@TimDaHousecat Each person hears voices differently. To my ear, Gheorghiu's voice is unpleasant because of an intrusive vibrato and her audible gulping for air is hardly considered good technique.
@antolintinez FYI: No opera singer requires a microhone when performing in opera theaters or a classical music venues built for acoustics; when performing in places with bad acoustics they usually are at some distance e.g. 3-5 feet or they blow the mics. It's not really worth noticing when talking about opera singers as it is something that goes without saying; operatic singing is unamplified singing; go to opera once, you'd be amazed. But yes, I like this interpretation too.
She is an extraordinary singer- no doubt. What i personelly miss , is , more thankful behaviour in her last minutes at the stage, when she thanks and sort of talks to her audience." Why not take time to do this and bow your neck a little bit deeper- ? Everybody else does - so why don´t you? good luck!!says a big fan"
Hammer55292 -- that same silly list crowned Domingo the best tenor over bjorling Pavarotti AND wunderlich. I can't you believe you would post such trash next to the fantastic art of Gheorghiu. But I guess this is YouTube. And don't worry fonteyne. Many if us dint enjoy the callas shriek.
@texasfntc26 What are your credentials??? Where is your Doctorate from? The BBC panel were world-reknowned expert/professionals in music/opera. Can you challenge them?? Why don't you publicly state your degrees, training, experience and performance on a professional level, so we can evaluate your opinion.
@hammer55292 I think one of those days you should really learn something about opera, maybe attend a few operas. Just a thought. Then you'd know that each great voice is unique; also unless your "panel of experts" heard every single singer who ever lived and in multiple operas, they cannot really compare. And even then, who is the best is subjective. Oh, and if you talk "all time", how about Giuditta Pasta or Maria Malibran?
@jewelmarkess Hey, I cut firewood and mow grass, I don't know about opera. I just know Maria Callas is the greatest soprano of all time. What you silly characters just can't grasp is what the BBC determination means. They NEVER said Callas had the best voice, they said she was, The Greatest Soprano Of All Time. Why don't you dweebs understand this? I gotta cut wood tomorrow, and I can grasp the concept, why can't you??? And yes, they did consider Pasta and Malibran. Callas is supreme.
@hammer55292 "They did consider Pasta and Malibran" -- would you care to explain how they considered them? Do you think they listened to them? Have you ever thought that experts don't always agree? Do you even understand that "best" in something like music which relies on people's perception and taste and this is subjective? BTW, I do love Callas, just find your need to insist on her being "best ever" a bit silly. Also, you are disrespecting Callas by refusing to learn about opera.
@jewelmarkess OK Jewel, you cut all my trees for me, mow my grass, and I'll listen to Grisi, OK???? Until then DaVina Callas reigns supreme for all humanity.
@hammer55292 I was laughing at you. Giuditta Pasta, Maria Malibran, Giulia Grisi were all early 19th century singers who died long before recordings were invented. The fact that you've never even heard their names or that you thought that your BBC "experts" could've even considered Pasta or Malibran shows both your ignorance and the ridiculousness of the whole idea of talking about the "best ever". You don't even understand that music and singing is subjective... LOL. I am done with you.
@jewelmarkess If those hags died before recordings were invented, then how can you possibly say they were as good or better than Callas Da Vina? Wow, that's kind of dumb. If you think Callas is not the greatest soprano of all time, then post up your credentials for the world to see. Challenge the BBC's ruling. Go public with your name and where your Doctortate in Music is from, and your training and experience! LOL!! The BBC panel will crush you like a rotting grape, you silly kid.
@hammer55292 How can you possibly say they were worse? I am not the one claiming that any singer is "best of ALL time", you do. I am just pointing out that neither you nor anybody else can claim "all time" at least because none of your experts have lived forever. Additionally, given as BBC ruling contradicts the opinion of Callas herself, how can you belive it? Do you trust Callas' opinion? Callas greatly admired Ponselle and considered her the best. Yet BBC ruling put Ponselle at #19. ???
@hammer55292 BTW, if you've bothered to google for "BBC best sopranos" a) the very first link to an article would tell you how controversial the BBC list is b) the BBC list was made by 20 or so music critics each with their biases, not musicians or people with doctorate as you claim. c) there are many music critics in the worls. This was just one magazine opinion. Music is not running competition where you have a timer, opinions vary, different people prefer different singers.
@jewelmarkess Of course the BBC list is controversial!! Opera is the music and singing of aristocracy, and royalty, not baggy-assed rap music!!! Don't you think the BBC knew that their ruling would make some people insane with rage???? I knew it would, and I'm a woodchopper. Opera people are serious and passionate about their music and singers, so obviously Callas being named Numero Uno would ruffle many feathers. Hey, Callas is the end all, be all, get used to it.
