Pre was and still is a hero to many many runners. I do think that there are runners with his determination and passion, but not many. He clarified the sport of running for a lot people, reminding everyone that running is not all about winning a race; that to love winning a race and to love running are two different passions. Also, I greatly respect him for his belief that only the runner who tears through the pain and has the most guts should win, not one who can plan out his race.

Personally, I feel that his arrogance was his downfall, with all his talk about a 'guts race' and insulting those who had made the effort to train on their speed finish. If you look at Viren, he too was not the best sprinter (compare to Miruts Yifter), but he was humble and did his talking on the track. He was rewarded with everything from World Records to the Olympic gold.
