  • Virén's '72 Olympic 5K victory came from his careful running of almost all the bends (curves) near the inner edge of the first lane, which spared him tens of metres compared to his chief rival Steve Prefontaine-United States. Prefontaine gave Virén a handicap of over forty metres at the 1972 Olympics 5,000 metres. Prefontaine actually ran a 5K distance faster than Viren, but the 40 metres handicap gave Viren the victory. This fact makes it difficult to label Viren a faster runner.

  • Moyizz shut the fuck up u stupid fatass piece of stupid shit it is an honor to run a 4:10 mile. People work for it through years of hard training u can't just say that you ran it. Your also fucking stupid because at age 7 a 4:10 mile would be a world record and if you reallly are 7 ur not allowed to have a YouTube.

  • lol if your best person at school runs a 530 and is the best your team blows

  • Hey guys, shake dicks and get over it. No shit you didnt run a 4:10 miler as a seven year old

  • shit quality video, fucking amazing runner

  • Its a shame that pre was taken at such an untimely period. There will never be another like him. The magic is gone forever.

  • Please, people like Robo, stop posting your year of education and your PR on every single running video there is out there.... its ridicuous. "I'm 7 and I ran a 4:10 mile, I'm going sub 4 next spring." No, no one cares, please stop posting your PR's and your life aspirations on here as if someone truly cares. It's great if you're a good runner, but then, why feel the need to get reassurance on youtube?

  • @Moyizzo9196 if your seven you definitely did not run a 4:10 mile my friends is the best at my school and he runs about a 5:30 mile if your running a 4:10 mile you should be a professional.

  • on the rock did they spell it Pri?

  • they spell its pre

  • @schultz2384 congrats. now let's see if you ever improve

  • mines 5.47 nothing special. but i look to imporove it. only a freshman.

  • I was gonna say "There is no music!"

That sucks, man. What song was it?

  • the worlds greatest runner killed man thats sucks soooooooo much he was such a great man

  • Well Pre was at the height of his career whenever he tragically was killed in a car accident.. Im sure he would have done much better at the montreal olympics. Bottom line isn't you wouldnt compare the two there don't run the same events.

  • I agree with treehugger... Pre was a distance runner and Usain Bolt is a sprinter you can't really compare the two!

  • Bolt set WR's.

pre did not, bolt is the better runner.

  • Pre has heart and gives us something to stare in awe at, Bolt does not.

  • You didn't stare in awe when Bolt he broke 3 world records at the olympics? You can't call yourself a runner if you didn't watch it.

  • No and he boasted, he's just letting this stuff get to his head and he's becoming a show off I was impressed but overall I stood there in disgust, the sport is about doing it with heart and pushing yourself past your limits and when you finally get there you show the utmost respect, it's more of a dream then a reality.

  • You act like Pre never celebrated.

  • He didn't celebrate in a race, he did after it but did it with respect and thanks towards his chance and gift of running.

  • Ok what are your Pr's? thats the only way we can settle this.

  • Pr's? I'm sorry I don't know what those are lol.

  • Pb's

    personal records

    personal bests

  • Oh, my personal best in mile is 4:22 but that's at high school level so cut me some slack I know college times are better.

  • You got me beat. You win. Pre is better than Bolt.

  • Why whats your time? it doesn't matter their both amazing athletes.

  • From last year 4:49. But I trained like a beast a beat people that run low 4:30's at cross country this year.

  • Ah I'm trying to shave off at least 10 seconds this year and get 4:12 or at least out of the earlier twenties to early teens.

  • didnt know beast ran

  • dude dnt worry my pr for the mile is around 6:30 haha and im a sophmore

  • Is it possible to insult Pre?

    The man is legend.

  • wtf are u talking about???

they din't even run the same distance

  • Sprinters and long distance runners are completely different. Comparing them is ridiculous... I'll tell you one thing though. Distance running takes a lot more heart.