@hammer55292 Again, BBC magazine is just one magazine out of many music magazines in the world, and it's 20 critics (notice: not some experts or musicians or authority -- no, critics out of hundreds or so critics with as much credentials in the world). Different people - including experts and critics - have different opinions. Many would put Callas first since Ponselle (whom Callas herself put 1st but whom your BBC people put 19th). Music isn't a competition, and each great artist is unique.
@hammer55292 You haven't posted the credentials of these people you claim are "experts" , have you? BBC only lists them as "critics". Critics are just journalists. Also, you don't have the authority to tell me what to post or not on a public forum. Regardless, I am done with you as it's impossible to help an intelligent discussion with someone like you.
@jewelmarkess Hey Jewel you little spinster, don't go away mad, just go away!! LMAO! Hey, no hard feelings OK??? But really, when they claimed her as the greatest, it included all aspects of opera. Showmanship, voice, technical expertise, stage presence, and on, and on. I think technically Callas was considered on the level of the conductors in musicianship, don't you agree? Also her range was phenomenal. Her MEASURED voice, was recorded at 38% above the human level, an unheard of number!!
@hammer55292 Does name callin gmake you feel like a big man? Callas the had the greatest technique? No way. She was a great diva and actress, but she had a harsh voice to begin with and it deteriorated greatly because of her emotional upheavals and finall;y due to age. She is a legend and the legendgoes much beyonhd the actual voice. My credentials: I'm a classically trained singer and I know a great voice when i hear one. Callas's voice was harsh and brittle at best.
@arpeggio1358 True. The funny thing is that I actually do admire Callas a lot, her interpretations of many roles really make me feel the story and the heroine's suffering, but I also appreciate that a lot of people didn't like her voice. The whole "who is the best" argument is ridiculous. It's the matter of personal preference. Especially "of all times", it's not like any of us have heard every legendary singer who has ever lived, and if we had we'd probably have different views.
@jewelmarkess Subjective is the most important word. Because it is so subjective, there can be no definitive answer to who is the greatest. Unless we somehow manage to make time travel possible, there is no way any person can hear all of the singers who ever leved. Maybe hammer is special and is smoking some of those plants he tends to and thinks he goes time-tripping. :-)
@hammer55292 (cont) I greatly admire Callas for her artistry, but other people may prefer more purely beautiful voices. But what you are completely ignorant of is that opera is meant to be enjoyed live, in theaters, as part of a complete theatrical production, with constumes, sets, acting. This is what Callas was famous of - singing IN operas. Opera performances are unamplified, so you get to hear real voices in their exquisite beauty. You can only do it with today's singers.
@hammer55292 You say you don't know about opera, but you're ready to accept the word of one panel as to who is the greatest soprano ever. This is ludicrous.
@arpeggio1358 That's LUDACRIS to you Peggy!! Yeah, unless someone bigger n' better than the BBC can overrule them, then ya' gots no choice but to accept their ruling!! Hey, you can like Angela, you can even kiss her if you want, but she'll never be Numero Uno!!! DaVina Callas was, is, and always will be, THE ONE!!!
@hammer55292 i can't stand Gheorghiu. I was just replying to your ridiculous comments. Do you have any idea what a complete idiot you're making of yourself? BTW, Callas was called La Divina, not DaVina...unless of course she was being called The Great Ugly Voice. Why don't you go away...unless you want to continue to make all of us laugh uproariously over your complete idiocy?
@arpeggio1358 Ridiculous??? Then challenge the BBC publicly. Do it now Peggy!! Where is your Doctorate in Music from?? Where did you teach music? Where did you perform opera? Oh, no degree, no experience, no performance!!! HA!HA!HA! Shut Peggy, and go back to your room!! Callas rules. Next!!
@hammer55292 Where is your doctorate in music from? Where did you teach music?. You sound jut like the pop opera fans who drool over the likes of Katherine Jenkins and Filippa Giordano. Your arguments have no validity. They're merely the last refuge of an uneducated gardener who knows nothing about opera. I told you that i'm a classically trained singer and I am. If you knew anything about opera, you'd know that the whole "who's the greatest singer" thing is very subjective. (part 1)
@arpeggio1358 Well, to be honest with you I would like to get it on with Katherine Jenkins, if she didn't mind my woodchopper's pants, and helmet. Anyway, the bottom line is, trying to put me down to refute the BBC is not going to work. Calling me a gardener just shows your stinking elitism. You have not gone public with your credentials, so you are dismissed. Beverly Sills, Tulio Serafin, Montserrat Caballe, Joan Sutherland and L. Bernstein all said Callas was the greatest. Who are you????
