorry, but you dont understand the dance expression at all.

  • haha---I like the random servant dude in the background. :) But I would sacrifice a lot to be in his place and see this amazing performance.

  • this is brilliant even by todays standards

nureyev was way ahead his time

  • @urranuss No, Nureyev was OF his time, that's what made him great. He had exactly the same impact on ballet when he arrived in the West as Maria Callas did on opera when she first appeared in Italy a decade or so before Nureyev's defection from the Soviet Union.

  • One of the most perfect male variations i ever seen..Incredibly difficult yet so artistic. I think this is one of the pieces that made Rudik the phenomenom he was. Is one of my favorite variations of all times.

  • I don't know why people censored your posting. I'm sure Rudik would laugh at it.. he often made show off of their attributes as well as his butt. He just loved to tease the audience.

  • Bellissimo...

  • Comment removed

  • anyone knows if I can get this music from itune store??

  • What's wrong with you?

  • your on crack

  • sorry dude, ya its me

  • fantastico nureyev un mito la perfezione mi quanto vorrei averlo cnscuito

  • it's just magnificent. that's what i love about Nureyev, his control and feminity. with this solo, he made himself as beautiful and important as the swan queen. i wish i could watch him live...

  • there is something special about this version...it seems ....'real'..something about the colouring and scenery...his very serious face....it is a mood thing..but i don't feel like i am watching a ballet...it is bigger than that

  • I just saw your comment and you are absolutely right. I saw an interview of Nureyev talking about this piece and what his motivation was for this dance. He was not only a GREAT dancer, he was a true artist. When you say you don't feel like you are watching a ballet... it is bigger than that - you've found the joy of watching Nureyev! He was not always "technically perfect" - but what he gave instead was always so much more.

  • His phrasing (I don´t know which is the correct word for it in ballet) is so crafty it´s just incredibly beautiful and subtile. It´s almost like a ballerina. Entirely different from Misha, who is always energish, manly, speedy and sexy. Who is the better? You can´t compare apples to oranges.

  • The difference between Nureyev and Barishnikov is like the difference between Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. Former are more style and perfection, latter are more athletic and enthusiastic.

  • Ik4us, thank you for offering this. Could you please tell me the year of this performance and the name of the choreographer?

  • This was recorded in 1966 with the Vienna State Opera Ballet. Nureyev himself choreographed this version.

  • rosacotton, thank you for your kind information. Regards.

  • Esiste uno,adesso:Daniil Simkin,un puro genio.

  • According to my mother and grandmother seeing him dance in person was much better than seeing him on film.

  • the package is real or is atrezzo?

  • Not only was it real, it was also utilised during the intermezzo. Not on ladies, tho'.

  • I absolutely agree with your comment. I was also lucky enough to see him dance many times and it's impossible to compare seeing him on film to seeing him in the flesh. His magnetism was extraordinary.

  • I think you are very happy you have ever seen him on the stage. In any film the direct contact with the feeling expression is lost I think.

This is why I seldom show my dancing videos, I always invite people to see me dancing. That is absolutely different.

  • he was great,gay or not...also a gay is a person...and he was a great artist....really great

  • He always makes me cry.

  • I always found Nureyev magical. How enchanting. Thanks for posting.

  • nice body doesn't make great dancer

may be his feet are not that great but his dancing is more powerful than anything

  • He was great and second to no one until nowadays.

I fell sorry for his end,as i washed a film aout him.

  • He was so beautiful.

  • This variation is so beautiful and so difficult. Three minutes of utter control. I performed it twice only and found it far more difficult than the third act variation. Nureyev is just beautiful in this.

  • why do i tearing on this... just beautiful...

  • Wonderful! Thanks for posting, I think I'm going to use some of these combinations for my class!!

  • So elegant, what a style!!! Love it. He and Baryshnikov are the best!

  • see CLEM ZELESKI he was a big fan of my show he came to see me many times we would have drinks....and the things he told and showed me!!!!

  • I saw him back in 70´s and he was awesome as awesome can be. A vision I´ll always be thankful for....

  • Nureyev was the first to be aware he was running against time having entered the Vaganova so late for his training & rather than waisting time in his imperfections you should bask in the unique & unattainable qualities that he had in himself and that are beyond any technique that can be taught or learned. I saw him in all he did in London throughout the 60's and 70's and the likes of Nureyev we shall never see again: the rest included Baryshnikov next to Nureyev are only...great dancers.

  • Pravilad - WOW! I really envy your experiences! What a joy that must have been. I agree with your statement completely - "the likes of Nureyev we shall never see again." Have you seen the new posted clip from Marablasie - (April 15,2009) "Rudolf Nureyev (1991) Part 3/9"? It has a real short filmed piece of him from a Vaganova/Pushkin class. THAT brought me to tears. He is the essence of dance.

  • It is tremendous

He dances like a woman, somehow.

  • What???

  • His spirit will dance forever...great!

  • not precise???? nureyev??? who than prescise in ballet? he and barashnikov are technikaly really on top. for ever... Have a nice time with him!!! :-)))

    m.

  • amazing...perfect..mervellous...tears on my face!!

  • Beautiful, such poise and amazing control

  • Is Vladimir Malakhov his true successor?

  • he is sooooooo gay

  • why?!

  • I'm assuming you're simply being provocative by saying this...and that you're not a dancer. Or artist.

  • Of course he was gay. No one is arguing the point, but the way you've stated "He is soooooo gay" sounds condescending. And yes, I have watched the doc. and read the bio's. No one cares if he was straight or gay. He was a Great Artist.

  • well in that case I apologize, I guess.

  • it is really pleasure to see him! even if sometime he is not very precise, it is still the real art!

  • ehmm, that is really precise!

  • it is really pleasure to see him! even if sometime he is not very precise, it is still the real art!

  • moving. truly beautiful...

    (Nureyev has THE best développés)

  • made me tear up, beautiful..

  • excellent