  • Pre was and still is a hero to many many runners. I do think that there are runners with his determination and passion, but not many. He clarified the sport of running for a lot people, reminding everyone that running is not all about winning a race; that to love winning a race and to love running are two different passions. Also, I greatly respect him for his belief that only the runner who tears through the pain and has the most guts should win, not one who can plan out his race.

  • Nothing

  • pre is DA BOMB!!!! so shut up all u h8rs!!! if u h8 pre anyway than y wud u watch dis video in da 1st place??? ENOUGH SAID!!!

  • Four golds for Viren! YEAH!!

  • Steve was a beast, Sad to see him go. He hadent even reached his best.

  • whenever i'm running a cc meet prefontaine's quotes are what make me run that two miles harder every time and win my meets half of the time. he's basically the reason that i run

  • The BEST EVER....Period

  • go PRE go...

  • ... and you wrote 'the' not 'they'.

  • good video but its bleed not blead lol

  • stop pre

  • As a runner, steve prefontaine is an inspiration to me, he inspires me constantly to give everything i have to win the race. its a shame he as taken early from us here in oregon

and one other note, whoever it is going around to ALL the videos with Steve Prefontaine in them, saying " Pre was my cousin". even though i doubt it, if he really was, then stop bragging about it on every video for bloody sake... wanker

  • stop pre - was because he held so many American records he was unstopable at that time(70s) it was a challenge to anybody anywhere anytime to stop his streak?

  • way to spell bleed wrong

  • They were kind of daring someone to "stop" him.

  • heyy guys i woner why did the people say "Stop Pre"...what does it mean???

Pre is my favorite runner..i wish he is here to run....

  • it was a joke the washington st. spectators put on their shirts as a comeback to the "go pre" shirts

    pre lives

  • Pre had the guts and confidence to put his reputation on the line in every race...I did the same in my days and came away w/ a 2:14 marathon and a 1984 US Olympic Marathon Trials spot @ the age of 20...tried to pull away from Salazar and crew at the half and then faded...at least I tried...

  • Ouch, man! Pre was my inspiration. Full of s__t? See 22nd place below. Have a nice day.

    Boston Marathon 1983 men's results: 22. Carlton T. Law, North Carolina, 2:14:21

  • how do we know you didn't just copy/paste a random name and time?

  • You will never know....I understand your skepticism. I would like to think that anyone posting personal comments to this video is honest. I am not a BS artist. I was not trying to brag, only wanted to share w/ others the inspiration I found in Pre.

Pappychucks' reply was cold and classic BS...

  • you liar, you wouldnt put your real name on the internet for all to see!

  • i swear to god

  • wow man....go to hell

  • i used pretend to be Pre and run from my house to school playground in 1972-73 when i tried out for XC in 7th grd...i won my 1st race 1.3 miles in 6:02..in 7th grd I ran a 2min.13sec in 880...one of the fastest AAU age group times all the time pretending to be PRE in my head...

  • my friend ran a 4:40 as an 8th grader! whats up!!! =]

  • stfu steve was the man and hes not black

  • Its not you its your friend whats upp!! lol

  • My best mile time was 5:09 in high school. I only wish I could get down to that now.

  • this is my last year. My best mile time is 5:06. I am so going under five and I hope under 4:50 in outdoor :)

  • Go for it man. As Pre said, it's a shame to waste the gift.

  • that is true. and I want to run in college, so I have to do this. I have until march 17 before outdoor. I just started training a few days ago since i took a week breakk from running after indoor like my distance coach said. He said i already look much better than indoor. see what pre can push you to do :)

  • Pre's cool... a girl i know has a little crush on him..... she's not insane though she's normal

  • dude stfu. running takes more than just genetics. It's also about mentality. it's all in your head. You need guts kid. THe pain is just in your head. Once you figure that out, you can do anything.

  • amen to that.