@hammer55292 i knew you were a popera fan. You have that "opera fans are all snobs" attitude. I often think that many public figures in the opera world were afraid to tell the truth about Callas, that she had a mediocre, harsh, brittle voice and was very inconsistent in her performances, fearing that people like you would attack them. BTW, Jenkins has not the voice nor the technique to sing opera. She is pure pop opera and has not the volume to sing without a microphone.
@arpeggio1358 See Peggy, you are a nut!! First of all, I never said about opera fans being snobs, I said about you calling me a gardener, which I felt was condescending. Secondly, if you think Callas DaVina had a harsh voice, that is YOUR opinion, but YOU don't count. Thirdly, I could not care less how Jenkins sings, she's way hot! And lastly Peggy, you ASSUMED because I cut wood and mow grass, that I am somewhat low-class. Unfortunately for you, I'm a multi-millionaire. Now, go to your room.
@hammer55292 And I'm the queen of England. Nobody said you're low class. You put that spin on it. BTW, arpeggio is pronounced with a soft G not a hard G, so Peggy doesn't really work as a name. And you're still embarrassing yourself...AND making people laugh at your stupidity. P.S. What you admire most about Jenkins is just silicone. Look it up on the Net.
@arpeggio1358 I never said I was a gardener, I said I mow grass, and cut wood. I mow grass and cut wood on my 160 acre estate!!! LMAO!! Peggy, you can't win here, give up now, and take a nap. As far as Jenkins is concerned, if she ever wanted to make-out with me, I wouldn't care if she had rocket fuel in those things, I'd be all over her!!!
@hammer55292 (Part 2) There is no one answer to "Who is the greatest singer". Also, if you knew anything about opera, you'd know how ridiculous the BBC panel's rating of singers is. The way they rated the singers is laughable to just about anyone with any knowledge of opera. You're welcome to believe Callas is the greatest just because the BBC said so. Most serious opera scholars would simply laugh at you. Your ignorance is still making people laugh.
@arpeggio1358 Peggy, do you know what Montserrat Caballe said about DaVina Assoluta? " I am small, compared to Callas ". Do you know what Joan Sutherland said when she heard Callas singing live? " I will never sing that aria again. How can I, Callas is perfect ". Peggy, please go to your room now, it's past your bedtime.
@hammer55292 Like I said before, people in the opera world are afraid to say anything against Callas, for fear of bringing down on themselves the wrath of people like you. People's opinions differ. You're a pretty small person if you can't accept that fact and go on with your life. Now YOU go top your room and ponder how to grow up and accept that not everyone thinks Callas is the greatest. Learn that all opinions are welcome on YouTube, little boy.
@arpeggio1358 Hey, I already said you can like Angela all you want. You can like any soprano you want. The only thing I ever said was that Callas is the Greatest Soprano Of All Time. You don't have to like DaVina Sfogatto Assoluta. You just have to accept the fact that she's the declared greatest of all time.
@hammer55292 I do not have to accept the judgement of a panel of critics from the BBC. That list is ridiculous and very prejudiced. So they declared her the greatest of all time. I don't have to accept that she actually is the greatest. Now get lost. I'm through with you.
@arpeggio1358 OK, so who do you think is the greatest, Miss Know-It-All??? HA!HA!HAH! let's hear your nominee, you silly character. Let's hear who you think can compare to Callas at La Scala, Callas at Palais Garnier, Callas at Covent Garden, Callas at Mexico City, where she drowned-out Mario ( the bull ) Del Monico, Callas' Casta Diva, Callas' Traviata, Callas' Oh Mio Babbino Caro, Callas' Eben Lontana???? HA!HA!HA! You're a silly little girl, go back to your room, and hush-up!
@hammer55292 I don't think any one person in any voice classification could be named the greatest. For one reason, there are quite a few different types within each voice type. Comparing Sills to Norman for instance, would be like comparing apples to oranges. Talking to you reminds me of the great saying, "Don't get into an argument with a pig. You'll both end up coveredd in excrement, but the pig will enjoy it." Goodbye pig.
@arpeggio1358 It's not an obsession, it is simply a statement of facts. A MEASURED voice, 38% above human, an UNHEARD of number! A super-wide vocal range. A classification as SFOGATTO, only one or two others in history. Technical musicianship on a level with conductors. Used as the basis by which THE TIMES UK, ranked all sopranos. Rated greatest of all time by the BBC. Called, not human, at LaScala. Palais Garnier opened, just for her. I don't think anybody would call that a slimy obsession.
