"Batman" was indeed campy, but this was mixed w/ clever/deadpan humor--almost satire. The show was very smart to target 2 audiences: 1. Middle class families could enjoy the 'socko' fights and 2. the jet set could howl at the under the radar jokes ie "Miss Iceland" Why else do you suppose the series lasted so long? And why else do you suppose so many movie stars begged to be villains?! They loved the clever lines!! Fab costumes helped as well!! "Batman" is with the best of 60's chic.

This is the great director, Otto Preminger (ANATOMY OF A MURDER) starring as Mr. Freeze, and having a great time. Although George Sanders (ALL ABOUT EVE) was less overtly sinister, the guy radiated danger. I used to love how each section of a room would get warmer or colder with a click of his device as he walked. Great stuff

But I also loved how all villians had to ( by contract it seems)  figure out the slowest and most inconvenient death possiblefor the hero and then leave the scene. I never liked the Mr. Freeze episodes, because they always tried to make you feel sorry for him. But if he was supposed to be so sad, then why did he laugh just like all the other villains? To be fair, I had this same problem with Schwarzenegger in the movie.

Miss Iceland shouldn't have been able to change her facial expression if she were frozen, though. And her accent should have been Scandinavian/Celtic.

I beg to differ. George Sanders was the first and best Mr. Freeze. He gave the character some sympathy and humanity, in spite of being an evil genius. And he didn't overplay it, except for a slightly campy German accent. Eli Wallach was just bland, and Otto Preminger chewed up the scenery.
