  • I couldnt make it past the first 2 minutes. You people have the nerve to talk shit about their own uni.

    1) If you cant stand it, Transfer TO NUS. There's still time. STOP FUCKING COMPLAINING. Your bitter attitude makes people like me, who cherish every moment and build our friends and memories in this school.

2)WAKE UP. India, China, Mexico, Vietnam etc are rising. And if you wanna party and not pay the price, forget about job security. Don't graduate to blame the 'foreigners' taking your jobs

  • hey, chill out, join SIM, its a whole new world man. All sorts of different stuff.

  • but smoo sch spirit is really awesome. we are a force to be reckoned with. cherish it. love it. learn to accept it. you'll see where you'll fit in. give it a year. give it a chance. i miss smoo a lot

  • hey, im from canada and i will be going on an exchange to smu next semester. any idea what sort of courses i should take that are easy and will let me travel? thanks appreciate it

  • did you spend 40 hours in the school library alone or were there others with you. smu life really encouraged friendships. and built some life skills. i am not saying nus and ntu don't. i am just saying that we had more opportunities. our school life is what pushes us. if you feel the competition, step out of it. those who want good grades and a good life, then the time is in your hands. plan it well. our school culture may seem a little off to the new entries.

  • i am speaking as an ex smu-undergrad. lets be honest people. the changes started happening after the population grew. i joined the year smoo moved to the new campus. i loved my time there and everyone knew each other. thats something SIS students get to enjoy. but i hear even they are taking in almost 200 students. smoo is different. trust me. as someone doing my masters in US, i know. our lot is generally prepared for anything.

  • I am currently enlisting into NS. I have applied for SMU business and have gotten the interview. I felt strongly about getting into SMU becuz of the marketing that SMU is different, in the sense that it is more vocal and people are more out-going. However, checking out this video and many other forums online. I am serious in doubts now. Especially if the president of the student union is supporting this call that SMU is not the place to be

  • i would say i have had my fair share of feeling the stress in school in the past 4 years. i am not grades conscious (thus lousy grades) but some of the competitiveness do get to me. yes, it is competitive, so is the working world out there. i see it as somethg to prepare me for the unknown future, and take things in stride. ironically, i like more than i hate this video, it sets me pondering, i hope fellow smu mates do too. play more =D enjoy your student life.

  • Though this video might shed a bad light on the culture of smu,as it comes across as it is all work no play,i still think smu has a unique culture (might have shifted a little over time),but i hope this video serves as a wake up call. A call for individuals to cut themselves some slack. However it is still a matter of personal choice.

  • Shashank is from class of 2003, not 2002.

Anyway, stop whining and complaining. I am from the class of 2003. You guys don't like something. Change it.

FFS, how old are you guys? 12?

Instead of doing something pro-active, like how many of my batch and the previous batch did, you instead show your 'disappointment' by making a video and putting it on youtube for everyone to see.

Great job at trashing your own school in public when you could have done something more to benefit everyone.

  • damn out of pt comment but..

wah firdaus' ears look damn big.

    hahahaha

  • eh thanks ah. haha.

    -firdaus

  • just trying to ease the tension man.

eh btw thanks for the help with the drums that starry starry night!

  • sure, bro. haha.

  • and come on! when are you all ever going to grow up?!!!! UNIVERSITY IS NOT ABOUT As!!!! It is about learning and developing life skills that prepare you in entering into the real world! If all what you think of uni life is just As... then you are really a BIG FOOL and your life is really damn miserable.... I pity you all.

  • please type english as this doesn't make a bit of sense. I am an SMU grad and your lack of any sort of language structure with the text messaging lingo has made me nauseues. Please have respect for the institution that your parents just posted about $200K for. Also, welcome to the real world.

  • 40 hours a week in the library?? Can't you see you're an integral part of the problem? The problem of digging each other into the rat hole...

There are only so many As to go around. This is not your RJC/HCJC days, where >50% of the school can get 4As...and now you realise being in a top JC doesn't make you more intelligent and better by default...