@arpeggio1358 I am someone who loves music and will pop open any posted video that interests me. As you might guess, I have perused many singers on you tube and unfortunately ran into hammer55292 before, Marie Callas, Paul Potts, Jackie evancho to name a few. First let me say if you sift through the comments on some Marie Callas videos you will find him slandering her as well. He is not a fan of Marie Callas. I have been trying to get his account suspended for some time now & maybe you can help
@brgilbert2 Hey, maybe I'll get your stinking account suspended, you filthy pig!! I AM the WORLD-WIDE DEFENDER OF MARIA CALLAS!! You stinking pig, don't you ever forget it!! You dirty pig, I'll get you for trying to suspend me, you little pussy, punk, bitch!! I'll slap your face off, if I ever come across you. Where do you live, what's your name and address??? Answer me, you punk!!!
@brgilbert2 You dirty liar!! I am secretly loved by millions of Callas fans worldwide. It is very difficult for some of her fans to post on here, and take the bashing that goes with defending DaVina Of All DaVinas. That is my job as, WORLD DEFENDER OF SFOGATTO ASSOLUTA CALLAS. My skin is made of kevlar, my spine of stainless steel, and my massive pythonian biceps of rippled piano wire. Yes, indestructible by any means.
@hammer55292 I've been reading your correspondence with arpeggio1358, and you've got to be one of the biggest idiots I've ever come across. Your stupidity and your ignorance are hilarious. Do yourself an enormous favor and leave this video site so that you will stop embarrassing yourself. Arpeggio knows his/her stuff when it comes to opera. You obviously do not.
@pucciniverdi777 Ok, where am I wrong? Go ahead Fido, tell me!! I said Callas is Numero Uno, prove me wrong, go ahead, you little twit!! HA! HA!HA! you're so stupid, you smell.
@texasfntc26 Fonteyne? Who's that? I'll kick your ass, then we'll see who's Fonteyne. You can love Gheorghiu all you want, but she will never equal DaVina Callas. Suck it deep.
@hammer55292 This was the result of BBC's review of the opinions of 20 opera "critics," hardly a valid survey. The Cult of Callas still seems to dominate opinion in the UK. How anyone can listen to that shrill screech of Callas and anoint her the greatest voice of all time is beyond me. I have tried to like Callas for 30 years and have never heard anything sung by her to be remotely enjoyable. Gheorghiu is marvelous, not only in voice, but as a singing actress, well above Callas in everything.
@TheVengador60 measure your language here! It's a matter of preference and stop comparing, they lived in different times after all and one thing is for sure it's that "age" is in Callas's favor to be honest if Angela or any other was before her they would have been the best...this is just a matter of being born in the right place at the right time and right now any artist no matter how good he/she is has to deal with this fact, they will never be considered better than the ones in the past.
@TheVengador60 Haha, so are you trying to say that back then there weren't such ways to get recognition, that means you sure are naive. I never said anything bad about Callas you are defending so much, actually my comment was inspired from a line in "Memories of a geisha". And if that is all you understood from my comment, I pity you, because you don't have mind to read.
So if she's such a bad singer...what are you doing here!? Who are you to judge? What studies do you have to judge!
Of course in those days there were also that means of recognition. The difference is that those poor whores did not make it to the top,the sang a few times and that was it.
Today -with very few exceptions-those are the maens that they use:good looking women that know how to seduce the right people.
I am the one that pity you having such a terrible taste in music.
You don't have to have any title to judge such a mediocre perfomance, that is the problem.
@TheVengador60 If you get agitated by this that says something of your level, why are you even here if you don't like her. Are you envious of those who slept with her, are you envious of her luck...one thing is for sure you'll never be what she is.Keep your offenses for yourself and do something better with your life, the world is full of critics like you because they have nothing better to do, you frustrated being. I refuse to answer anymore to the likes of you.
Respond to this video... And please don't drop by my page to insult me as you probably have noticed I don't insult anyone nor I receive insults from anyone!

@MMiraJeS No, you just have to think of them as the World Reknowned Broadcasting Company, that they are. I care about Callas being the GREATEST SOPRANO OF ALL TIME. Everybody can like whoever they want, I don't dispute that. Howevr, Callas was decreed the greatest of all time.
@hammer55292 Just becvause one panel named her the greatest doesn't mean she is. She wasn't dubbed The Great Ugly Voice for nothing. Yes that's what she was called. Look it up. Start behaving politely instead of like someone who has been hit on the head with a hammer.