  • you said it :)

  • all you people prefontaine is my cousin dont hate on him

  • who would hate steve prefontaine? people idolize him. nobody hates him and i doubt he is your cousin

  • since we are talking about times Pre ran a 4:05 or faster just about every time he ran the mile and when he was running the 5k he ran that pace easy on the final mile

  • pre was great b/c he seemed to run beyond his capabilities. He was short, one leg was actually a different length than the other. He wasn't built to run like this Ethiopian and Kenyan machines nowadays. He had heart

  • umm, veras team were blood dopers

  • no you suck. ima freshmen and i ran a 5:02 and tripped at the finishline in a sprint.

  • hahaha you tripped whata loser

  • the guy that posted this was a freshman last year and ran a 4:42 so you suck!

  • a 5:02 is nothing to brag about. I ran a 4:58 as a freshmen but you dont see me going around and bragging on videos. Just shut your mouth, please. Thank you.

  • yea seriously, thank you. i ran a 4:52 as a freshman, and i was 13 y/o. i went on to run a 4:25 as a senior in high school at 17 y/o. you don't see me going around and gloating like some arrogant bastard on videos either. Pre was the best. There will never be another runner like him.

    Period.

  • hammer 5:02? lol wow have you not seen highschool times lately?

  • temp272727 im curious to know what ur best mile time is cause im gonna try to beat his records cause to date my best mile time is 5:22 and im a freshman

  • I can't believe you aren't even able to spell EXCELLENCE right, dear god!

  • that's ok...he couldn't spell "bleed" either (look at the quote at :11)!

  • at 1:30 what kind of shoe is that? can u click my name and like put it in my mail please thanks!

  • Just read the biography on him and must say that with the state of the AAU at the time, it would have been hard for him to have performed better than 4th in the next Olympics. I love pre 'obviously,' but due to his death and Frank Shorter's integrity, the rules were changed in 78.

  • Sure he is good..... but i am gunna beat his records <<<yeahh we'll see about that

  • wat the heck is up with the gay music, lol. wat was in ur head. LOL!

  • dude your gay dont watch it, it is a tribuet dumass

  • all pre fans i have made a tribute to pre please come by my channel and click on the video, watch it and u can leave a comment in the video

  • yah ok

  • He would have won the olympics in Montreal Pre lives

  • best runner and completely bad ass

  • He is amazing*

  • He was amazing.

  • Best runner ever. PERIOD.

  • Man pre is my idle he is like so fast!!!!

  • yea the music does suck. he would of won the 1976 olympics in montreal

  • Correction. Just because he may have had a few doesn't mean that he caused the accident.

  • his blood alcohol was related to the decomposition of his body.

  • NO ONE would have ever beaten PRE on the roads!!!!

As far as drinking, wasn't another car involved? Just because he had a couple doesn't mean that some one else may have caused the accident!

  • there were two vehicles involved. it was a hit and run

  • video tribute awesome. this song is not for a guy like pre. everytime i hear this song i think of M.J. in the video, for the looney tunes movie

  • agreed music really doesn't fit pre at all if you knew anything about him MUSIC SUCKS!

  • MUSIC SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • PRe is the "greatest"

  • check out my Prefontaine compilations

  • Very emotional story, I learnt it only yesterday, from a movie I watched randomly on TV...

    R.I.P. Pre

  • pre's ok

  • so what are you saying trdru? just becasue he wasn't the best in the world, he was still the best in the u.s. not only was he great becasue of his talent, but also becasue his passion for running and for his determintaion to do his best and to win. i couldn't give a damn what you thought about him, true runners admire him and want to be as good as him.

  • exactly!

  • Pre helped runners to get paid.

  • He's an inspiration to many American runners though. And yeah, he bragged. But only a few have held as many American records as he did at once. And let me tell you, if he was alive today, you wouldn't even have come close to typing what you did. Because he would have been a world record holder.