  • Its really all abt choices.U can choose to spend 40 hours in the library or get involve in fun-filled activities that is available in school.Every university has its good & bad pts.Focus on the good pts and make it better. Instead, of slamming your own sch, why not make a difference and influence - Make SMU as you had expected it to be!Stop harping on it k.Cheer up :)

  • i think this is a poor reflection of SMU. In every situation, you have to adapt. Before you go to a school, you would have to know the culture of SMU. i prepared myself by knowing that it's competitive and different from my original culture. On top of that, competition comes within yourself. You wanna score, that's why you compete. This video is super biased.

  • It's great that you are fitting well into SMU and that you do not feel cheated. I am glad that you have an open mind. As you are entitled to your own point view here, I hope you will learn to respect other people's point of view.

I believe despite the "skewed" perspective you feel, this video has served its purpose. Not everyone may agree with the message but I am sure the message has resonated within everyone's heart.

  • keeto, your comments about the club are uncalled for. This not a low quality production. People who have little or no media backgroud have slogged their asses off to make this club as it is. If you had more depth in the first place, you won't be making shallow comments in the first place.

  • waaaaa

    such an advertisement

    HAHAHAH

    anyway..i'm freshie

hmmmm quite surprised how I spend my time at library, and sometimes feel very lonely coz I agree very much with Ahmad, SMU make us more as separate individuals. But actually if you want to see from other point, the opportunuties and activites given are huge and fun

  • woah. that's a bit strong, don't you think? they did have a disclaimer - to each his own. :) the internet is our free little world.

  • yea well it's my personal opinion too. Might have sound a tad too agressive but i'm tired of people stirring up such nonsense when there's none. And this isn't the only low quality video campus tv has produced. check out the past ones.

  • 4 words, freshies - work hard, play harder.

  • What is the objective of this video?

It's rather skewed towards the grievances of freshies who are still getting used to their new university life.Talking about the old campus may not help them, except understanding about the university's earlier times.

Although the 'environment' helps, very often, it's really up to you whether you want to be identified as part of an organisation.

  • Hi, to be fair, year 4s and alummni are telling me how much they loved their SMU life and what a difference it made to them. They truly believe in SMU.

I agree that the freshmen are getting used to new uni life, their attitudes change almost every week. But in the 3 years in the city campus, the culture has not gotten 'better', rather, i think its obviously 'worse' in year 1 now.

  • hi! nice video there and i thought it portrayed how i feel as a SMU freshie...

  • Joshua! Well done vid, but i cant help but say this is such a bad advertisement for SMU! But it's sad cos it really is an accurate description of life at the uni. I guess you could minimize the tag words linked to the video so the whole world doesn't see it! Or is that the intention? Hehe. Well done anyway mate. Great for a maiden production.

  • First the good news - good production values. Truth is however, I'm rather disappointed.I know I'm gonna get flak for this, but I cannot help but feel that this episode doesn't really address the topic. It comes across more of "How SMU has not lived up to my expectations" rather than looking at how the culture has changed/worsened over the past 7 years. This episode certainly requires a continuation in my opinion.

  • Hi Zalliezal,

how do you think it should be continued?

    Josh

  • Hi Josh,

I guess try to define what's meant by "culture" first. Talk to profs, they are the ones who are in the best position to see if the student profile has changed over the years. I guess more in-depth interviews with both seniors/alumni and freshies. Right now it honestly appears too skewed towards the latter.

Back then, we had a lot of different characters/personalities. People voiced out their opinions, challenged ideas. How has it changed ever since?

  • as i shot it, i found the seniors felt the same way as the freshmen.

I agree that there should be more coverage of the alummni and year 4s. For now, consider the difference in the way the years 1-3 talk on the documentary and the way Firdaus (year 4) and the alumni address the issue and carry themselves.

However, this video will have worked if people watch it and talk about it.

  • great job! emotional and sincere... the range of responses was a nice touch too... i can definitely remember being a freshmen in the new campus (2 years ago)... but enough of youtube! back to work! target? 40 hours in the school library!