GTA 3 is where i first heard this opera then I heard it Irving Middle School when a staff member sang the song at the auditorium and even the kids where delighted with a standing ovation to the beauty of Angela singing Oh Mio Babbino Caro.
@adyluc Callas wouldn't want to be Gheorghiu, don't worry about that. She was an intelligent singer.Obviously you haven't listened to her interviews. And it's spelled Callas, not 'calas'
@ixyplixy I found this translation by another video. The song was sung by floor jansen, in a Dutch program called "de tiende van tijl". "Oh my dear papa I love him, he is handsome, handsome I want to go to Porta Rossa to buy the ring! Yes, yes, I want to go there! And if my love were in vain, I would go to the Ponte Vecchio and throw myself in the Arno! I am being consumed by the torment! Oh God, I'd like to die! Papa, have pity, have pity! Papa, have pity, have pity!"
@ixyplixy You can find the subtitled version if you look here for "O mio babbino caro Gianni Schicchi Met". This will give you a scene from a live performance of this opera at the Met, and it will be subtitled. It goes a little further than this aria in the video, but you'll get the idea about both the words and the context.
i dont know what it is i just cant get into her voice her low notes lack support and she loses the sound and her breathing is below standard but over all a wonderful voice
O mio babbino caro Mi piace è bello, bello Vo'andare in Porta Rossa A comparar l'anello Sì, sì, ci voglio andare E se l'amassi indarno Andrei sul Ponte Vecchio Ma per buttarmi in Arno Mi struggo e mi tormento O Dio, vorrei morir Babbo, pietà, pietà Babbo, pietà, pieta
Angela es certaderamente una de las mas grande estrellas brillantes que hay en el cielo de la opera actual. Angela is for sure one of the most brilliant shinig stars in the sky of the nowadays operworld. Excellent.
this must be the most beautiful thing i have ever heard. My clock radio came on and played this song while i was dreaming, and i think i will still remember it on my deathbed.
Gheorghiu....well, is difficult to pronounce. Try this - GHE like in Gedeon or in ArmaGEdon. OR is easy to pronounce, then for GHI try the first 2 letters of Gere (from Rchard GEre) or like in Bee GEes. The last - U - is like the last 2 letters of yOU. The diva deserves this effort, doesn`t she ?
If you like Puccini, check Paul Pottss studio version of Turandots NESSUN DORMA + 40 other operas by 40 other composers in my play list 20th CENTURY OPERAS ( including the world premiere of ARIA DEL CIRUJANO from Opera Opus Operatorum by Roberto Rius & Pedro Ipuche Riva )

Manrico60 speaks pretty good English considering he's the bastard son of two first cousins.......... and a dog eater. Why don't you swim back to Mexico where you came from!

LOL. I am done with you.
jewelmarkess 2 months ago
@jewelmarkess If those hags died before recordings were invented, then how can you possibly say they were as good or better than Callas Da Vina? Wow, that's kind of dumb. If you think Callas is not the greatest soprano of all time, then post up your credentials for the world to see. Challenge the BBC's ruling. Go public with your name and where your Doctortate in Music is from, and your training and experience! LOL!! The BBC panel will crush you like a rotting grape, you silly kid.
hammer55292 2 months ago
@hammer55292 How can you possibly say they were worse? I am not the one claiming that any singer is "best of ALL time", you do. I am just pointing out that neither you nor anybody else can claim "all time" at least because none of your experts have lived forever. Additionally, given as BBC ruling contradicts the opinion of Callas herself, how can you belive it? Do you trust Callas' opinion? Callas greatly admired Ponselle and considered her the best. Yet BBC ruling put Ponselle at #19. ???
jewelmarkess 2 months ago
@hammer55292 BTW, if you've bothered to google for "BBC best sopranos" a) the very first link to an article would tell you how controversial the BBC list is b) the BBC list was made by 20 or so music critics each with their biases, not musicians or people with doctorate as you claim. c) there are many music critics in the worls. This was just one magazine opinion. Music is not running competition where you have a timer, opinions vary, different people prefer different singers.
jewelmarkess 2 months ago
@jewelmarkess Of course the BBC list is controversial!! Opera is the music and singing of aristocracy, and royalty, not baggy-assed rap music!!! Don't you think the BBC knew that their ruling would make some people insane with rage???? I knew it would, and I'm a woodchopper. Opera people are serious and passionate about their music and singers, so obviously Callas being named Numero Uno would ruffle many feathers. Hey, Callas is the end all, be all, get used to it.