  • It is possible, for sure that he may have made a come-back in 1976. After all, it is the same with all champions.

Personally, I feel that his arrogance was his downfall, with all his talk about a 'guts race' and insulting those who had made the effort to train on their speed finish. If you look at Viren, he too was not the best sprinter (compare to Miruts Yifter), but he was humble and did his talking on the track. He was rewarded with everything from World Records to the Olympic gold.

  • next time please pick gayer music. it wasnt gay enough. let me emphasize how important it is to have gay music next time.

    MAKE IT GAYER!

  • How about Michael George, or even Boy George. Yeah, Pre would kick the ass of the guy who picked out this music.

  • and no, we don't like him because he's famous... we like him because he was a fucking amazing runner.

  • for all you people saying bad things about pre, or how he was a front runner... do you reolize how hard it is to run up front and keep the lead for three miles? i would seriously like to see your lazy asses do it... and until you do i wouldn't talk bad about it

  • moral of the story if you cross the center line, and may have killed a famous person, you had better leave the fu.cking scene of the crime

  • an admirable guy and competitor r. kelley made the video corny though. PRe influences runners just like the strong black men and women from africa

  • Hes so overrated. He can't stack up against the greats. PreFonatine had no kick, so thats why he became a front runner. But to front run against the Kenyans, Ethiopians, Morrocans, he couldn't. Why do you guys like him so much? You guys just like him because hes famous. Have you guys ever hear people like: Bernard Lagat, Kenenisa Bekele, Daniel Komen, Hicham el guerrouj, Rui Silva, Noah Ngeny, Rashid Ramzi,Eluid Kipchoge? Thats also one of the reason why.

  • A kick is not everything. He ran against guys who had better kicks, but could not come close to sustaining their max effort like Pre could. He never got the chance to do the stuff he may have been capable of doing. People like him because of what he was about, not just his accomplishments.

  • so when are you planning on running a sub 13 3 mile?

  • why do you care? just zip it noodles.

  • did any of these greats hold their country's record at every distance from 2000m to 10000m at the same time. pre did. most guys try to be world class at one maybe 2 distances. Pre can against milers up to 10k. Ask those guys what they think about pre. they probably race in the prefontaine classic every year.

  • your are exactly right...i was there in the late 70s running at the NCAA level. no one close to Pre. Yes he would have won 1976 final 5000.

  • Prefontaine sucks. Hes like the Ali in running. They both got what they deserved. Hes was only a great American runner. Had no chance against world class competitors

  • are u kidding. He would have won the 5000m in montreal at the 1976 olympics. he was running 7 sec faster in 74 than in munich in 72. he would have made them all bleed to stay with him to win a gold in 76.

  • no chance that he would have won 1976 in Montreal

  • who would beat him?

  • Actually, he did- he was just 24 when he died and he hadn't reached his peak. His winning time @ the trials was faster than the winning time @ Munich.

  • lame music

  • pre is the man. he was amazing.

  • wow steve can run perrty fast I wish I could run like him!!! lol

  • minus the spelling (bleed, and excellence) it was excellent:) Moral of the story, don't drink and drive...

  • yeah but he should of won olmpic medals .dont you know the best people die young....pre is a legend

  • prefontaine is probably one of my heros... nice job

  • No olympic medal to his name

  • He was capable of beating those guys the finns were later found to have been blood doping, plus, Pre's time @ Eugene was faster than the winning time in the Olympics.

  • Actually, Viren was never proven to have blood doped. Also, as great as it was for Pre to run a faster time, unfortunately that means virtually nothing... running fast and racing/winning a tactical race are two completely different things...

  • dude you spelled bleed wrong in the first quote

  • i cried go pre

  • dude you spelled bleed wrong in the very beginning

  • very nice could be better if they were more actual pics of pre and not the actors from the movie

  • nice video

  • Even though the pics were really blurry :^/ that was really good! Steve Prefontaine changed the way i think about sports forever.
