I guess the argument here about masculine and feminine boils down to this. As great as Nureyev was, he does have a soft femininity to him and when compared to, say, Baryshnikov, there is such a striking difference. Baryshnikov comes off fierce, muscular, athletic and manly. Nureyev to me has the beauty, lines and grace. It's really not one better than the other, it is just a huge contrast in styles, to my amateur eye, anyway.
He, being a man, danced with a somewhat feminine quality. So what, for goodness sake. It is said that Nijinsky had it too. Good for "Le spectre de la rose", that androginous quality, for example. A great dancer. That's it.
lots of control...decent line, but a tad too feminine "soft", especially the arms and all the forward slow moving developes, which are not remarkable. Overall, decent technique, boringly slow music and choreography(nothing more creative than classroom combos). And by all means....remove the WIG!!!
@kenjoneslee the contrast of feminine and masculine i think is quite nice and beautiful. its not to feminine or sentimental. its just a powerful man dances with feminine grace and sensitivity. if the developes are in skill not remarkable, we cannot deny the beauty, so it is in this peace well done.
Nureyev is divine. But one thing I will never understand, is why do the male dancers always seem to be wearing long sleeve restrictive tops? Maybe I'm wrong, but that top does not look comfortable whatsoever.
Nureyew n'a pas de complexes avec sa technique car chacuns de ses pas de danse sont fluides, posés à la perfection et coulés dans une grâce naturelle que lui seul n'a jamais possédé.
Bang on music - in his interpretation the solos begin to make sense. Very often dancers just get through them but Nureyev seems to live the music with his body.
how this gets 6 dislikes, I don't understand. This is poetry in motion. Every single move is perfect. But if you're asking me...the camera work doesnt flatter it too much...
Not being an afficionado, so much an admirer, of ballet, I can't be sure, but it looks like he's uncomfortable with the slower sections. That said, I'm not sure if maybe he's doing exactly what he's supposed to do. In any case, I wish I could have seen him.
Рудольф Нуреев внёс в мировой балет русскую школу, без которой мировой балет был бледен. Необходимо переосмыслить всю жизнь этого человека балетного танца, Бога Балета.
@superdooperstupor Oh, I wish I could have seen Nureyev, Baryshnikov and Fonteyn! You're so lucky! I'll try to convince my parents to take me to the brazilian ballet festival so I can meet Baryshnikov, or at least see him! He's always there *-*
@superdooperstupor ME TOO SAW THEM MANY TIMES,BUT SURELY NOT THE SAME TECHNICAL LEVEL,DESPITE HIS GREAT ARTISTRY RUDY NEVER HAD THE TECHNICAL CAPACITY OF MICHA,OF VASILIEV OR YURI SOLOVIEV,PRICELESS ANYWAY HIS CONTRIBUTION AT THE IMAGE OF THE MALE DANCING
This adagio is such a hard solo. The promenades at the end are impossible. The walks coming downstage before the final few phrases are so stunning. This is what no one can do now.
Regardless of what some people like preciousbash might think, and they are entitled to an opinion, Rudolf was a brilliant artist who worked extremely hard to attain this level of technique. He is an inspiration for male dancers because he wanted to do so much more than just holding a ballerina elegantly, he fought for equality of artistry on stage and for that and his incredible ability he has become a legend.
I believe you are right to a certain extent. Nijinsky was exceptional, his suspension technique was perhaps better than Rudolf's but Rudolf's legacy to ballet and his ideas on the balance that needed to be kept between male and female dancers on stage are vast and visionary. Besides Rudolf's sense of perception goes hand in hand with his exceptional artistic understanding.

I think it is you that do not understand. There have been and are some brilliant dancers out there. I do not think he was one of them..but it's so sad because he could have been all the things people say that he was !!!!
Don't confuse passion for skill. He had all the tools but his performances were always lacking.

true ballet is based on technique. it is the base for your expression. hwt you do beyond what is tecnical makes you an artist. He has awful technique. Granted I am seen him dance with more passion but I can never watch him for too long because he is very sloppy. Misha is an artist. Both insanely technically sound and then he posseses a profound energy and exuberance and grace that is purely male.
I didn't understand well what do you meant, i feel a deep sense of nuisance seein his movence so "sloppy", as a tetchy "poofter", (whitout offending the gay, for whom ihave a pdepp respect), but on the other side it is undoubtable he was and is at now the greatest dancer on This heart. @urranuss No, Nureyev was OF his time, that's what made him great. He had exactly the same impact on ballet when he arrived in the West as Maria Callas did on opera when she first appeared in Italy a decade or so before Nureyev's defection from the Soviet Union.
One of the most perfect male variations i ever seen..Incredibly difficult yet so artistic. I think this is one of the pieces that made Rudik the phenomenom he was. Is one of my favorite variations of all times.