hammer55292 2 months ago
@hammer55292 Again, BBC magazine is just one magazine out of many music magazines in the world, and it's 20 critics (notice: not some experts or musicians or authority -- no, critics out of hundreds or so critics with as much credentials in the world). Different people - including experts and critics - have different opinions. Many would put Callas first since Ponselle (whom Callas herself put 1st but whom your BBC people put 19th). Music isn't a competition, and each great artist is unique.
jewelmarkess 2 months ago
@jewelmarkess Will you please go to your room now?? You have not posted your credentials, now hush-up!
hammer55292 2 months ago
@hammer55292 You haven't posted the credentials of these people you claim are "experts" , have you? BBC only lists them as "critics". Critics are just journalists. Also, you don't have the authority to tell me what to post or not on a public forum. Regardless, I am done with you as it's impossible to help an intelligent discussion with someone like you.
jewelmarkess 2 months ago
@jewelmarkess Hey Jewel you little spinster, don't go away mad, just go away!! LMAO! Hey, no hard feelings OK??? But really, when they claimed her as the greatest, it included all aspects of opera. Showmanship, voice, technical expertise, stage presence, and on, and on. I think technically Callas was considered on the level of the conductors in musicianship, don't you agree? Also her range was phenomenal. Her MEASURED voice, was recorded at 38% above the human level, an unheard of number!!
hammer55292 2 months ago
@hammer55292 Does name callin gmake you feel like a big man? Callas the had the greatest technique? No way. She was a great diva and actress, but she had a harsh voice to begin with and it deteriorated greatly because of her emotional upheavals and finall;y due to age. She is a legend and the legendgoes much beyonhd the actual voice. My credentials: I'm a classically trained singer and I know a great voice when i hear one. Callas's voice was harsh and brittle at best.
arpeggio1358 2 months ago
@jewelmarkess Nobody can argu4e with hammer. He simply won't see what an idiot he's making of himself.
arpeggio1358 2 months ago
@arpeggio1358 True. The funny thing is that I actually do admire Callas a lot, her interpretations of many roles really make me feel the story and the heroine's suffering, but I also appreciate that a lot of people didn't like her voice. The whole "who is the best" argument is ridiculous. It's the matter of personal preference. Especially "of all times", it's not like any of us have heard every legendary singer who has ever lived, and if we had we'd probably have different views.
jewelmarkess 2 months ago
@jewelmarkess Subjective is the most important word. Because it is so subjective, there can be no definitive answer to who is the greatest. Unless we somehow manage to make time travel possible, there is no way any person can hear all of the singers who ever leved. Maybe hammer is special and is smoking some of those plants he tends to and thinks he goes time-tripping. :-)
arpeggio1358 2 months ago
@hammer55292 (cont) I greatly admire Callas for her artistry, but other people may prefer more purely beautiful voices. But what you are completely ignorant of is that opera is meant to be enjoyed live, in theaters, as part of a complete theatrical production, with constumes, sets, acting. This is what Callas was famous of - singing IN operas. Opera performances are unamplified, so you get to hear real voices in their exquisite beauty. You can only do it with today's singers.

@hammer55292 Actually, I think Giulia Grisi was the best ever. I dare you to disprove that. I think you should listen to her, you'll be amazed.
jewelmarkess 2 months ago
@hammer55292 You say you don't know about opera, but you're ready to accept the word of one panel as to who is the greatest soprano ever. This is ludicrous.
arpeggio1358 2 months ago
@arpeggio1358 That's LUDACRIS to you Peggy!! Yeah, unless someone bigger n' better than the BBC can overrule them, then ya' gots no choice but to accept their ruling!! Hey, you can like Angela, you can even kiss her if you want, but she'll never be Numero Uno!!! DaVina Callas was, is, and always will be, THE ONE!!!
hammer55292 2 months ago
@hammer55292 i can't stand Gheorghiu. I was just replying to your ridiculous comments. Do you have any idea what a complete idiot you're making of yourself? BTW, Callas was called La Divina, not DaVina...unless of course she was being called The Great Ugly Voice. Why don't you go away...unless you want to continue to make all of us laugh uproariously over your complete idiocy?
arpeggio1358 2 months ago
@arpeggio1358 Ridiculous??? Then challenge the BBC publicly. Do it now Peggy!! Where is your Doctorate in Music from?? Where did you teach music? Where did you perform opera? Oh, no degree, no experience, no performance!!! HA!HA!HA! Shut Peggy, and go back to your room!! Callas rules. Next!!
hammer55292 2 months ago
@hammer55292 Where is your doctorate in music from? Where did you teach music?. You sound jut like the pop opera fans who drool over the likes of Katherine Jenkins and Filippa Giordano. Your arguments have no validity. They're merely the last refuge of an uneducated gardener who knows nothing about opera. I told you that i'm a classically trained singer and I am. If you knew anything about opera, you'd know that the whole "who's the greatest singer" thing is very subjective. (part 1)
arpeggio1358 2 months ago
@arpeggio1358 Well, to be honest with you I would like to get it on with Katherine Jenkins, if she didn't mind my woodchopper's pants, and helmet. Anyway, the bottom line is, trying to put me down to refute the BBC is not going to work. Calling me a gardener just shows your stinking elitism. You have not gone public with your credentials, so you are dismissed. Beverly Sills, Tulio Serafin, Montserrat Caballe, Joan Sutherland and L. Bernstein all said Callas was the greatest. Who are you????
hammer55292 2 months ago
@hammer55292 i knew you were a popera fan. You have that "opera fans are all snobs" attitude. I often think that many public figures in the opera world were afraid to tell the truth about Callas, that she had a mediocre, harsh, brittle voice and was very inconsistent in her performances, fearing that people like you would attack them. BTW, Jenkins has not the voice nor the technique to sing opera. She is pure pop opera and has not the volume to sing without a microphone.
arpeggio1358 2 months ago
@arpeggio1358 See Peggy, you are a nut!! First of all, I never said about opera fans being snobs, I said about you calling me a gardener, which I felt was condescending. Secondly, if you think Callas DaVina had a harsh voice, that is YOUR opinion, but YOU don't count. Thirdly, I could not care less how Jenkins sings, she's way hot! And lastly Peggy, you ASSUMED because I cut wood and mow grass, that I am somewhat low-class. Unfortunately for you, I'm a multi-millionaire. Now, go to your room.
hammer55292 2 months ago
@hammer55292 And I'm the queen of England. Nobody said you're low class. You put that spin on it. BTW, arpeggio is pronounced with a soft G not a hard G, so Peggy doesn't really work as a name. And you're still embarrassing yourself...AND making people laugh at your stupidity. P.S. What you admire most about Jenkins is just silicone. Look it up on the Net.
arpeggio1358 2 months ago
@arpeggio1358 I never said I was a gardener, I said I mow grass, and cut wood. I mow grass and cut wood on my 160 acre estate!!! LMAO!! Peggy, you can't win here, give up now, and take a nap. As far as Jenkins is concerned, if she ever wanted to make-out with me, I wouldn't care if she had rocket fuel in those things, I'd be all over her!!!
hammer55292 2 months ago
@hammer55292 (Part 2) There is no one answer to "Who is the greatest singer". Also, if you knew anything about opera, you'd know how ridiculous the BBC panel's rating of singers is. The way they rated the singers is laughable to just about anyone with any knowledge of opera. You're welcome to believe Callas is the greatest just because the BBC said so. Most serious opera scholars would simply laugh at you. Your ignorance is still making people laugh.
arpeggio1358 2 months ago
@arpeggio1358 Peggy, do you know what Montserrat Caballe said about DaVina Assoluta? " I am small, compared to Callas ". Do you know what Joan Sutherland said when she heard Callas singing live? " I will never sing that aria again. How can I, Callas is perfect ". Peggy, please go to your room now, it's past your bedtime.
hammer55292 2 months ago
@hammer55292 Like I said before, people in the opera world are afraid to say anything against Callas, for fear of bringing down on themselves the wrath of people like you. People's opinions differ. You're a pretty small person if you can't accept that fact and go on with your life. Now YOU go top your room and ponder how to grow up and accept that not everyone thinks Callas is the greatest. Learn that all opinions are welcome on YouTube, little boy.
arpeggio1358 2 months ago
@arpeggio1358 Hey, I already said you can like Angela all you want. You can like any soprano you want. The only thing I ever said was that Callas is the Greatest Soprano Of All Time. You don't have to like DaVina Sfogatto Assoluta. You just have to accept the fact that she's the declared greatest of all time.
hammer55292 2 months ago
@hammer55292 I do not have to accept the judgement of a panel of critics from the BBC. That list is ridiculous and very prejudiced. So they declared her the greatest of all time. I don't have to accept that she actually is the greatest. Now get lost. I'm through with you.
arpeggio1358 2 months ago
@arpeggio1358 OK, so who do you think is the greatest, Miss Know-It-All??? HA!HA!HAH! let's hear your nominee, you silly character. Let's hear who you think can compare to Callas at La Scala, Callas at Palais Garnier, Callas at Covent Garden, Callas at Mexico City, where she drowned-out Mario ( the bull ) Del Monico, Callas' Casta Diva, Callas' Traviata, Callas' Oh Mio Babbino Caro, Callas' Eben Lontana???? HA!HA!HA! You're a silly little girl, go back to your room, and hush-up!
hammer55292 2 months ago
@hammer55292 I don't think any one person in any voice classification could be named the greatest. For one reason, there are quite a few different types within each voice type. Comparing Sills to Norman for instance, would be like comparing apples to oranges. Talking to you reminds me of the great saying, "Don't get into an argument with a pig. You'll both end up coveredd in excrement, but the pig will enjoy it." Goodbye pig.

@hammer55292 Everyone who sees your comments will see what a slimy creep you are...and laugh at your ridiculous Callas obsession. I'm done with you.
arpeggio1358 2 months ago
@arpeggio1358 It's not an obsession, it is simply a statement of facts. A MEASURED voice, 38% above human, an UNHEARD of number! A super-wide vocal range. A classification as SFOGATTO, only one or two others in history. Technical musicianship on a level with conductors. Used as the basis by which THE TIMES UK, ranked all sopranos. Rated greatest of all time by the BBC. Called, not human, at LaScala. Palais Garnier opened, just for her. I don't think anybody would call that a slimy obsession.

Maria Callas- " The Greatest Soprano Of All Time ", the BBC, 2007. Gheorghiu was not even in the top 20. Sorry folks.
hammer55292 7 months ago
@hammer55292 This was the result of BBC's review of the opinions of 20 opera "critics," hardly a valid survey. The Cult of Callas still seems to dominate opinion in the UK. How anyone can listen to that shrill screech of Callas and anoint her the greatest voice of all time is beyond me. I have tried to like Callas for 30 years and have never heard anything sung by her to be remotely enjoyable. Gheorghiu is marvelous, not only in voice, but as a singing actress, well above Callas in everything.

@fonteyn9 Gheorghiu didn't even make the top 20!!! LMAO!! If you don't think Callas' Eben Lontana is not celestial, then you need a hearing test.
hammer55292 6 months ago
@fonteyn9 To compare Callas with this bitch is like comparing a Ferrari with a Fiat...
Wash your mouth with acid before uttering such stupidity.
TheVengador60 3 months ago
@TheVengador60 measure your language here! It's a matter of preference and stop comparing, they lived in different times after all and one thing is for sure it's that "age" is in Callas's favor to be honest if Angela or any other was before her they would have been the best...this is just a matter of being born in the right place at the right time and right now any artist no matter how good he/she is has to deal with this fact, they will never be considered better than the ones in the past.
MMiraJeS 2 months ago
@MMiraJeS That is true but not for the reasons you are stating:
If your "angela"was born before Callas she would not even enter from the door service to an opera theatre.
In those glorious days singers had their careers and fame because the worked hard and sang well
These days you get recognition first in bed-producers,conductors,singers-then you go and sing on the theaters...that is a hell of a difference.
This is a horrible singer that knows very well how to get in and out of hotels rooms...
TheVengador60 2 months ago
@TheVengador60 Haha, so are you trying to say that back then there weren't such ways to get recognition, that means you sure are naive. I never said anything bad about Callas you are defending so much, actually my comment was inspired from a line in "Memories of a geisha". And if that is all you understood from my comment, I pity you, because you don't have mind to read.
So if she's such a bad singer...what are you doing here!? Who are you to judge? What studies do you have to judge!
MMiraJeS 2 months ago
@MMiraJeS You are so stupid!!
TheVengador60 2 months ago
@TheVengador60 If you get agitated by this that says something of your level, why are you even here if you don't like her. Are you envious of those who slept with her, are you envious of her luck...one thing is for sure you'll never be what she is.Keep your offenses for yourself and do something better with your life, the world is full of critics like you because they have nothing better to do, you frustrated being. I refuse to answer anymore to the likes of you.

All kidding aside, if you want to hear a version not of a human being, listen to Callas' , 1958 Paris. Surreal.

Isn't it against opera law to call someone
divina?? There is only one La Divina, and no one else should ever be referred to as divina. That's a clear violation, as I see it.

Angie needs comprehensive adult ceramic orthodontics, particularly her class 2 overbite, ( upper ). It will make her mouth look much better.

I agree. But I'll bet she's worried it'll affect her singing.
Still though, in the old days, most female opera singers looked like linebackers. So she's like Farah Fawcett compared to them.

This is the best version I have ever heard.
Her singing is flawless and her emotion makes it even better.
Way better than anyone even Netrebko.

Manrico60 speaks pretty good English considering he's the bastard son of two first cousins.......... and a dog eater. Why don't you swim back to Mexico where you came from!
